About the property

Panoramic ocean view, studio cottage, 1 queen bed, full kitchen, BBQ, 1 bath

The view of the ocean and coastal pasture makes guests exclaim "wow" as they enter the dutch doors of this cozy cottage.

This is a place to relax. You can watch the whales play and hear them sing at night. The cows lazily graze through the pasture below with the Big Island of Hawaii off in the distance. Sunrises and sunsets offer stunning colors across the sky. You can also appreciate the views from the comfort of your bed. We have stocked the cottage with all of the amenities you will need to make you feel right at home.

For the more adventurous, there are hikes, beaches, and waterfalls nearby. Haleakala National Park (7 Sacred Pools) is located 4 miles south of the cottage and Hamoa Beach is 3.5 miles north. A small fresh water pond is only 1/4 mile down the road.

Why Michelle Horen chose Hāna

Many of our guests return annually. They all say the photos don't do the place justice. Everyone declares the view spectacular. There are 70 acres of government preserve between the cottage and the shore. Even so, when the whales are here (Dec/Apr), you can hear them splash and see them jump. Cattle and a few horses abound in the preserve you can watch their calves frolic. A thoroughly restful place. The serene views and private nature of the cottage offer a sanctuary of kinds for guests.

What makes this studio unique

Koali Ranch Cottage started out as a vacant lot set aside for a school house. In 1955, the Territory of Hawaii decided that it did not need a school there and auctioned it. My parents were successful bidders. The Territory insisted that the house be erected within a year. The cottage was designed by local architect John Tatum working with island famous Val Ossipoff.

A True Gem in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is a true gem. We love the Hana area and coastline. While Hana has gained popularity and visits in past years, this cottage offers beautiful retreat from the crowds. Hana still feels remote here. Inside open plan and back deck spaces give wonderful feel of connection to the pasture, bluffs and ocean overlook. We stayed here six years ago, and returned 2018. Hope it will not be six years for our next Maui trip; will certainly return to Koali Ranch Cottage. Managers Michelle and Wendy are extremely helpful. Also was a pleasure to meet the owner Chuck Gray.

Owner's Response: Indeed! A special review; thank you. We try hard to keep you happy and the weather has not been helpful. We agree and hope that it won't be another six years before you are able to return to Hana.

A slice of paradise!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I celebrated our 25th Anniversary with a 10 day trip to Maui where we had honeymooned. We never had the chance to experience Hana during that visit so this trek was at the top of our list this time around. Needless to say, we loved exploring the east and southern part if the island. It is truly stunning. Staying at Koali Ranch was perfect. We were there for two nights which gave us enough time to see all the points of interest. The best part of staying there was the view. It was absolutely spectacular! It was also delightful to stay on a ranch with cows who visited daily. We got such a kick out of it when they come around mooing and munching on the grass. The peacefulness of this location was unsurpassed. We left the sliding doors opened at night and we could hear the distant waves crashing on the shore. The cottage was comfortable and well stocked. The kitchen & bathroom were very dated, but functional. The comfortable bed and the lanai made up for these features. We only had one issue and it was with a running toilet, but we were able to manage it. We totally recommend bringing in food from outside of Hana Town in a cooler or pre-made food from the food trucks along the way. We opted to cook our own dinner, but vegetables were very limited, let alone fresh ones. This was quite unexpected considering the lushness of the area. We hope to return to Koali Ranch again someday!

Paradise in Hana

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had an amazing time at the Koali Ranch Cottage! We arrive just at sunset on our first day there, walked in the cottage, slid open the back porch door and just stood in silence taking in the view while feeling the cooling ocean breezes.

The cottage is comfortable and well appointed, including very comfortable patio furniture that you will use a lot. You really don't need A/C with the great breeze you get through the cottage, and the showers were nice and warm.

The property manager Michelle was awesome to work with, and even arranged for us to stay at another one of her family's cottages down the street when we extended our stay in Hana.

Food and beaches are close by (10 mins), along with waterfalls and hikes (Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls through bamboo forest at the Kipahulu portion of Haleakala National Park).

An excellent place to stay to get away from it all with plenty of conveniences, and you couldn't ask for a more beautiful setting.

Peace & quiet away from everything.

  • 5 of 5

The little cottage on the clifftop was just what we were looking for in between our holiday in Waikiki and Kaanapali. We spent 3 nights in the cottage and just relaxed and enjoyed the serenity. We bought supplies on the way through Hana and then only went back into town once for lunch at the Ranch Restaurant. The rest of the time we sat on the deck and just watched the weather move through. Thank you so much for allowing us to share in your little piece of paradise.

This was a small cottage with a great ocean view. A little bit worn but clean and well furnished.

Owner's Response: Hi Donna, we are very glad you enjoyed your stay! The cottage itself if older and this is why we price it far under our neighboring rentals. We are in the process of remodeling and bringing it up to the standards that the incredible ocean view deserves! We hope you can come back again and see our renovations. Aloha!

Gliding, swim in mountain pools just a 5 minute walk away. 20 minutes away from the Haleakala National Park named for tourists as the Seven Sacred Pools. Most people nap on the lanai and wake up in time to spot the shining telescope dome

atop Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii. Then they enjoy the swirling colors as the sun sets. You don't see the sun go into the ocean, but if it rains you can often see rainbows over the ocean).
