About the property

MARSHVIEW; Large KIT; Spacious LR; 3 bedrooms; 1 full & 1/2 bath, SLEEPS 7

Our lovely home is a short, 500-yard walk to beautiful, private Moody Beach-- voted one of the best beaches on the East Coast. CONTACT US FOR 2018 RATES!

Our home, Marshview, is a large, two-story duplex, located on a quiet, private road. The Southside Cottage sleeps 7, as does the Northside cottage. (See rental #229249.) For large gatherings or groups of more than 7, rent the entire house. With all the amenities it's a great place for vacations, family reunions, wedding stays and so much more.

Since we purchased MARSHVIEW in the late 1980s, we've updated, renovated & redecorated. We remodeled our large, fully-equipped kitchen with new countertops and tile backsplashes, as well as painted it in soothing, cool shades of blues. The half bath on the first floor has been completely rebuilt with new fixtures and tile floors.

In the spacious living room, you can hear the waves, catch the smell of the sea, and be lulled by the ever-changing light. We hope this adds to your beach experience. This area is furnished with comfortable furniture, lots of pillows, games, TV, DVD, and internet.

On the second floor, there are three bedrooms and a full bath. We installed new flooring throughout the upstairs, making it easier to keep this area sand free. The refreshing blue walls combined with the mutating light give each room a unique feel.

The large master bedroom with a queen-sized bed is in the front of the house. It’s a prime location to hear the waves crashing against the sea wall, one street away. By keeping the windows open it's usually cool enough to need the quilts on the beds or even the blankets that are stored in each closet. On those atypical days when it’s HOT in Maine, there are fans in each closet. The middle bedroom contains two twin beds and a roll-a-way. The back bedroom has two singles and overlooks the ever changing Rachel Carson Preserve with its sights and sounds of various birds and other wildlife.

The back deck is a lovely area. It’s a “cool” place to drink your morning coffee or the perfect spot to view the spectacular sunsets. It overlooks the Rachel Carson Sanctuary and Preserve, a thriving habitat for many species migratory birds. So you’ll want to bring your binoculars, camera or paint/sketch pad. The Preserve is also a great place for canoeing and kayaking. You can rent these at various places in the area.

In Marshview’s large backyard, you have your own charcoal grill and picnic table. There is a fire pit and hot & cold outdoor shower that are shared by both sides. The front yard is pleasant, oversized and perfect for playing—but not for parking!

To make it easier for our guests when you first arrive, there is a roll of toilet paper in each bathroom, a dish towel and dish cloth, as well as a roll of paper towels. There is also olive oil & vinegar, vegetable spray, salt & pepper, kitchen garbage bags, dish detergent & hand soap. (The only thing I ask is that you leave a note for my housekeeper if you run out, as a courtesy to the next guests.) There are 4 low-slung, sand chairs for your use. We bought a Beach Buggy for you to transport your belongings to beach. Blankets & pillows are provided, but guests must provide their own sheets, towels, etc. and we ask that you respect what's ours!

Spectacular Moody Beach is a private, sandy beach that provides something for people of all ages and all tastes. It’s a place for surfers and walkers, body surfers, surf casters, kayaker, or for those who just want to enjoy the sun and sea. Its tidal pools are spots where the young can enjoy the water and build their sand creations.

In the evening and the moon is full, the scene of the moon of the ocean is breathtaking. Regardless, the beach is usually lit by bonfires and flood lights to enhance the ocean’s stunning and mysterious views.

A new kitchen suite, new living furniture and a dishwasher to make your stay more carefree!

The beach is a great place to walk anytime—day or night. Just north to of our public right-of-way is a rock jetty. Our grandchildren amuse themselves for hours finding treasures in those “hidden caves that might have been left by pirates long ago”. At low tide, you can take a 4-5 mile walk on the beach south to Ogunquit, the Marginal Way or Perkins Cove.

Go out to Ocean Avenue; turn left—i.e. north: Walk or ride your bike and take a 3+mile ride along Ocean Avenue with its breath-taking views of the sea. (Bring your camera.) You might catch sight of the seals basking in the sun on the rocks near Wells Beach. You won’t be disappointed as the sea crashes against the sea wall or draws back to reveal the rock formations that are gradually transformed from one summer to the next.

In the house, we’ve collected pamphlets about emergency services, churches, art galleries, museums, tourist attractions, historical sites, deep sea fishing and whale watch cruises and more. There are golf courses in Wells, York, Kennebunkport and Kennebunk which can accommodate all skill levels. The Ogunquit Playhouse has been producing professional theatre since 1933 featuring show business legends. It’s an opportunity to see quality, Broadway productions at prices you can afford.

All this information is in a basket on the bottom shelf of the table next to the front door. Relax on the back deck and plan what you like to do next.

There’s much to do in addition to going to the beach. Take a ride alone Maine’s beautiful coastline, through its historic fishing villages and towns, meandering roads, antique shops, or art galleries. There are books at the house about the history of Moody Beach and Wells. They weave the history of the Coast, trace it and makes some conclusions about the emergence of the area today. The Destination Guides, that are in the basket near the door, also have activities for children, trolley rides, day trips, deep-sea fishing, whale watching, cruises, lectures, and much more.

There are high-end outlets in Kittery and Freeport--the home of LL Bean--selling everything from housewares to family apparel and accessories. Interesting boutiques feature one-of-a-kind gifts, hand-crafted items, as well as designer jewelry, leather goods and more. You can’t leave Maine without bringing something home with you.

Right up on Route 1, in the same plaza as Hannaford's Supermarket, go to Naviina Day Spa, a full service salon and day spa. (Naviina is derived from Sanskrit meaning new, fresh and modern.) Schedule a massage or facial with Jen. (Tell her Barbara sent you.) She is exceptional. I literally come up to Maine just for Jen’s massage. Call first--even before you arrive--to ensure you get the appointment you want.

Who would think of coming to Maine without eating a lobster dinner? One of my favorite places for lobster, clam chowder or fish dinners is Fisherman’s Catch, a rustic, friendly, family-owned restaurant off Route 1N on Harbor Rd. on the way to Wells Harbor. (If I don’t eat there several times a season, I go into withdrawal.) There are places where you can buy your lobster already cooked or raw and bring it home to cook or eat. Sometimes, there are festivals in Wells, Ogunquit or surrounding towns which often feature fish fries, lobster bakes, etc. Check in the basket I've left, on the bottom shelf of the table right inside the front door, there’s a schedule of events in the front. Find the free Tourist News weekly newspaper which is full of everything that's going on.

From the ever crowded Egg & I to the Old Village Inn, That Place in Ogunquit and Barnacle Billy’s in Perkins Cove, Clay Hill, Varano’s, Federal’s and Fisherman’s Catch are just a few of the restaurants we like. Merriland Farm Café offers a fantastic breakfast, as well as lunch and dinner. (This is where the homemade jam we given you is from.) Check the ever-expanding basket. Some people are good enough to leave notes in the sign-in book or cards, menus that give you their picks for great places to eat.

Our home is open from May to October—depending on Nature’s cooperation. July is almost always full; August, September have some vacancies. June, and early October are currently available. See the calendar. Many people reserve for the next summer before they leave. We have guests who have become like family--we know their children, are excited about family weddings, and wild about their the births of the Grandes.

Spring and Autumn are lovely times of the year. It’s quiet; there are no lines and the prices are lower. The color of the landscape and sea are different than in the summer, but they are striking and breathtaking. We love being here at all times of the year.

Any season is enriched by being here in Maine! We hope you'll spend your vacation at our lovely, seaside home!

We try to make Marshview seem as if, as one of our guests says, “my own summer home”. Come and make it yours for a week or two. It is a great compliment when people tell us how they look forward to coming to Marshview and are unhappy to leave.

Thanks so much visiting our website. We hope you visit our home,

For a number of years before we bought Marshview, my husband and I came to Moody Beach on vacation. Our time here was a delightful respite from our stressful lives. When we would drive over the Portsmouth Bridge, we could feel the stress leave our bodies, smell the sea air and experience a sense of well-being. Our children loved coming here; they made friends with whom they still maintain ties.

In 1988, we purchased Marshview and that’s when the work began. That first year, every weekend from Thanksgiving to May on Thursday or Friday afternoon, we left New York drove 4-5 hours to Maine to work on the house. Most of the work we did was invisible: we stripped the rooms of layers-upon-layers of wallpaper; rewired the electric; cleaned, cleaned, cleaned; de-cluttered and more; we threw out broken and old furniture; and we never thought our home would be ready to open to guests.

The house was dark inside so we began by painting it light colors to bring the outside—in. Our painting projects have gone through many changes throughout the years as we try to attain the perfect “Beach Style”.

Decorating has always been more fun than putting on a new roof, rebuilding the subfloor, installing hardwood floors in the living rooms and new kitchen floors, remodeling and replacing everything in bathrooms on both sides of the house—including the floors, walls, ceilings. But these things had to be done, so during the years we’ve done all of these things also.

Most of the hard work is done. Now I work so Marshview reflects the blue of the sky and the azure of the water, the sparkle of the sun and sand, the freshness of the atmosphere--all that's wonderful about being here.

We love being the owners of Marshview. We’ve met such lovely people and welcomed them and their families to our home. We appreciate hearing about their stays. We hope you will join us too.

Write us about a visit.

Why BARBARA MURPHY chose Southern Coast

WHY STAY AT MARSHVIEW? In addition to being a lovely, comfortable home only 500 yds. from the beach, Marshview is in a great location. We’re only a trolley ride from Ogunquit with its boutiques, specialty shops, restaurants for all tastes and clubs to enjoy dancing and singing. (Don’t forget to stop at the fabulous & unique “Spoiled Rotten” on Beach St.) There are concerts at Ogunquit harbor.

Take Shore RD. (at the crazy intersection in Ogunquit) toward Perkins Cove, and in addition to tempting eateries there are many art galleries. In Perkins Cove seafood restaurants abound and it’s a port for sight-seeing cruises, deep sea fishing and other activities. There are jewelry designers, potters and other interesting shops.

Drive further south on Route 1, stop in York at the amusement park, the game farm, the taffy store and its historic village. Or travel south for another 30 minutes, you’ll find the Kittery outlets which line both sides of the road. Many people enjoy shopping at the Kittery Trading Post.

North from our house on Route 1 is the Village of Kennebunk and to the northeast is Kennebunkport—two great places to visit. In addition to the beauty of nature and the summer home of George H. Bush, there are art galleries, boutiques, novelty and clothes stores, designer jewelry, potters, and of course—restaurants.

Further north the meandering roads take you through quaint fishing villages, where antique shops abound. In about 30-40 min., you arrive in Freeport, the home of L.L. Bean and other high-end outlets. It’s an easy town in which to walk around, with lots of rest stops, sidewalk or restaurant food and great shopping. Don’t miss having lobster at Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster Company, located on the beautiful South Freeport waterfront in South Freeport, Maine. It’s a local landmark for natives and visitors alike. This is a “must” for us; we sit, enjoy the food, relax & enjoy view of the beautiful harbor. It's a great way to end a day.

What makes this house unique

It’s nice to have all the benefits of home without the hassle. Each year, Mike and I try to make sure we provide the amenities—both large and small—to add to your enjoyment. Although I’ve written about all the great area restaurants, our kitchen is spacious and a great gathering place for family meals. If you’d like to eat breakfast out, try the Egg & I, or Merriland Farms. Located off Rt. 1 north going toward Kennebunk on Coles Hill Road in Wells, the food is a treat, as is the jam we always leave for our guests as a gift. (There’s also a nice executive golf course there.) Marshview is great because it's an easy, short walk--only 500 yds.--to the beach—and what a beach it is! It’s private, sandy, friendly and a gathering center for the neighbors, but there’s always room to find a quiet spot for you and family. The beach is the scene of football, baseball and bocce other games, horseshoes, kit flying, Frisbee contests. There are sand castles, mermaids of all kinds, sand toys and sea shells.

Just looking at the ocean is a source of respite. Lobster boats, yachts, pleasure crafts, lobster traps, Nubble Lighthouse, Kennebunkport, Ogunquit and Perkins Cove are all visible. (On the Fourth of July, fireworks can be seen from Ogunquit and from Kennebunkport.) Standing in, dodging or riding the waves, surfing, tubing, kayaking, canoeing are some of the activities people enjoy. Others love walking, looking for shells, bike riding, searching for hermit crabs or other ocean treasures.

Our rooms are large, airy, bright and clean. They're designed and furnished with you and your family in mind. If you want to stretch your vacation dollar, staying at Marshview is less expensive than staying in one of the homes on the beach. We take pride in our home and what we offer to our guests.

Just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed staying there. We stayed there before, and we loved the changes and updates that you've made. We found the place very comfortable and pleasant. In fact, we loved it so much we're coming back again next summer. Thanks so much.

Just North of Ogunquit Village on Route 1; Go to Bourne Ave; take right; Go to Ocean; take right on Marsh, House on North West corner of Marsh and So. Tibbetts.

One of the most breath-taking features of your visit is the ever-changing ocean herself. Each new tide effectuates a new vista. She changes the beach and leaves her mark throughout the day.

How wonderful to catch low tide at dawn or sunset so you can walk the beach in all its painted beauty and on the ease of firm sand. Those miles seem effortless!

++Take the Trolley (information at the house) and visit Ogunquit and Perkins Cove to eat at one of the quaint restaurant and/or shop at the many boutiques. There's something for everyone.

+Don't forget that Perkin's Cove is a fishing village offering deep sea fishing, moonlight-, dinner-, and sight-seeing cruises, as well as seafood restaurants catering to all tastes and pocketbooks.

++You can rent a canoe on Route 1 and enjoy exploring the Rachel Carson Preserve, right behind the house, up close and personal. Our guests love it.

++There are several competitive 18-hole golf courses near by in Sanford, Wells and Cape Arundel. Information can be found on the web at 'Golfing in Maine'. My husband and son enjoy these courses.

++There are marvelous boutiques, curiosity shoppes, "lobsta shacks", as well as sit-down restaurants that cater to all tastes and pocketbooks. There are festivals, featuring locally made food, gifts, etc.. I have a basket at the house that contains brochures, local news papers, and more so you can take advantage of "What's Happening". ++Additionally, the Wells Chamber of Commerce is right up the street at the intersection of Borne Avenue and Route 1, by Jake's Seafood--which has great clam chowder.

++One of our favorite places to eat is Fisherman's Catch. They feature a variety of food, but the lobster is great. Finish the evening by taking Route 1 further north to Big Daddy's Homemade Ice Cream! You'll thank yourself.

++Take an afternoon after you've had enough sun and visit Freeport, with its great outlet. There's ample parking and it's a walk-around village, which means you can just park your car in one of LLBean's free lots and shop for the day. When you're done, go to Freeport Harbor and go to Haraskeet Brother's for Fresh lobster--right off the boat!

Perfect homebase for vacation with friends!

  • 5 of 5

Everything we expected in a sea-side cottage! Comfortable but not-fussy furnishings made it easy for our family (mom, dad, two 10-year old boys) to enjoy our stay. The detail-oriented owners have thought of everything from a blowdryer to a lobster pot, a beach-trip buggy to beach chairs. Clean and airy. Would return in a blink! Thank you, Barbara!

Marshview is a place were family memories are made.

  • 5 of 5

Marshview is a comfortable home nicely located overlooking the marsh with fabulous sunsets and only a short walk away to a beautiful flat sandy beach. Our multigenerational family also took advantage of a plethora of amenities close by in Keenebunkport, Ogunquit and York.

My Favorite Place to be in the Summer!

  • 5 of 5

A summer beach home without the hassle of owning it yourself! That is how I would describe every visit we make to this beautiful beach house each summer. Barbara makes sure each year she does something to add to what is already a perfect place to spend the week with your family. Sitting on the back deck looking out at the sunset is perfect but if you want the beach a short walk brings you to beautiful Moody Beach. If a rainy day hits the area no worries, you can comfortably sit and read in the comfortable living room or head out to the little shops or major outlets all within a short drive. if you want to cook (which I personally try not to do on vacation!! haha) the kitchen is well stocked and plenty of room. My only complaint is I can't stay the entire summer!

Clean, Close to the Beach, Perfect for family

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at this house for labor day this past summer with our three girls. It was more than enough space for us and we had a great time. The back deck looks out onto the marsh where you can see the most amazing sunsets. The house is located on a back block so there is not a lot of traffic so we could also sit on the front porch and watch our girls play on the front lawn or ride their bikes in the street. It is a very short walk to the beach and the beach is amazing! If we weren't at the beach or the house we were out and about the town at one of the many great restaurants on Rt. 1 or shopping in the little shops in Ogunquit. We'll definitely be returning to this house in future summers.

This house is just a short walk from the beach in a family-friendly atmosphere. The home is updated frequently and the owners are very accommodating. The backyard faces the marsh and provides an excellent view of wildlife. Our family has stayed here for the past four years and will continue to do so in the future.
