Now with NEW OWNERS! Many updates & improvements made – more to come! (keep checking back).

Rocky Bottom Lodge aka “MACs at CHAPEL LANE”, located just south of downtown Baileys Harbor, was one of several homes built during the 1920s and 1930s along Chapel Lane by families desiring a summer retreat from the heat in Chicago and Milwaukee. You will feel the cool and soothing breeze from Lake Michigan directly out your front door.

Accommodations have all been updated throughout including new beds in all rooms, new linens, pillows and rugs. Included are: master bedroom with king sleigh bed and plantation shutters (ceiling fan to come) a bedroom with one queen bed, another bedroom upstairs with two new Jenny Lind twin extra long beds including new mattresses and two full baths. Updates in baths include new rain shower heads and master includes blue tooth speaker shower head. New rugs & shower curtains throughout. Also, there is a bath and four twin beds located above the garage with new linens, pillows, rug and plantation shutters. Two remote controlled ceiling fans are being added in this room along with antler chandelier. There is a queen sleeper in the great room along with a reading nook above.

In the Guest/Boathouse there is a queen sofa sleeper and full bath – new rain shower head. There are newly tuck pointed fireplaces in both the main house and boathouse which also has a full wet bar including new microwave, stainless steel wine fridge and seating area in front of the fireplace – included is a sun room with spectacular unobstructed views of Baileys Harbor and Lake Michigan. There are two ceiling fans and a window AC unit along with a sound system and a new flat screen TV including DirecTV in the boathouse.

DirecTV satellite service is included in the sun-room and great room of the main house. There is also a stereo receiver in the great room that has direct USB hookup for your iPods or smart device audio & speakers.

The kitchen has a new large stainless steel sink, faucet and soap dispenser along with refrigerator/freezer, new electric range with convection oven, dishwasher and coffee maker. New small appliances have also been added for your cooking pleasure. There is a laundry room off the kitchen with a new washer and dryer.

Moving outside you will find expansive grounds for all kinds of lawn games and even a small tennis court to hit a few balls around. This is not a regulation court however. Included is a fire pit and chairs for afternoon relaxation along with both a gas and charcoal grill for your convenience. The boathouse has a large concrete pier to sit outside on, but due to low lake levels, jumping off the pier is strictly prohibited. Water shoes or sandals are recommended for entering the rocky shore while sand beaches are located at both the north and south ends of Baileys Harbor. You can also walk to Maxwelton Braes Golf Club (open to the public).

Dogs are welcome in the house and to use the two run kennel located near the garage. If your pooch tends to bark a lot, please do not leave them unattended so as not to disturb the neighbors.

There are great restaurants, shops and charter fishing less than a mile away in Baileys Harbor. Within seven miles, you can visit the towns of Egg Harbor, Fish Cree, Ephraim, Sister Bay and Jackson Port. Kangaroo Lake, Door County’s largest spring fed lake is also just one mile away.

Rocky Bottom Lodge

  • 3 of 5

The property is very lovely, esp. the fire pit area. We were here for 4 nights and had a fire every night - even the night it rained. On the clear nights we had an awesome view of the moon coming up over the lake. The boathouse was also very nice and so convenient. However we had some problems that made us unhappy with the house. The upstairs bedroom with the queen bed was extremely small - barely enough room to walk around the bed. The shower stall in the garage bathroom was very unsightly and should be replaced. The requirement that the towels be washed and in the dryer by check-out at 10 a.m. is unreasonable. We also had a lot of trouble getting into the house thru the door off the patio - the lock jammed several times. The lock into the boathouse was also very difficult to operate. I did send a list of problems and concerns to the management company but have heard nothing back from them.

Beautiful Cabin!!

  • 5 of 5

I have been going to Door County all of my life and this is by far the BEST place to stay!!!! The property is absolutely beautiful!!! The house is very spacious, with a warm cabin feel. Every evening we had a campfire next to the water and watched the sun rise over Lake Michigan. The location is very close to Egg Harbor, Sister Bay and Fish Creek. This house feels like home and we can’t wait to go back!

Tons of Charm

  • 5 of 5

Loved the setting of this property with a gorgeous view of the water. Lots of green space for kids and pets to play. House has tons of charm. My girls enjoyed the bunk house over the garage as their own little space to play and sleep. We were very comfortable and had plenty of room. Plenty of common space as well as bedrooms. Was very clean with nice, new provided linens and towels. Loved the fire pit setting. I would definitely stay at this cabin again.

The perfect retreat

  • 5 of 5

Such an amazing getaway. It's obvious from the moment you pull into the driveway, the new owners take great pride in this property. Would recommend it to anyone looking to have a relaxing retreat!

Great cottage, Great vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this chapel lane cottage for my 30th birthday. There were 5 couples and we had plenty of room. The property was so charming and the view was spectacular! The interior was beautifully decorated and very clean! The previous reviews do not do this place justice! This was such a great vacation and we can't wait to go back!!

Rocky stay

  • 1 of 5

The exterior and grounds at Rocky Bottom are lovely and the interior of the home has lots of character. Upon closer inspection the charm fades. The house was dirty and there were lots of bugs both dead and alive. The kitchen cabinets had a very musty order. There was evidence of mice. The linens were in desperate need of replacing, some of the towels being in shreds. There were no washcloths or soap povided. The sofa bed in the boathouse was unbearable, and the refridgerator in the boathouse did not work.

We were also disappointed that we were not able to fish or swim from the dock due to low lake level.

If you come with the mindset of "cabin camping" it doesn't seem too bad.

Owner's Response: Updated April 3, 2014: Rocky Bottom Lodge is under new ownership and has been extensively renovated for the 2014 season. Towels and bedding are all new for this season, along with renovations to the master bathroom, upgrades in the boathouse, and work has been done to keep rodents out. We hope you give Rocky Bottom Lodge and its reboot another try. ********************************************** Previous Response: We are sorry to hear of your disappointment, but I am surprised that a "lovely" exterior only merits 1 star. For future renters, the only feedback we received from this guest was that "the supply of towels and dishes are meager at best." The email with that comment was sent after their stay. We could have done a number of things to improve this guest's stay had they contacted us while visiting, including bringing them washcloths. We do provide a starter supply of hand soap so I am unsure why the reviewer claims there was no soap provided. Regarding the sofa sleeper....when have you ever expected a sofa sleeper to be comfortable? We could have tried to have the fridge in the boat house repaired had we been informed it wasn't working. Note there is a fridge in the home as well, so the boat house fridge is just a spare. The description of the property clearly states, "The boathouse has a large concrete pier to sit outside on, but due to low lake levels, jumping off the pier is strictly prohibited," so these guests should not have expected to fish or swim from the dock. It IS a waterfront cabin in the woods, so no matter how well the home is cleaned, there are still likely going to be bugs doing their thing. Rocky Bottom Lodge is a great place to stay, and we are disappointed that this guest did not agree.
