4BR/1BA Sleeps 8 (2 Double Beds/2 Bunk Beds); incredible location
Annisquam/Bay View, northwestern Cape Ann
A winding, narrow, privet-lined road will take you into the heart of the family compound, past the lily pond, and to a sandy causeway that separates two private beaches. Look to your right: beach chairs and towels, a baby napping under a big umbrella, teenagers diving off the moored dock. To your left: skim boarders, a dancing kite, a game of frisbee. Or maybe no one at all.
Out beyond Sandy Beach, to the north, lies the long pier that Benjamin Butler and his partner built in the late 1800s to ship quarried granite by sea. To the southwest, now set up as a picnic table, you’ll discover the 8’ circular stone that once moored Butler’s yacht America in Diamond Cove. You may remember that Butler served as a Civil War general, before he became governor of Massachusetts in 1883. His descendants cherish Bay View.
Now continue across the sandy causeway, onto the first of the two islands on the estate. Turn right, and you’ve arrived at Punnet, and to a simpler time. Built in 1960 by Adelbert and Judith Ames as a summer retreat for their active family, this unassuming cottage holds many happy memories. There’s plenty of room for yours.
Here, conversation, books, board games, gathering around the fire pit or the dinner table, and watching glorious sunsets all take the place of television and Internet. Plans are made: a game of tennis, exploring the outer island, taking the two kayaks to Annisquam Harbor, beach combing, snorkeling or diving, going on a chartered fishing boat in search of stripers, bluefish or tuna, or on a whale watch.
People who want to explore sandy public beaches leave for Good Harbor, Cranes’s Beach, or countless others. The birders head to Plum Island. Others go to watch the huge waves crash on the ledges at Halibut Point, especially when the weather turns stormy. Rainy day plans also include exploring the old port city of Gloucester, historic Salem, and other coastal towns. Museums, restaurants, antique shops, and galleries abound.
However, guests soon learn that gravity is strong on the roofed front porch of the cottage. Ambitions dissolve, and relaxation takes over in the views of Ipswich Bay, Crane’s Beach, Plum Island, the New Hampshire coast, and Mt. Agamenticus, in Maine. Birds sing in the sheltering trees all day long. Stripers and bluefish chase small fish on the surface, out in Ipswich Bay, and sailboats, fishing boats and lobstermen pass by. We’ve seen huge schools of porpoises. Bring your binoculars.
The cottage sleeps up to eight, in two double beds and two bunk beds. There is one bathroom, but two showers — the outside shower has hot water, and a great view. The kitchen is serviceable, and outfitted with dishes and cooking tools. Bring your own selection of groceries.
Sheets and towels are provided, as is a washing machine and dryer. To keep rates low, we ask that guests leave the house as they found it: RE-MAKE BEDS WITH CLEAN SHEETS, WASH TOWELS, CLEAN BATHROOM, VACUUM/SWEEP FLOORS – LEAVE HOUSE TIDY
Family rules preclude large gatherings, dogs on the beach during the day, and noisy parties. You’ll find a complete listing of the “rules of the road” in the cottage.
You will be a guest in a close-knit, private community. We share the beaches with cousins and their guests. Strike up a conversation, if you’d like. People are friendly here, and interesting. You’re sure to feel welcome, and right at home.

About Mark Ames
My great-great grandfather purchased this property in 1865 and built a grand granite house with porches overlooking Ipswich Bay. In 1960 my father and mother built our little beach house overlooking the mouth of the harbor. I grew up spending summers playing in, on and by the ocean with a large pack of cousins who also have houses on the Ames Estate.

Situated right on the water
This is a delightful cottage situated right on the waterfront and convenient location to both Rockport and Gloucester. The stage comes with two kayaks and were utilized during our stay. We also fished right off the rock outcroppings for stripers.
Our evenings were spent outside by the fire pit gazing up at the stars and the ocean. Beautiful sunsets can be seen from the property.
I would definitely recommend staying here and will return next year.
The owner is super nice and welcoming. Cabin is right on the water with a few available beaches and fishing right off the rocks. Beautiful deck and fire pit in yard. Amazing property to explore.
We LOVE the cottage. I can't imagine a better location! There is a magnificent view of the ocean right in the front. The sunset and sunrise are breathtaking. The yard is well kept and has a lot of picnic shades. The porch is a great spot for breakfast and dinner. We counted stars and had colorful conversations around the fire pit after dinner. With few minutes walk, we gained accesses to 2 beaches. The kitchen has all the necessities to make good meals. The sleeping rooms are basic and comfortable. The living room has a fire place to keep warm on cold nights. There is no TV or Internet to distract us. We played cardboard games, read books and have conversations. Linens and towels are provided. There are also washer and dryer. We had a wonderful family vacation here and would recommend it.
my wife and two children and daughters friend stayed a week in this perfectly appointed cottage . the property and the two beaches here were perfect we hardly left the property only to eat at some of the yummy seafood ,fished every day found sand dollars and shells . it was surreal we would recommend this cottage to anybody . the Owners were very helpful and extremely nice folk looking forward to returning
The Way It Used To Be
The prior two reviews are accurate. I would add that this is a classic simple summer house, very private (except for the occasional member of the owner's extended family coming by to jump off the rocks at high tide), clean and comfortable. The owner is friendly and very knowledgeable about the area. Although other family members were more active (including kayaking and swimming) on our recent stay, I must admit that I spent hours on the front porch either reading or just staring at the water and listening to the water, cleansing my mind, relaxing and recharging. Many pleasant picnic dinners on front lawn.
Perfect family getaway, lots of privacy, wonderful views, great swimming, quiet & peaceful. Great for adventuring shells, & sea glass. Kids enjoyed climbing rocks, kyaking, & even jumping off the rocks at high tide into the clean crisp water! Best part of this vacation was no t.v. no internet & most of all no Ice Cream Trucks!!!! Looking forward to doing this again next year!
House is on the 'north shore' of Massachusetts [in Gloucester's 'Bay View', and overlooks mouth of a small cove facing the NW so there are VIEWS of SUNSETS ACROSS the WATER and views of MA, NH & Maine coastline
