HISTORY OF THE HOUSE: Somesville is where Abraham Somes, the first permanent settler on Mt Desert lived. The house was built for Abraham Somes III, the namesake and grandson of the first settler of Mt. Desert Island. Abraham lived there with his wife Adeline Freeman Somes. Abraham was a shipbuilder and traveled to the West Indies, New Haven, Boston and Portland. This home is still owned by Somes descendants and is listed on the National Historic Register. It was once rented to the poet, Elinor Wylie and Thomas Berger, author of Little Man, Big Man.

ABOUT THE VILLAGE OF SOMESVILLE: Somesville is the quintessential New England village full of white clapboard houses. The entire village is a National Historic Landmark and in order to preserve the character of town the speed is 25 mph. Our house is situated at the end of Somes Sound which cuts through the middle of the island. The view is spectacular from the house looking down Somes Sound the only fjord on the east coast. It is the perfect place to end your day on the island. The Somesville Library, The Gallery at Somes Sound, and The Mt. Desert Island Historical Society, and its picturesque bridge are across the street. Diana, the owner, is an artist in the Gallery at Somes Sound.

Enjoy a stroll through Somesville and soak in the charm. If you are lucky, you may catch the Blueberry or Strawberry Festival.

Somesville has a well-stocked convenience store, bank, ATM, church, post office, and a great summer stock theater, the Acadia Repertory Theater. Walk up to the children’s plays on Wednesday and Saturday. They are really a treat for all ages. Three golf courses within 10 minutes! Wonderful dining choices are only seven minutes away.

We live about 2 miles away from the house. We are available to answer questions to make sure you have a wonderful visit to Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island. We have a wealth of information about the island which we love to share. We are also available to help if there are any problems during your stay.

AIRPORTS: The closest airport is Bar Harbor Airport (BHB) which is about 10 minutes from Willowbrook. Then Bangor International Airport (BGR) is one hour. There is a shuttle to Mt. Desert from the Bangor airport. You need to make a reservation and it is about $30. The cheapest fares seem to be from Southwest Airlines flying into Manchester, New Hampshire, which is a 5 hour drive to Willowbrook. There are also good fares with Air Tran into Portland. You can rent a car from Hertz or Enterprise.

Somes Pond - Fresh water pond - Take a right out our driveway and it is 1/4 of a mile up the road on the left. There is a grassy area which leads into the pond.

Long Pond - Head toward Southwest Harbor and take a right at the Firehouse and go about 2 miles it will be on your left. There is a dock to swim out to and it is great for kids. There is also a 2 miles hike from the south end out to Duck Rock which is a huge rock great for swimming for all ages.

Echo Lake - 3 miles toward Southwest Harbor Man-made beach on a fresh water lake perfect for children. Changing rooms/Shallow for at least 200 feet out

Carriage Roads - What is a carriage road? It is the perfect place to walk, hike, and bike. There are over 57 miles of carriage roads on Mt. Desert. About The Owner

As a young child, my parents brought us to Mt Desert. I have always been in love with the island and wanted to capture its magic. I have a masters in Art History and Museum work and worked in the Smithsonian before raising three children. I have always been in love with the quality of light in Maine. I paint on the island in the summer and you can see my work at the Gallery Somes Sound in Somesville near the house.

The Owner purchased this house in 1968

Why The Owner chose Somesville

This property is in the center of the island so you don’t spend 40 minutes going from one side to the other! We have the free island explorer bus up the street so you can see the island without driving. We have ocean access, but also we are the only town which has 3 lakes perfect for swimming within 5 minutes. You can also rent kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards on nearby Long Pond or walk up the street to Somes Pond for a swim. This is a home you can have 12 -15 people and not feel on top of each other as our house is spacious and well stocked.

What makes this house unique

There is nothing like waking up the the morning mist floating over the Mill Pond down to the harbor. We have ocean and lake access within walking distance.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Diana was charming and very helpful. She even met with me a month before the rental to show me the house and recommended restaurants that could accommodate 14 people. She answered all my emails and stopped by to make sure that we had everything we needed. Seven couples shared the house comfortably without feeling crowded. The kitchen has new appliances and well stocked with pots and pans, coffee maker and microwave and dishes. The washer and dryer was a plus. The house is tastefully decorated and had everything we needed for a long 4 day weekend. The view from the front bedrooms and the front porch is a quintessential Maine view of water, sailboats with mountains in the background. It is not within walking distance of stores and restaurants, but we spent no more than 15 minutes driving to get to Acadia, Bar Harbor or Southwest Harbor and just a little longer to Northeast Harbor. Since we were 14 old friends from all over the country, we spent a fair amount of time in the house and the front porch and enjoyed exploring the various rooms of this 1890 house and its original artwork done by Diana, her aunts and her mother. Diana mentioned that families with children stay at the house. I would have been a little nervous about letting my kids loose in such an elegant house, but it is a perfect place for a group of adults. Just a great place to have a relaxing stay on MDI.

We are in the center of the island which means less travel time for guests to each area of the island. The free Island Explorer stops up the street. A fresh water pond is up the street as well. Great space for families with two living room areas and 3 wings for privacy. It is very special to wake up to our view and live in a home full of the history of Mount Desert! When you come home after a day on the island it will be a treat to enjoy 'Willowbrook' the home of Abraham Somes III grandson of the first settler of Mount Desert.

Family reunion at Willowbrook

  • 5 of 5

Willowbrook was a perfect house for our week long vacation for our family of seven adults and seven children. There was plenty of space to spread out. We loved our family dinners in the dining room. It is rare to find a dining room where we could all dine together. The location was perfect for sightseeing. Our grandchildren loved playing ball on the huge yard. They also enjoyed fishing on the pond across the street. Every afternoon we swam at Somes pond which was just up the street. It is great being across from the bus stop.

The thirty page information book was a great help in planning our stay. It is rare to find a home where the kitchen had everything that you needed. The home is very well equipped. There are a huge number of china and wine glasses. We needed a new can opener and Diana delivered it the next day. She also arranged to have the wireless repaired. She takes great care to keep the home in perfect condition. The home is extremely well managed. Diana recommended Red Sky in Southwest Harbor and Thurston's Lobster Pound which were both great. You can also cook lobsters at the home and everything is there including a Martha Stewart recipe on cooking lobsters.

Magical stay with a big, extended family of all ages

  • 5 of 5

Highlights: Location, layout, space, views, and the owner's spot-on recommendations for everything from activities to restaurants.

We just spent a fabulous, magical week at Willowbrook. With ten family members from age 5 to 79, and varying appetites for types of activity, the house was the ideal location and layout for us. Located centrally, it was an easy car or bus ride to any place on the island. The historical society next door, the access to Sound down the street, the rolling lawn the kids could explore, everything combined to make this a wonderful place to stay.

We did have to do a bit of warning the smaller kids not to be too rough with the old furniture, but overall, this house was built for comfort. The rambling layout meant everyone could get some space of his or her own, and the quirky charm felt so much more special than a bland modern place could. Some of us loved getting up early and sipping coffee outside; others loved the game room and well-stocked kitchen. In short: a perfect place to stay and get to know and love the whole island.

June Mornings in Willowbrook, Somesville, ME

  • 5 of 5

Willowbrook is absolutely the best stay ever, located in the center of all of the Mt. Desert Island/Acadia National Park activities. It was a spectacular gathering place for our family (12 with 5 children ages 5-14.) Diana is a most responsive hostess, and checked with us several times to ensure that our lodging needs were being met.

The authentically old and most wonderful house is nestled into the village and unbelievably accommodating with its multiple bedrooms/bathrooms and living/kitchen/dining space. We happily took turns cooking as a family, used the yard for a great gathering/play space, and the porches for quiet reading and discussions.

The bedrooms and living areas with the view of Mill Pond across the road delighted all with early sunrise and a resident eagle, osprey, and sea gulls over a classic Maine tidal landscape. We made it a morning and evening ritual to visit the Somesville Library benches to watch nature in action. Other bedrooms overlooked the Somesville bridge, the most photographed bridge in all of Mt. Desert Island. No wonder!

We had the most delightful time on the island: hiking, swimming, boating, and eating. It was always good, though, to know that Willowbrook was waiting on us as our temporary family home.

Beautiful historic home with amazing scenery surrounding it

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just hosted a small 40 person wedding on this property and it was amazing ! The scenery sorrouding the property ( Sommes Sound across the street, beautiful white bridge next door, flowers and greenery in the actual yard) made for incredible wedding pictures! The weather was perfect which definitely played a roll in the amazing photos. The yard is large and kept very nice with flowers and bushes all around . We were able to fit a large tent that we rented in the yard. Diana was great to work with and was very accommodating and responsive. My family and I are already planning to have a reunion at this beautiful home within the next couple years !

Beautiful property with beautiful view and interesting History.

  • 5 of 5

This property was well maintained, clean and had very interesting information about it's history in the community and the generations of family who lived there.

We enjoyed the antiques, beautiful view, convience of location, information of the area provided, and the size of the house so that family was not on top of each other. Kitchen supplies were good, and plenty of towels were provided. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend the house to anyone.

Fantastic vacation!

  • 4 of 5

Fabulous vacation! House was perfect for our big group and would certainly recommend to friends and family. Owner was very nice and extremely helpful with suggestions and recommendations during our stay. The house had plenty of space to lounge and everyone had a bed. Beds were very comfortable. The back yard was a great place for the kids' evening games of soccer or football. The inlet is beautiful and between kayaks and a paddle board we were able to explore the inlet and venture beyond seeing lots of seals and porpoises. The Island shuttle that stopped right outside the house was fantastic and made traveling to all the spots so much more convenient. Finding parking can be tough, so I absolutely recommend taking the shuttle and having one less worry. Lots and lots of hiking available for climbers of all levels and all within a short distance of the house. We loved the sand beach especially after hiking Beehive Mountain.
