Quant Maine Cottage and Beautiful Area on Mount Desert Isle
We loved our stay at Kelley's Cottage (for two). It was perfect for our Maine honeymoon. We loved the location just outside Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park since we did a lot of driving all around Mount Desert Isle, to Schoodic Peninsula and over to Bucksport and Belfast. The cottage was cute and comfortable. Mike and Sue were extremely friendly when I spoke with them when we first got to the Cottage. The property was beautiful with a nice view of the small pond across the road. It was great that the ocean was just down the road if you wanted to take a short walk to see it. As noted by others that stayed, there is noise from the road but we barely noticed it. We also loved that we could grill out at the Cottage and even cook our own fresh Maine lobster we brought from Hannaford's in Bar Harbor. We were so glad that we picked this Cottage over some of the tiny cabins that we saw at a few of the resorts just down the road, or in town where there were just way too many people for our liking. We would definitely stay here again and will be recommending to any friends/couples that consider vacationing near Bar Harbor.
Thank you for taking the time to write a thorough review. It's great to hear that guests experience all of the island and the surrounding towns. We're blessed to live in such a beautiful place and love sharing it.
It is close to rt 3 but the traffic sounds are minimal. The kitchen is well equipped ---were able to make our own lobsters and steamers. Very short distance to the entrance to Acadia also good location to go to Northeast and Southwest Harbors.
I'm glad that you mentioned cooking lobsters. While the unit is equipped to cook lobsters yourself, I should mention that there are three lobster pounds within a mile of the property where they will cook them for you to bring home. Even the Hannaford grocery store will cook lobsters for you.
Very comfortable accommodations
The Kelley's are gracious hosts to their lovely cottage. They thought of everything you might need for your stay. The cottage has a full kitchen with a gas grill on the spacious deck that over looks a pond. Short walk to get access to Frenchman Bay. Pet friendly. Highly recommend! !
Charming and well-kept
My wife and I booked this cottage 6 months in advance of our stay for our one year wedding anniversary. We were seeking accommodations that provided a kitchen with a range and oven so that we could eat in whenever we pleased. We were also seeking a place that was in close proximity to Bar Harbor and Cadillac Mountain, but which was sufficiently remote from the crowds. Kelley's cottage met our needs and exceeded our expectations. There was a raised deck off of the living area that faced south-southwest which received ample sunshine on the clear days. There was a grassy yard (not enclosed) bordered by an asphalt driveway, a garage with second floor apartment, and another asphalt driveway connected to the owners' (Kelley's) residence. The cottage had terrific airflow when all windows and doors were open, cooling us off during the breezy daytime and the calmer nighttime. It boasted terrific natural sunlight with 2 windows in the bedroom, a crescent window on the bedroom door, a window in the bathroom, a window in the living area, sliding glass door in the living area, and a full window on the screen door entering through the kitchen. Our 55 lb mixed breed dog enjoyed morning runs on old harbor road and sand hill road and the yard gave her a patch to relieve herself. Street noise was the only downside to this location being set back from route 3 about 200 feet, which is a the main thoroughfare into bar harbor and back onto the mainland from MDI. One of the perks is he vicinity to Salsbury Cove where you can trek the rocky shore when the tide is low. The shore is about a three minute walk from the driveway entrance to the cottage.
Mike and Sue were terrific hosts, providing wifi internet, directv with a TV in the living room, at least 6 bath towels, dish soap, paper towels, toilet paper, dish sponges, and washer and dryer on premises (no fee, available 24/7). My wife and I had a chance to meet them and chat a couple times throughout our stay. They are full of local knowledge and are very approachable having been long time residents of MDI.
The cottage is perfect for 2-3 people (if the third person can handle sleeping on the sofa or if you bring a sleeping pad or mattress to put in the living space) plus a large pet. Be prepared to spot some small insects and arachnids once a day. They're not a nuisance nor is it related to housekeeping, it is simply a consequence of being in the wilderness.
Thanks, Mike and Sue!
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this detailed review. It was a pleasure having you as our guests and guiding you toward the many beautiful parts of our island. We hope to see you again. - Sue and Mike -
Sue and Mike- thank you for your hospitality and adorable cottage. Very clean and everything we needed at our fingertips.
Cozy and clean
This cottage is conveniently located about 10 minutes outside of Bar Harbor. There are several lobster pounds within 5 minutes as well. I recommend Rose Eden Lobster only a mile or so away. You will not meet a nicer guy and his prices are as good as I saw for lobster dinners. The cottage is cozy, quiet and very clean. Mike and Sue are very friendly and easy to work with, the only reason I did not give them a 5 star rating is because the shower is very small and cramped. I read other reviews that talked about the road noise and although we heard some it was not awful. I will also say that the vast majority of housing is located as close or even closer to the main highway.
As the 2016 season comes to a close I want to thank all of our guests for their kind reviews and for treating our rental as if it was their own. We are so happy that you could be here to celebrate the 100th year of Acadia National Park and to enjoy our beautiful island. Until next time.
Sue and Mike Kelley
From the Parkadia Exxon station at the head of the island follow Rt 3 for 4 1/4 miles to Salisbury Cove. The Old Bar Harbor Road is on the left and has a sign for the Biological Lab with a shark on it. My property is just after the Eden Baptist Church Parish Hall.
