About this property

Historic Log Cabin - Farm - Near RRG and Lex. Winter retreat rates available

Writers, artists and people needing a get-away...cozy up in your PJs, winter hike, have outside winter bonfires. Birding, star gazing and learning opportunities on one of the largest organic farms in central Kentucky. The historic cabin and ell have been totally renovated, with central heat, a modern kitchen, modern bathrooms, and solar panels.

Centrally Located in the country, but located within easy drives to Red River Gorge, Lexington, Berea and the new music attraction in Sharpsburg KY.

The space
Our historic cabin is an official Kentucky Landmark and winner of several preservation awards. Located at Mt. Folly, which Laura’s family has owned and operated since the 1820’s, Mt. Folly is one of the largest working organic farms in the state. After 40 years of cherishing her unique country lifestyle, Laura wants to share a piece with you.

The log house sits on more than 1000 acres of Kentucky’s rolling pastures, 45 minutes east of Lexington, near Red River Gorge, Natural Bridge, and the small town of Winchester. Even with these nearby attractions, the cabin has a history and allure of its own, and there may be no reason to leave.

The land on which the cabin was built was patented in 1784 to James Garrard Sr., Kentucky’s second governor. Exactly when the cabin was built is lost to history, but it was common for settlers to build a “pen”, or room, in this case 16 by 18 feet, to stake their claim. (We have plans to do date the building using dendrochronology, but haven’t done it yet.)

We can make a good case that at least one room of the cabin dates from the 1780’s or 1790’s. The back “ell” probably was built around 1850. We’ve gutted it and completely remodeled it, for a modern kitchen and pantry.

The property has two cabin bedrooms, one a master, and one a “bunk” room with a fine double bed and twin. The entire cabin has central heat and air, and the living room has a new, comfortable queen-sized pull- out couch. There is a dining room featuring a Tomlinson Table, the design invented and patented by Laura’s great grandfather. The Library contains books, and printer, a library table, and a pull out single sized couch. For dining, guests have a selection of china, from Hadley Pottery to Laura’s family heirlooms. The kitchen is well equipped, and a limited array of local and organic food is available for additional charge on the honor system.

The property has two full baths, a laundry and mud room, and a three-season porch overlooking goat hollow.

Laura is a big reader, the cabin has an eclectic selection of books. There is a Internet, TV, with netflix and local channels.

Guests have free run of the property, and can walk, run or in dry weather drive down the farm road, which is 3 miles long. The farm road makes for a splendid morning run or walk, and we have two mountain bikes available for guests at no charge.

The farm’s mistress, Laura, in 1985 founded a beef company that raised cattle with no antibiotics or growth hormones. Since then, she has continued on the path of better food and sustainable agriculture, her farm raising organic and non-gmo crops and heritage grains. She likes to greet all her guests, and wants to be clear that this is a working farm, supporting 5 families, not a hobby farm. The farm is part of a local economy, and works to sequester carbon in soils and trees

The west section of the farm was part of Daniel Boone’s settlement and preemption, and in 1863 an African American community was started on a piece of land contiguous with the farm, the land purchased by Moses Robinson, a “free man of color.” The cemetery remains, and Laura and others are working on preserving the history. This is open for guests to hike.

The cabin consists of 2 bedrooms, 2 full baths, a family room with fold-out couch, Library with single fold out couch, kitchen, pantry, dining room, mud room and three-season porch. The cabin is furnished with antique pieces that match the history of the cabin. It has a new air conditioning and heating system, both electric. Solar panels installed on the roof feed into the grid and offset electricity used.
Bedroom 1:
Located on the second floor, the main bedroom is furnished with a king bed.
Bedroom 2:

Guest access

Guests have free run of the property, the farm road makes for a splendid morning run or walk; two mountain bikes are available for guests at no charge.

Interaction with guests

We will be around as much or as little as you desire. Laura or a member of farm staff insist on greeting guests. We live a small hike across the property and we enjoy showing people around, sharing the history of our farm and our day-to-day operations. We might be using the grain mill or taking care of the goats and bottle calves that live in fields near the cabin. Guests can pick fresh vegetables from the farm garden, and feed the hens...and have some fresh farm eggs!

Other things to note
PET POLICY: We allow housebroken dogs that are under 25lbs.

Guests have a private farm store behind the cabin operated on the honor system.

CLEANING DISCLAIMER: a party of more than 5 people will be charged an additional $20 for cleaning which can be paid with cash or check on the honor system.

We do not allow parties at the cabin.

This was truly a great place to stay. Getting back to nature was awesome. We didn’t get explore as much as we wanted, but the cabin was nice and roomy with updated plumbing. I enjoyed looking through the little store behind the cabin. I wished we would have had more time to check out the whole place. And the beds were so comfortable! It was very pleasant stay!

Picturesque Getaway!
Laura and her entire farm (animals and people) were so welcoming! We loved hearing first hand about the history of the cabin and area. It makes you feel like you are stepping back in time. It was very hot the week we visited but the AC kept the cabin comfortable. The 2 bathrooms were updated and very clean as was the kitchen. It is an old cabin so as expected we had some cobwebs and insects but nothing crazy and we felt very comfortable in the space. We would definitely stay here again with our family of 5!!

Wedding near Mt. Sterling
It was wonderful. The renovations to the old log cabin were amazing, leaving the cabin mostly as it was with the comforts of today.Laura was kind enough to give a tour/history lesson for us and it was most interesting. It was the perfect place to visit and cook meals or go outside to see the goats or to stroll down the road to pick blackberries and see the cattle and birds. The whole farm was unique and far enough away from the town that we felt totally alone, but close enough to go into town for things. We also hiked and kayaked in Red River Gorge nearby. We are thinking about when we can return.

Laura was a great host... very responsive and helpful. House and farm were just perfect for our family... Especially enjoyed that there was no light pollution so the stars were fully visible. Hiked Natural Bridge and Pilot Knob and toured the Ark Encounter. Kudos to Laura for all she is doing for the community. Look up Mt. Folly Farm!

all of our needs were met in a bucolic setting
Our stay was perfect for my family of four. Laura was easy to communicate with and extra accommodating. There was so much room and the kitchen was perfect for making big family dinners. Each of us got our own room to sleep which felt super luxurious. The property is fifteen minutes from a grocery store and also close to great hiking at Red River Gorge. The goats (right behind the cabin) amused us more than I expected. My favorite part of the stay was walking out on the farm road. I would love to come back when the weather's warmer. I highly recommend staying here.

On farm, beautifully updated log home
Beautiful location overlooking pastures holding cows and goats. Entrance is behind a secure locked gate. The log home is beautiful - modem appliances and excellent heat/air. Laura has provided loads of books and maps on local history and sites to see. Great hiking nearby to pilot knob, red river gorge, Daniel Boone national park. And laura is a gem - a joy to work with.

Short Stay
Fantastic historical log home & farm property. Had fun photographing the goats & duck. Rainy weather prevented exploring property more w/either bikes or golf carts. Hope to visit again in sunny weather to further explore the farm. Had a great time exploring Winchester, Lexington, & the surrounding area. Enjoyed a wonderful meal at Wildcat Willie's Distillery Restaurant. No mistake that the delicious food was Mt. Folly fresh farm products from the beef to the tomato on the burger! Everyone in the area was so friendly & helpful. With departure day being sunny this history-loving family was able to explore Fort Boonesboroughs. We have already developed a "to do & see wish list" for our next trip to Ky.

Wonderful visit to Mt Folly Farm
Had a quiet, relaxing stay in a historic cabin on Mt Folly farm near Winchester, KY. Centrally located near scenic hiking trails as well as the horse farms and distilleries unique to Kentucky. Laura was a gracious host who took the time to give us the history of the property as well as her passion for the farm and related interests (don't miss the farm to table restaurant and distillery in Winchester!). We loved the working farm setting, the beautiful sunsets and the nightly fire pit happy hours. Hoping another stay is in our future!

I wish we could have stayed longer
What a wonderful home! Laura’s hospitality made us feel so welcomed. She came over when we arrived to show us around and tell us about her beautiful farm and home. There was a dozen of farm fresh eggs in the refrigerator and the “crooked house” store behind the house had chickens, steak, and more eggs for purchase when we needed them. There was plenty of room for our 3 teenagers and us. It rained everyday we were there but in between the rain showers, we were able to explore the farm and see all the animals. We had some of the farms delicious steaks one night and ate at their restaurant, Wildcat Willy’s another night. The food at the restaurant was amazing! The history of the farm and all that Laura is doing for the local economy is amazing! We will definitely be back and will stay longer next time.

The perfect spot for our little group.
This property was beyond our best expectations. A historic cabin on a lovely functioning organic farm for 3 organic-minded gals. We made it our hub for 6 days of visiting the red river gorge area and were so happy to return there each night. The beds were super comfy, breakfast every morning on a bright sun porch, a rich and fascinating family history, a picturesque and peaceful setting and everything we needed for our stay. As a bonus, Laura was a wealth of information with personality-plus! . We gave this property 5 stars and would definitely stay there again and again.
