Un-Plug at the Great Escape on Lake Superior

Bedrooms 2
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

Tired of computers, e-mail, 24 hour news and over-scheduling? Ready to un-plug? We invite you to unwind at the Great Escape in Grand Marias, Michigan. This nicely renovated cottage, located on beautiful Lake Superior, will provide the ultimate retreat from your busy life. It is an ideal vacation spot for families with children or couples who enjoy peace and quiet and exploring the great outdoors.

With over 100 feet of private frontage, the white sandy beach with views of Pictured Rocks' Grand Sable Dunes is one of the cottage's greatest features. The cottage is situated on a deep lot on Coast Guard Point, but the approximate 125 yard walk to the beach on the dune path is well worth it! Whether you enjoy curling up with a good book, building elaborate sand castles, combing the beach for agates, flying kites, fishing off the break wall, swimming in crystal clear fresh water, paddle boarding or just soaking up the sun, this quiet, secluded beach offers it all.

What could be better than ending your day making s'mores by a campfire on the beach, while watching an incredible sunset? Perhaps being the first one up and enjoying your coffee on the beach, pondering the wonders of life! We have no doubt you will leave Grand Marais refreshed, energized and ready to tackle what lies ahead, until your next Great Escape.

Accommodations include 2 bedrooms, large sleeping loft with 2 twin beds and 1 bathroom; full kitchen with 20 inch electric range and full sized refrigerator and large farm table that easily seats eight; living and family room with rustic wooden furniture, a gas stove fireplace and Tivoli radio with iPOD nano connection. Cottage has tongue and groove pine paneling with a cathedral ceiling in the main living area. There is a large front deck with 4 Adirondack chairs. Driveway allows parking for several vehicles. External electrical outlet is available for an RV.

Everything perfect at the Great Escape!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second summer staying at the Great Escape and this year was just as perfect as last year. Nikki makes all the details a breeze, responds almost immediately every time. Even called us this year when the power went out for the whole town (was on again within an hour).

It's a relaxing feeling just to drive up to the cottage and know we'll be settling in to our time there. Everything is spectacularly clean, and comfortably arranged. The beds and linens are very comfortable, and we appreciated the variety of pillows, too. Loft is perfect for my daughter, and my mom and I each had a comfy bedroom. The cottage gets a great cross-breeze even with just the doors open and screen doors latched, we were always very comfortable. Ceiling fan makes even the warmest days comfortable in the loft.

The kitchen has everything we need and more. Bathroom also super clean, with great fluffy towels, and we love the shower.

The big dining room table was filled throughout our visit with puzzles, card games, art projects with beach stones, and of course great meals. Plenty for my daughter to enjoy, especially with the many hours we spend beachcombing.

It's a short drive to Pictured Rocks, and not too long down to Seney NWR. If you can drag yourself away from this cozy cottage, get the whitefish at the Dunes Saloon, cinnamon rolls and blueberry lemon doughnuts at the Breakwall Bakery, and make sure to stop at the Pickle Barrel and the Gitchee Gumee Museum to learn more about your beachcombing agates and other stones.

No complaints about anything - we had a superior time! (Sorry for the bad pun). Can't wait to go back next year!

Awesome Honeymoon at the Great Escape!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Grand Marais and we stayed at the Great Escape. We absolutely loved everything about it! We loved the location, the cozy atmosphere of the place, and the cleanliness of the cottage when we arrived. Sure, it was pretty chilly during the time we were there (it actually snowed our last full day there!), but we still had a great time looking for Agates on the beach and sitting by the little fireplace, sipping tea and coffee. We definitely plan on returning to the Great Escape (maybe when the weather is a little bit warmer), it is definitely a gem in the beautiful U.P.!

Great Escape for families -

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 really enjoyed our week at the Great Escape this summer. The loft was perfect for the older kids (9 and 5), while it was such a unusual joy to have a bedroom entirely devoted to letting the baby (2) take her naps and get a good night sleep. The kitchen was perfect for making things easy to live simply and stocked with all the basics that we needed. The location was great - a little longer of a hike to the water for our 2 year old than we expected, but really great to have Lake S. in our "backyard". Most days there was a great breeze off the water which kept things cool indoors. Overall the place really has an "home-like" feel that makes it very welcoming and enjoyable. It's a very peaceful beach - we were never troubled by too many people, and an easy distance for day trips to the T. Falls or the Pictured Rocks. The owners have been kind enough to leave lots of material of local sights to see, which makes planning a trip easy, and my kids really enjoyed the simple things like spending lots of time at the beach, visiting the Lightkeeper's Museum (a short walk down the road), or hiking to waterfalls. The town is pleasant - you can find everything you really need at the Baywater Market or the Superior Shores store in way of food supplies - although if you are passing through a bigger town on the way you may want to stop for most of your things there. The bathroom was recently re-done, and although is has a small footprint it is very nicely laid out and well done. I hope that our family will have the joy of returning to the area in a few years - and if so, I'd definately rent this home again.

Too Short a Stay!

  • 5 of 5

For our first visit to Grand Marais, my mother and I stayed at Great Escape for two nights that were open between other guests' longer stays. Public utilities work started on the road to the cabin shortly before we arrived, but despite the beeping from large trucks moving dirt and setting lines during the days, the cabin still managed to be comfortable and relaxing. It's obvious that the cabin's owners love it and have taken great care in opening the cabin to renters. We felt welcomed from the moment we opened the front door, and the cabin had everything we needed. Nikki, the rental agent, was very responsive and easy to work with; she definitely went the extra mile to be helpful!

Grand Marais is a great little town surrounded by natural beauty. The walk from the cabin through the sand to the lake was a little longer than expected but well worth it--what a gorgeous beach, lined with pebbles, graced with endangered nesting piping plovers, and ideal for watching the sun go down. The colors and clarity of the water are amazing. We can't wait to go back and spend more time in Grand Marais at the Great Escape!

Great Escape!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at the Great Escape, and had a wonderful time. The house is very close to a lot of great hiking spots, just a walk away from town, and had a spectacular view of Lake Superior. Everything we needed was provided for us in the house. Hopefully we will be able to return to this great location next year!
