El nombre original de Playa del Carmen era Xaman Há, que significa Agua del Norte. Se cuenta fueron pioneros dos familias quienes formaron su hogar en esta zona.

En 1526 la región fue conquistada por Francisco Montejo fundando la villa de Salamanca donde actualmente se encuentra Xel-Ha. En la época colonial no hubieron muchos avances en la región sino hasta el siglo XX cuando se comenzaron a fundar campamentos para la explotación del chicle y madera.
