The Space: We now have Comcast! Really reliable internet! In 2020, this island cottage underwent a complete renovation where it was was stripped down to its bones and redesigned with stylish finishes and décor that echo the natural elements of the island. The home was fully refinished with new stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and a fully stocked kitchen, and two bright and airy bathrooms with custom bathtubs and showers.
The tropical-themed bedrooms offer guests a spacious retreat to recharge at the end of a long day on the water. The master bedroom and guest bedroom both have flat screen TVs and king-sized beds, and the bunk room has a large sets of bunk beds that offer a cozy space to retire in for the night.
A welcoming screened-in porch and fire pit are located off the back of the cottage among the pines and palmettos, giving guests a private, peaceful setting for enjoying the island breeze.
Guest Access: This island cottage is a single family home on a half-acre lot centrally located on Dauphin Island. Guests will enjoy the entire home to themselves, as well as the large backyard that backs up to a beautiful forest of tropical vegetation. A grill, fire pit, and beach toys are there for guests to enjoy.
The Neighborhood: The 164-acre Audubon Bird Sanctuary is a 5-minute drive (1.8 miles) from the steps of this island cottage. The sanctuary is a well-known destination for birdwatchers in search of one of the hundreds of species that live in and migrate through the sanctuary year-round, such as herons and pelicans. Visitors can take a walking tour though the palmetto palms where they can experience the birds in the lush native flora and fauna of the island.
Just past the bird sanctuary is a popular boat launch on the island, where anglers launch their boats sunrise to sundown, as well as the Mobile Bay Ferry (2.1 miles away). The ferry, which departs every hour and a half during the day, transports passengers to the historic Fort Morgan located across Mobile Bay, only 30 minutes from the beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama.
The Dauphin Island Estuarium, an aquarium that is home to more than 100 different species of native Alabama marine life, and the historic Fort Gaines, where you can find guided tours of the 1821 fort that protected Mobile Bay during the Civil War, are both located less than 10 minutes away from the property. There are three public beaches on Dauphin Island — the East End Public Beach, Bienville Beach and the West End Public Beach. The closest beach access to the cottage is Bienville Beach, which is located about 1 mile away from the home.
With the almost dozen restaurants and snack bars on the island, there’s no shortage of local fare and fresh seafood. Almost every menu on the island serves up the freshest seafood in the South, including freshly caught snapper, grouper, oysters and crab. During the summer there are outdoor movies shown on the West End of the island, and the Dauphin Island Fishing Rodeo during July brings more than 75,000 spectators to the island for a weekend of fun and sports fishing.
Even though the island is small (it’s only 14 miles long and less than 2 miles wide or less, in some areas), it offers an endless amount of activities for vacationers, including an 18-hole golf course and endless water activities. Boat, jet ski, stand-up-paddleboard and kayak rentals are available, as well as sunset cruises and beach access to most of the 17 miles of powder, white sand beaches that wrap around the island. These offerings, in addition to deep-sea fishing and diving, make this Gulf Coast sanctuary one of the top destinations for those looking to escape the crowds and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the gulf.
We hope you enjoy your stay at Maldanado and enjoy exploring the beautiful Alabama Gulf Coast during your visit!

Highly recommend! We thoroughly enjoyed our week stay. Everyone was very nice, polite and friendly. Many things to do with family. The home was accommodating and we had no issues. Will definitely use them again in various locations. JJ
The house was spotless. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed. They don’t have an icemaker— bring your ice. Beds were comfortable. Plenty of towels. Our dogs had plenty of room to go out both in the front yard and the back. My husband has mobility issues so the short walk from the car to the house was very good for him. We didn’t take pictures because the weather was foggy most of the time.
Coffee maker didn’t work. When I informed Shane he first said housekeeping would bring one the next time she came. I insisted he send one, said he would but didn’t. Couldn’t connect to WIFI, contacted Shane, he said to try again despite my already having done that. So no WIFI. No complementary soap, shampoo, not even salt in the kitchen! Shane tried to charge me 169 for pet fee despite ad saying it was 50 for a small dog. My dog is 27 lbs. Home reeked of dog smell
This is the second year we four adults stayed here for the week of bird banding on the island. We love the screened porch on the back where we can bird watch while playing card/dice/board games. It is quite a convenient spot to all the activities on the island yet in a quiet setting. We love this little house and all its amenities, it fits our trips perfectly. The host is attentive but never intrusive. Thank you for letting us stay here.
The house was clean and well kept. They responded quickly to my issues. When I arrived, the key code didn’t work. They supplied 3 possible codes to try and asked me to let them know which one worked. The Internet never worked, even after a hard reset on the router. And the coffee pot didn’t work. It wasn’t ideal. But wasn’t horrible.
We had a great time staying in this home on Dauphin Island. There was plenty of space and it was easy to find. We also appreciated the kitchen had everything needed to cook at the house so we wouldn't need to eat out for every meal. If you have a bike, it's very close to a path that will take you directly to any beach (although there is not an easy way to walk to the beach directly). We even got to enjoy the firepit in the back! I would highly recommend this house as a nice place to stay on the island.
A lot of attention to the comfort of the guests. Beautifully decorated. I had a question and I was contacted quickly with the answer. I would recommend this place.
We were four adults come to the Island for bird watching and relaxation. Cottage in the Pines was perfect for us. The screened-in back porch was our favorite place to sit and watch the birds, especially Bluebirds. We enjoyed watching bird banding, a Market in Green Park and a plant sale. Always a good time on the Island. We hope to stay at Cottage in the Pines again.
We came for 2 nights. The house was cute and well laid out!! It hade new floors and furniture!! Great quiet neighborhood. I even had room to park my 26ft boat and truck still attached. Highly recommended!!

Thank you Matthew, so happy you enjoyed your stay!
The master bath shower doesn't work for people who don't want to get their head wet. Hense, the wife used the bathtub shower which had a drain issue. Didn't know the coffee pot didn't take pods, so we improvised to make it work since there were no filters. The property "for sale" sign in the yard on our last day thru us a loop. But all in all, it suited our purpose.
The house is in a very peaceful area. It is well stocked, however, it was a seek and find game to figure out where everything was located.
I was a little confused at check out because the checkout directions on the refrigerator differed from the checkout directions emailed to me.

Mosquito
No one indicated the mosquitoes this time of year were horrible. It was almost impossible to go from car to the house without being attacked. Something should be done. Put a huge damper on our vacation.

Coildvhave been cleaner
The house size was fine. Lot of bugs and co lb webs around the ceiling and windows. Big gap in front door that let bugs into the house. Two large grass hoppers in the house that we had to get outside.
We enjoyed our stay! The house was clean and perfect for our little family. The kitchen was well stocked and the host was super helpful with recommendations for our first visit on the island. I would recommend packing the groceries you need, as the nearest store is pretty far. The door issue mentioned in a previous review was fixed and we felt very secure. There was some construction noise in the neighborhood, but we wake up early.
The house is within walking distance from a very cute art gallery. We also enjoyed the Audubon Bird Sanctuary even though it was very chilly.
We would recommend staying here, especially for someone who cant do the large amount of stairs like other houses on the island.
Front door still didn't lock, had to pile furniture in front of the door, unsafe rug in living room, leaking shower, ceiling fans horribly dirty, etc...
