Take advantage of all that nature has to offer by exploring our 130 acres of mountain forests, pastures, gardens, ponds, and historic structures. Watch the fireflies light up the starlit sky as you relax on the porch or on the magnificent covered dock. Hike our mountain trails. Swim, canoe, or fish in our fully stocked, 3 acre pond. Or roast marshmallows around the campfire and listen to nature's brilliant nighttime chorus!
Experience the amazing beauty of the surrounding countryside by visiting Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive, and 'Old Rag' Mountain only minutes away. Bike some of the most scenic country roads in the Mid-Atlantic region, visit award winning wineries, marvel at the Blue Ridge by horseback, and take home treasures from the many local art galleries and antique stores. If that isn't enough, expand your abilities with yoga lessons, art classes, and drumming circles. And, if relaxation is your primary goal, we will help you to arrange a massage, beauty treatment, or catering on the premises!
Enjoy the wide range of local dining options, from country bakeries, quaint diners, and gourmet eateries featuring local produce and meat, to world class dining at the Inn at Little Washington only 10 minutes away. If you'd rather prepare your own meals, you can do it in your modern, fully equipped kitchen featuring granite countertops and new cabinetry and stainless steel appliances. Dining options on the farm range from picnics in the woods to romantic, candle lit meals on the dock or screened porch with views of the pond and the Blue Ridge.
In addition to a modern kitchen, our 1860's farmhouse features high speed Internet and new baths with whirlpool tub, pedestal sink, washer/dryer, and tiled floors and shower. Stone fireplaces and a wood stove add ambiance and warm you in winter, and ceiling fans in every room make the central air conditioning necessary only in the hottest days of summer. Lovely 19th Century wood floors grace the house throughout and historic, winding wood staircases lead to cozy but roomy bedrooms upstairs. Please note: The staircases are rather narrow and steep, and are unsuitable for individuals with mobility issues or who need bedroom and bath all on one level.
The Farmhouse has 2 full suites, each with large eat-in kitchen, living area, screened porch, one large bedroom, and bath. The Pond View suite has a queen and twin bed, whirlpool tub and shower, and fireplaces up and downstairs, whereas the Mountain View side has a queen and double bed, large tiled shower, and wood stove downstairs.
The Farmhouse is perfect for a family and for sharing with friends. An adjoining door between the two living areas may be left open or closed for privacy. One Farmhouse suite or our new Barn Loft are ideal for a couple. We rent one Farmhouse suite for $265/nt. only when the Barn Loft ($285/nt.) is unavailable.
Our new, 2 bedroom upscale Barn Loft (VRBO #457779) has spectacular views of the Blue Ridge from every room. Entirely modern with glass front wood stove, slate and wood flooring, soapstone counters, and stainless appliances, this is a most special addition to our farm about an eighth of a mile from the farmhouse.
Finally, if you would like to fully experience rural life, you are welcome to help us with the many projects that farm living offers, from gardening and caring for the animals to projects around our restored 1860s log barn. We will make every effort to customize your stay so that your experience is memorable! Friendly, well mannered pets that will not harm our farm animals are welcome. We are a non-smoking property.

Originally from Texas (Andrea) and California (Steve), we consider ourselves 'refugees' from the Washington, DC suburbs, where we lived and worked for 18 years. We first visited Rappahannock County in 2002 for a retreat, and immediately fell in love with the Blue Ridge and all the area has to offer. After several years of looking at real estate, we bought the historic 130 acre county 'Poor Farm' in 2004 and began an extensive remodeling of the old farm house and barn. We also added ponds, roads, a dock, fencing, an orchard, extensive flower and vegetable gardens, and animals (2 mules, 2 horses, 7 goats, 25 chickens, 3 ducks, 3 guinea hens, 2 dogs, 5 barn cats, with more planned!). In 2010, we moved to our new home on the farm--a Virginia farmhouse with a big wrap around porch. And in 2012, we restored the old chicken coop and added chickens to our little menagerie. We also completed work on a new barn that includes a new 'Barn Loft' to accommodate additional visitors. Our farm is our little slice of heaven, and we feel blessed to share it with those who stay with us!
Andrea Wooten and Steve Ray purchased this farmhouse in 2004
The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia are one of the most beautiful places on earth to us! And Rappahannock County embodies values that we hold dear: close friends, strong sense of community, amazing commitment to conservation and stewardship of the earth, and a rural lifestyle that allows us stay in touch with ourselves and live our priorities. The area also has a vibrant arts community, world class hiking, excellent restaurants and inns, including the Inn at Little Washington, interesting shops and antique stores, and holistic medicine options. It is also close to Washington, DC and Charlottesville, Virginia, and a little over an hour to both Dulles and Washington Reagan airports. We could not think of a more ideal place to live and work!
Our property is secluded, at the end of a lovely country lane only 5 minutes from the little town of Sperryville. It is a place where the star lit sky sparkles so clearly at night that you almost lose your breath in awe...where lush flower and vegetable gardens and views of the Blue Ridge feed our soul...where fish jump in the pond and the birds and frogs compete in a chorus...where the only sounds are those of nature. Our cozy, completely remodeled farmhouse provides an ideal place to relax and unwind, and our 130 acres of forest, pastures, and ponds provide endless hiking, swimming, canoeing, fishing, biking, and exploration opportunities. Our friendly farm animals will love and entertain you. If you are looking for a place to relax, unwind, and get away from it all, this is just the place!
Thank you for your warm hospitality. The kids had a great experience with the chickens and Madeline! We loved to be able to feed all the creatures and to spend time near your peaceful lake. Blessings to you!
If you're looking a peaceful getaway in the country this is the place. Andrea, Steve, and the animals are excellent hosts! My family can't wait to go back again.
We stayed in the farmhouse for two nights during school spring break. Beautiful farm and perfect weather, kids had so much fun here! Collecting eggs, fishing, paddle boating, roasting marshmallows around the fire pit, they were never bored. Our puppy had her first swim in the pond, Molly is a great swimming coach!! Kids are asking to go back again and stay longer next time.
We stayed on Steve & Andrea's property from a Monday-Wednesday in April 2017. The weather was perfect, the accommodations outstanding, the experience for our family (we have 3 boys elementary/middle school aged) priceless. We went to Luray Caverns the first day, hiked Old Rag second day. The rest of our time was spent on the farm - we used paddle boat, spent a LOT of time playing with/feeding the chicks, following the ducks, feeding the goats, playing with the cats & hanging out with Molly, Steve and Andrea's dog. The lodging was plenty spacious for the 5 of us, the beds were comfortable. We all agreed we had the best sleep any of us have had in a long time when we stayed on the farm. Surprisingly, the little Exel gas station near the property had great little breakfast and lunch sandwiches. We never met Andrea b/c she was away on business while we were there, but Steve made sure we had everything we needed, answered our questions but at the same time gave us freedom and space to not feel like we were being watched or anything remotely like that. Just overall very worthwhile, so happy we did it, highly recommend. THANKS AGAIN - we had a BLAST!!!!
5 star experience. We wanted to disconnect from the fast pace life we live and truly relax. We were able to hike, canoe, feed the animals and build some great fires. My kids were able to run around and just be kids. The farm house that we rented was clean and very well cared for. All of the kitchen supplies and bath supplies were available for us to use. We brought our own food but did go to the small town one day for lunch which was cozy and wonderful.
Andrea (the owner of the farm) was very helpful and continually checked on us and made sure we had everything we needed. We can not wait to return to Cardinal Springs.
Our family spent Thanksgiving at the farm. We enjoyed the animals, the hiking, and the surrounding area. the owners were friendly and helpful and often around. We collected eggs from the chickens and feathers from the guineas. Lots of fun. The lake was perfect for a peaceful paddle but the fish were not biting. The farmhouse itself was cozy. The kitchen was well-appointed. We had some difficulty with smoke inside from the fireplace. The internet was a bit spotty which caused some grief watching the Redskins game. The house is split evenly down the middle into two apartments. The walls are thin and anytime someone was on the stairs in one apt, the footsteps were very loud in the adjacent apt. No big deal as long as it isn't someone you don't know disrupting your slumber. I would not want to rent one side and have strangers in the other side. Way too close for comfort, but fine for a small family.
Loved our stay at the farmhouse. The kids loved the animals that are on the farm, the cats, ducks, goats and chickens. We enjoyed the paddleboat and canoe on the pond. The listing was accurate and the owners very helpful and friendly. Shenandoah National Park is very close by. The grounds are gorgeous.
Yoga and other exercise classes are available 5 minutes from the farm and on site by request. Massage therapists will come to the house. The Inn at Little Washington is 10 minutes away, Old Rag 25 minutes.
