Casa De Las Joyas...Sweet Casita Near Xcacel Beach

Bedrooms 2
Space 650 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 5 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Casa De Las Joyas is a colorful little slice of heaven and a wonderful, comfortable place to stay. the casa is located in a neighborhood of small homes originally built for locals within walking distance of Xcacel Beach. Xcacel Beach is home to turtle nesting grounds, and therefore protected by the Mexican government. Several publications have listed this beach as one of the top ones in Mexico, if not the world.

Decorated and painted in true Mexican style this 'jewel box' is perfect for those who are looking for a more traditional Mexican holiday experience. Much of the furniture was made by local artisans as we like to support our Riviera Maya economy. You might want to spend part of the day relaxing in the hammock in the backyard, listening to the gentle rush of falling water. Or you may want to take your morning coffee in the front yard, while admiring the park, listening to the native birds and enjoying the large fountain.

About Shelley

My name is Shelley, and I'm a native Californian. I hate to sound ungrateful, because I live very near the Pacific Ocean, but I LOVE the calm waters of the Caribbean. I never dreamed I would own a home in Mexico, partly because I can be kind of a Four Seasons type of gal, and didn't want to have many responsibilities when I go on vacation. So I put a lot of amenities into the house so it feels like you're taking a high end vacation, but it just doesn't cost nearly as much!

I live near Pismo Beach, CA and I have a young daughter who loves coming to Chemuyil almost as much as I do. This might become a retirement destination, but that is many years away, so for now it is my beloved vacation home, and I hope you will love it too!

Shelley purchased this house in 2008

Why Shelley chose Tulum

After falling in love with the Akumal area in the early 90's I never made it back until 2007. I still loved it, but couldn't believe how much development had happened over a decade. Chemuyil is only 4 miles away from Akumal, but it is a sweet reminder of how Akumal used to be 10 years ago. When an opportunity came to purchase my home I couldn't pass it up! The pueblo (pop. 1000)is terrific, our little neighborhood has been lovingly updated and I love being so close to beach club action (Tulum), Snorkelling (Akumal) nightlife (Playa del Carmen) and boating (Puerto Aventuras). All very close by.

What makes this house unique

Chemuyil is such a quiet oasis, and I have one of only 5 homes that overlook the little park in our neighborhood (and the only one of the 5 that is available for rent). Sunrise and tea in the front yard admiring the park, morning and early afternoon at the beach, or Xel Ha or a cenote or shopping or...okay, the list goes on and on!! Late afternoons lounging in the hammock in the back yard, maybe sipping on a cerveza or margarita (I admit it, Happy Hour starts a little earlier for me in Mexico!). Evenings out at a small restaurant in the pueblo, or something near/on the beaches nearby. Okay, the casa has a perfectly lovely, fully stocked kitchen, and I do occasionally cook there! When my daughter is with me she loves the playgrounds in the pueblo, snorkelling in the calm waters of Akumal or going to the eco parks.

One of my favorite things is that I can relax from day one down there, knowing I can do as little or as much as I want, because it feels like heaven on earth to me.

Wonderful stay for our family

  • 5 of 5

Great location near fantastic Xcacel beach, where we swam and snorkeled and took dips in the Cenote there and get nibbled by tiny fish. Also, across the street from the casa were 2 small cenotes where you could go and relax at the middle or end of day. Always felt completely safe as we walked day or night to nearby Chemuyil for a variety of foods or pick up something from the small grocery. Casa was well appointed and had all our basic needs. Was fun to go to busier ruins, Tulum, Xel-ha park, etc, and come back to laid back Chan Chemuyil and sit on the porch or patio and listen to crickets, frogs, and star gaze. Wi-Fi was a bonus and AC was great for when we arrived back hot from an outing and needed to cool off quickly. Cheerful neighbors - Carolers came singing, and Santa even visited our 10 year old on Christmas eve! Rental car was useful to access all local activities. Highly recommended!

Loved it! It was my second time and I will go again. It’s a great way to experience a gorgeous area.

This is a cute little house with all the basics— plus a lot of charm on the side— in a friendly neighborhood with a beach you can walk to. You can sit out in the private backyard courtyard for meals, say hello to the occasional passerby in the front patio, and feel less constrained than you would in a resort. You can walk to town or to the beach, and watch DVD’s at night from the owner’s nice collection, or borrow a book for the beach. The house is colorfully decorated and has a wonderful, warm feel. I made smoothies every morning in the compact but cute kitchen, which you couldn’t do in a hotel. Staying there makes you feel you know the owner, and would be friends with her. She was amazingly responsive when a circuit breaker tripped and we didn’t fix the right one. Her neighbors love her, which says a lot. The caretaker, Patricio, has kind eyes and a gentle manner and remembered me even though it had been two years since he saw me, and it was the same with a neighbor. I would not stay anywhere else when near Tulum. It’s a good location— we took the ferry to Cozumel one day and had a simply glorious day we will remember forever, went to a night amusement park in Playa del Carmen and didn’t mind the drive back late at night, spent a few days trying different beach clubs, restaurants with completely different vibes, and biking around Tulum, and felt like happy beach bums at Turtle Bay in Akumal, which has the best breakfast around. I want to live here!

Traveled to Chan Chemuyil with my husband and our two young kids (ages 3, 5). Nice, quaint place close to great beaches and cenotes! Quiet neighborhood, everyone was very friendly while we were there! We will definitely be back!

Sweet low key casita in between Akumal and Tulum

  • 4 of 5

A very nice low key casita about a 20 minute drive to Tulum beaches and a 10 minute drive to Akumal beach.

Like other reviewers' comments mention, we highly recommend renting a car if choosing this property. While technically "walking distance" to beautiful Xcacel beach, it is a pretty substantial walk. Xcacel beach is not developed and has no services (restaurants, dive rentals etc) to offer - and that is one of its charms to be sure- but if you want to spend the day there (and you should!), hauling a cooler and deck chairs (provided) with food, some shade, snorkel gear etc... You'll be happier taking your car over. Bike rentals were available, but the roads are rough and didn't seem too fun to ride on.

The house itself is just as the photos describe and very comfortable, with nice decorative touches and a charming patio where we enjoyed coffee and breakfast each morning. It is a small 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom that was perfect for the two of us. The AC, and fans worked great and we enjoyed preparing meals in a modest but well appointed kitchen with pots, pans and the all important coffee maker! If you want to be in the action, this may be just a tad out of the way for you. Restaurants and nightlife are a drive away, as is a supermarket and bank etc... However if you shun the mega-resort vibe and prefer something more down home, this is a good fit. The casita is part of a small housing development near the local village of Chemuyil which is refreshingly non touristy and provides an authentic Mexican feel. Depending on the wind direction, you can hear the nearby highway, but generally this area is quiet with many Americans neighbors.

The owner was terrific and property managers who helped us with getting settled in were great.

We enjoyed our stay and recommend to anyone who is looking for a low key yet comfortable home as a base to explore this beautiful region.

Winter Getaway

  • 5 of 5

I feel like writing this review for Casa de las Joyas will be a double-edged sword because I'm afraid it's only going to get more popular and therefore less available for me to rent again. That being said, I truly have nothing but great things to say about la Casa de las Joyas in Chan Chemuyil. The owner has gone above and beyond to make the home more than comfortable. The kitchen is a decent size and the coffee maker is functional (which is important for us) - all you need to save some money by cooking for yourself. The 20 liter drum of water was great for us so we didn't have to purchase water. The movie library is extensive and was a treat during the evenings. The accessibility to the beach is PHENOMENAL! We rented bikes for our 10 day stay and didn't need anything else. We strapped the beach chairs (provided by the owner to borrow during your stay) and beach towels to our back and headed to the beach every day. The snorkeling at the local beach is great and perfect for people who aren't super into doing organized tours. All in all, our stay was such a treat, and I'm so grateful we found Casa de las Joyas!

Quaint little home - perfect if you want to be away from it all

  • 3 of 5

We loved the casa, but found out quickly upon arrival that we really should have rented a car. The location was not as I had expected - the beach was quite a long walk; you walk through the jungle or via the community streets (that takes much longer), cross a major highway with a barrier in the middle, then once you reach the other side, it's a hike to the beach down the long gravel road. We stayed 6 days and went to the beach once - it was too far for my 4-year-old daughter to walk in 90 degree weather and the bugs in the jungle were relentless. The seaweed was really bad this year as well, so there were bugs that jumped all over your skin as you went through it or attempted to hop over it to get to the water. The casa does not have a pool which turned out to be painful for us staying in one place for so long. We walked to town a couple of times, but again - it's a pretty long walk if you have small children in 90+ degrees and the bug bites accumulating. The property managers onsite were amazing and SO very helpful. We thought that we'd be closer to town, so when we arrived and it was dark, we did not know that we would have no way of getting food because you have to walk so far. The property managers stopped by and actually drove my mom to the grocery store so that she could buy us a couple of days worth of food. We took our laundry into town to get washed and when we went back the next day to pick it up, the place was closed. This was a major problem since we were leaving the next day. The property managers called and drove us to pick it up that next morning - thankfully. We really don't know what we would have done had they not been there. In the housing community within which this casa sits there are more American individuals than there are Mexican natives as far as I could tell. We had been expecting a more "real" and less "american" experience, I guess. That said, the house was clean and had everything that we needed to cook. The air conditioning was pretty good, but not great and the windows don't shut all of the way. You must spray Raid all over the doors and walls because the bugs are so bad, which again was an issue because of my 4-year-old daughter having to breath in the fumes. The bugs were so very bad that it seemed that no matter what kind of spray or lotion you used to repel them, they only worked about 50%. The backyard is private and very nice - we loved the fact that they had clotheslines.
