The Kala Beach Cottage is an authentic Kekaha Sugar Plantation Managers Cottage. Lovingly restored with integrity by a professional interior designer, this cottage gives you the obvious sense of classic Hawaii living. Other amenities of this charming cottage include a private enclosed back yard and covered patio, giving the option for outdoor entertaining and/or sunbathing. Enjoy OCEAN VIEWS from the front lanai, and a brief 1 minute walk will take you to the ocean and stretches of sparkling white sand for 15 miles without a house. Here the reef comes onshore and provides protected pools for calm water and swimming. This is an ideal place for children to safely enjoy the water.
At the base, and within minutes of the 'Grand Canyon of the Pacific', the WAIMEA CANYON offers sunny cool weather which is ideal for hiking the many miles of trails through varied native forests and canyon views. You can hike to the cliffs of the NA PALI COAST, often reaching 4000 feet, and see spectacular views of the jagged shoreline and deeply carved valleys where the first Hawaiians lived.
Another option is a 5 mile drive to POLIHALE BEACH STATE PARK, where wide stretches of sand for up to seven miles meet the Na Pali Coast. Here you will find a beach, framed with dunes of up to 100 feet and some of the most beautiful blue water you will see in Hawaii. At end of the beach, near the Na Pali cliffs, you will find showers, bathrooms, and pavilions. This is the place to escape and dry out in the sun on those days where clouds and rain obscure the sun, especially on the north and east shores in the Winter. This is an uncrowded treasure for beach and nature lovers.
This is the sunny westside of Kauai, where rain rarely occurs, and sunny mornings with cobalt blue skies are common. Why gamble your vacation by staying on the North Shore, where rain is constantly replenishing the lush green forests, and sunny days can be infrequent in the Winter months?
Why stay at the Waimea Plantation Cottages, where a 'garden view' cottage starts at $275 per night, when you can have the ultimate privacy of your own beach cottage within a few steps of white sand beaches that go on forever? This side of the island guarantees you an amazing end to each day, offering the opportunity to see a SIZZLING SUNSET over the Pacific Ocean. You may even see the 'green flash'! This is a sweet spot that is affordable when compared to other Kekaha options.
Bring your sunscreen and an umbrella.... you will need it...... because the sun shines here!

Loved this place!!!
We loved the Kala Beach Cottage and found it to be exactly as advertised. The cottage has plenty of kitchen utensils, clean pots and pans in great condition, beach towels, comfortable beds, excellent WI-FI and an absolutely amazing plantation shower!!! There is a nice breeze that blows through the cottage when the windows are open. Proximity to Waimea for local shopping needs and the Waimea Canyon is a huge plus. We enjoyed spending time on the Kekaha beach watching the waves. We also went to Salt Pond State Park to swim several times. So fun!!! We have stayed at three different places on Kauai and our family agrees hands down - this is our favorite!!!
Cute but tired
The Cottage is very cute and well stocked (albeit ageing). It would benefit from a deep clean.
Although area ‘quiet’ the house is on the corner of a four-way stop which is relatively busy with buses general traffic and lorries taking & delivering to industrial facility a few blocks away.
We had a lovely holiday but house location was not really identified in previous reviews.
Adorable & comfortable cottage
Adorable and comfortable cottage! Me and my 75 year-old mother stayed at two places during a 10-day trip. And, our favorite part was staying 5 days at this house. Specifically, drinking morning coffee on the porch, never seeing another tourist, watching locals, listening to kids singing at the adjacent school (and, I'm not even a kid person), and making food in the kitchen which had ample basics. A friendly black & white kitty (I called her Kipu) was always welcoming and we definitely enjoyed her company. Highly recommended for those who appreciate the local life, like their own space, and walks on a beach. (As a general thought when walking on any beaches, please take a trash bag and fill it and show others that we appreciate using their beaches & leave it a little cleaner then we found it). I would rent again in a heartbeat.
The Perfect Beach Cottage
We stayed at the Kala Cottage from 8/15 - 8/24 and could not be happier with our decision. This was our first visit to Kauai and we knew we wanted to stay on the West side away from the busy, touristy, resort areas. Kala Cottage far exceeded our expectations and is even better in person than the pictures, which is a rarity. It is absolutely immaculate and so tastefully decorated...and has everything, I mean everything, you will need, from the beach towels to the snorkel gear, to the fully stocked kitchen, to the games, books, movies and so much more. When we first opened the door, the first words out of our mouths was "Wow, its perfect!" Our favorite was the "outdoor" shower where you hear the birds singing and if you're lucky you might see a little gecko stop by for a visit. We truly felt like we were home our entire stay.
The beach is just a block away and once there, you literally can walk for miles. You'll run into the locals fishing, and see some of the most amazing sunsets ever.
The town of Kekaha is small, quiet and the people are so friendly and laid back. If you are looking to unwind and get away from the hustle and bustle of busy, city life, this is the place.
Mahalo Scott, for sharing the beautiful Kala Cottage, we will definitely be back. You were a delight to work with and made our experience that much better.
GREAT PLACE TO STAY ON THE WESTSIDE
We stayed at the Kala Beach Cottage from 04/09 – 04/16. After a couple initial incidents, which were handled promptly by Sarah, the remaining stay was uneventful and quite relaxing. The service person even stopped by a day later to see if any other problems had arisen. What great service.
If you want to get away from the resort areas and just relax without the hustle and bustle that comes with that lifestyle, the west end is the place to stay. Kekaha is a quiet town almost at the end of the road, with very little happening after the sun goes down. Being located across from a school was not a problem, as all the keiki waiting for school did not create a ruckus. Did not even know they were there.
The cottage is located 1 block from Kekaha State beach and comes fully stocked with everything you need except for food, which can be purchased in Waimea (3 miles east) or on base at PMRF (6 miles west), if you can access the base. There are beach toys, snorkel equipment, beach chairs, umbrella and enough beach towels for a small army.
The cottage iis located a short drive from Waimea canyon and Polihale state beach. To access Polihale beach I recommended you have a 4WD vehicle and read your car rental agreement. You do not want to be stuck out there. It is as far as the road goes on the west side of the island and I am sure the tow charge would be the price of another vacation on Kauai.
This is our 4th time staying in Kauai and each time we have stayed on the west side. The isolation is what makes this so peaceful and quiet. In addition, the Kala Cottage feels like home. Just a nice place to hang out after the sun sets and allow you to recharge for the next days adventure on the Garden Isle. Would definitely rent this property again next time on the island
Perfect quiet getaway
We stayed at the Kala Beach Cottage and were so impressed with the little house. Kekaha is a quiet little town with not much action but it had a little local vibe and it was fun to see the kids going to school across the street. It was nice to get away from the touristy areas.
The house is exactly as the photos show, be achy, clean and quaint. We loved how well the house was stocked (beach towels, beach toys, games and some condiments from previous guests). We didn't need anything extra. The outdoor shower was wonderful as well. The beach across the street was lovely but the waves were high and the rip tides were too (in the winter). Overall, it was a wonderful place and the managers and hosts were very helpful.
26 Miles West of Lihue Airport After Waimea Town.
Other Activities: Shopping, Kayaking, Shelling, Wildlife Viewing, Boating, Basketball Court.
