Lovely little place, not so lovely communication
The unit it's self was just what we needed. The kitchen was dated, we found some garbage behind the beds and under the couch and the sliding glass door to the deck stuck but nothing we couldn't live with. Short walk to the beach and comfortably removed from the hubbub of downtown.
The checkin/check out process and communication with the host was awful. First we received no instruction on how to access the rental when we arrived. The address posted in the VRBO listing took us to a private home. The person at the home was not pleased. When I was able to get a hold of someone at surf coast reality they told us we were supposed to come to them to get the keys and gave us a completely different address than was list on the VRBO page. When I tried to bring up the address issue with the assumed owner, I was completely dismissed. The day before check out, I sent the owner a message because I has still not received any instructions about check out procedures and cleaning. I received no response. My partner and I both attempted to call surf coast to get more information and only got their answering service, with several promises of a call back that never came to fruition. We ended up checking out 1 hour late because we were trying to clean the apartment. When the cleaning ladies showed up we hastily loaded our things and left. We left the keys at the unit. The cleaning ladies told my partner that the condition of the unit was fine. Two days after we checked out I received a message from one hoast (Miranda) telling us that we did not have to clean anything and asking if we left the keys followed by a request for more money from the other host (bill) due to dishes being left out, food being left in the fridge and for the late check out. The only food we left was the food that was there when we got there. The dishes left were minimal.
I think the owners would be wise to put together a packet or something outlining the house rules and expectations so something like this doesn't happen again in the future. We did what we could with what we had. We will not be paying the additional fee as we feel the little information we were given was after the fact and conflicting between the two host parties.
Overall the location was lovely, the host experience needs work.
