Spectacular mountain views and wooded privacy between Durango and Purgatory Resort. Spacious, comfortable, cozy, private and convenient are just a few of the words that accurately describe this newly constructed, mountain-contemporary home. 

Some vacation homes offer a comfortable respite after the day’s activities and experiences, but Castle Rock Retreat is the kind of house, that to many, becomes part of the experience. This new home offers contemporary mountain decor, providing roomy comfort for up to eight guests with three bedrooms, 2.5 baths, a well-equipped kitchen, multiple decks, welcoming living/dining room with TV, movie library, and games for the family, upstairs loft and home office with TV, and grand mountain views from windows and decks. The home features Starlink WIFI with average internet speeds are around 100mbs which allows for multiple devices to streaming content (the home features Hulu for live TV/Sports).

One of the home’s most unique features is the covered deck with outdoor furniture and gas fireplace, with remarkable views of the Hermosa Cliffs. This home is located within about a seven-minute drive to Purgatory Resort, about 30 minutes from downtown Durango and the Durango Train, and Mesa Verde National Park is a scenic one-hour drive to the Southwest.

Please note that, like most properties in the area, this home does not have AC, as it is uncommon for homes at this elevation. Temperatures inside the property are easily managed by using fans and opening the windows at night when temperatures drop into the 40s.

The mountain view from the kitchen and adjacent bar area, is of Engineer Mountain. One of the area’s iconic peaks, the 12,968 foot mountain is a popular hiking and mountain biking area in summer and passed by all travelers on the famous San Juan Scenic Byway when driving to the town of Silverton and beyond.

Please note there is a security camera outside on the front of the home to monitor snow. It is motion detected and pointed high to see driveway and road. There are no other cameras inside the home. There is no access to the detached garage. The home is not pet friendly so please do not bring your pets.

Amazing place!

The house was absolutely beautiful and comfortable! It’s basically everything we would want in our own mountain home. The host left us some local jam and chocolate from the area which was delicious and greatly appreciated. The road leading up to it sucks but staying in the house was totally worthwhile. It’s about 35 minutes into town. We definitely recommend staying here and would do so ourselves the next time we return. Thanks!

We love the location that is close to many great hikes and day trip to Silverton and Durango.The home was comfortable and the perfect place for our family to relax. We had room for cousins to join us at different points in the trip and they all enjoyed the bunk room and making memories exploring in the backyard. The house had plenty of storage and helpful shoe storage by the front door, mudroom bench with several hooks for the many bags and hats we used on the trip. And one of my favorite touches was Elfa closet in the primary downstairs room. The beds were comfortable and we spent a lot of time on the upstairs covered patio. We have stayed in other homes that just had an open patio but it was too hot / sunny to use in the afternoon. The covered one upstairs was our family's favorite spot in the house to hang out, play games, read books and enjoy the views of Castle Rock. The rental company was very responsive with the view questions and help items that we needed through text.

Loved the location and setup - a bit off the beaten path, some outdoor space for kids to play in the snow, and great mountain views from inside the house. Nice wood fireplace. Would like a better setup for storing skis and boots overnight (eg access to garage). Driving to the house does require 4wd/Awd. Great place and setup for us. Would stay there again.

We stayed here for 2 weeks and had everything we needed. The kitchen was very well stocked. Beds were very comfortable. Everything functioned properly. Very Clean.We had one very small issue with the TV midway through our stay and the property management company was very responsive and help us resolve it quickly.We even had some deer visitors!

These are my recommendations that will make the cabin better: 1) put a TV in the Master Bdrm and on upper deck patio - there is only one TV in the entire cabin 2) better patio furniture - you can't really relax on either deck because furniture is not comfortable. Keith is great! We've rented from him 3 times and each time extremely responsive.

We loved the layout of the property, the quality finishings, the lighting (dimmer switches) and the several seating areas. The beds were comfortable. The home was very well appointed and stocked with all the necessities. This is one of those amazing places that you don't want to leave. My only recommendation is to communicate that the owners request that guests remove shoes... which is totally understandable given the immaculate condition of the property! Just would have been good to know as we would have brought "house footwear". We look forward to returning!

Wonderful Home Directly Across from Purg! Privacy, Views, & Best of Both Worlds

We spent Spring Break 2025 at this beautiful home as 2 adults and two elementary aged kids and it was a lovely stay. The house is in an amazing location where you have the best of both worlds, directly across from Purgatory but nestled in a private neighborhood with beautiful views. The windows throughout the house let in gorgeous natural light. It felt very private the entire time we were there, like you’re in your own private cabin in the woods, with views of the peaks from the back and side of the house. Kitchen is well stocked for everything you need for cooking and serving. Firewood is plenty and stocked. Main patio is awesome right off of the living room. Beds are super comfortable. Just a great place for families or couples. Be advised, a 4 wheel drive vehicle is an absolute necessity, especially during the snow months, even in the Spring. We had to put ours in 4 wheel drive driving into the neighborhood to get to the house almost the entire time we were there in March 2025. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5: As wonderful as our stay was, we were disappointed to find that we could not use the upstairs patio during our entire stay as the outdoor fireplace was Out of Order, Locked. I had inquired about the workability of both fireplaces prior to us arriving and the management company mentioned nothing about the outdoor patio fireplace being out of order and offered nothing to compensate for it, which is unusual, as management knew of the issue prior to our arrival.

My husband and live on an Oklahoma ranch located on dead-end road and our nearest neighbor is a half-mile away. We have a lovely view of the Wichita Mountains and are surrounded by trees on a quiet, secluded creek. Therefore, I am rather particular when I chose to leave our ranch and stay away from home for any length of time. This property checked all my boxes and I held my breath as I booked it. It most certainly did not disappoint! It was secluded, quiet, had gorgeous views of mountains and trees, and was extraordinarily clean for a vacation rental. The furnishings, kitchen appliances, and housewares were high-end and more than adequate for all our needs. The homes is spacious, has a nice lay-out, and boasts two lovely relaxing balconies for enjoying the fresh mountain air. All communication from booking to checking in and checking out was quick and easy. This property is just a short drive approximately 20 miles from Durango in the south and a short lovely drive north will get you to the quaint mountain towns of Silverton and then Ouray for fun shopping and dining. It was just a perfect retreat in every way and I am so glad I booked it.

The location is terrific - up in the mountains, crisp air (10-20 degrees cooler than Durango proper thanks to the elevation), privacy, quiet, serenity. As always with VRC rentals, the house is well stocked with nearly everything you need. The furniture and the beds are comfortable. You feel far away from the world, but you're a 30 minute drive from downtown Durango's restaurants and shops and maybe 20 minutes from the outdoor adventuring and mountain life to be found in Silverton. For skiers, your just across 550 from the entrance to Purgatory. And if all you want to do is stay at home and enjoy views and mountain air, this home is perfect for that too. You're 5 minutes from the Nugget Mountain Bar and a short drive from James Ranch Market & Grill as well as the Olde Schoolhouse for outstanding pizza and beer (really, you need to try this pizza). Also Durango Hot Springs, which has just opened a new, top notch spa. We encourage hikers to do the Castle Rock via Elbert Creek Road Trail hike (see AllTrails), which will put you on top of the cliff you look at from the home's back deck - with binoculars or even the zoom on your iPhone, you can even find the house from the peak of Castle Rock. Beautiful home but ...

This home was beautiful and the area was perfect. We loved so many aspects about it but it had a few issues that should have been addressed. We tried to have them fixed through the management company, but they were not helpful. When we arrived at 6:30 pm, it was very hot in the house. We didn't know if it had air co, but discovered it was turned up to 78, which made the upstairs about 85. We called the management company but agreed to turn the thermostat down and see what would happen the following day. We set the thermostat on 70 and the upstairs eventually cooled down after 2am because the windows were opened. I waited two days and the air co just couldn't cool the house down, especially the upstairs. There was no ventilation in the bunk area and the guest in the upstairs bedroom that had a ceiling fan was very hot and miserable, as well. We both kept the bedroom doors open for ventilation. Again, with the windows open, it cooled down way after midnight, which made it difficult to fall asleep. When it had cooled down outside, we had hoped to use the outside fireplace which is located on the second floor. The instructions in the book said it was challenging to light and we would find the instructions upstairs. We looked for the instructions and could not find them. I called the management company again, about the air co and the fireplace and they said sometimes they do something to the air co to prevent freezing and they did not have notes on the fireplace. They did not send anyone out to check the air co and they did not contact the owners to find out how to turn on the fireplace. I just wonder if the air co could have been a simple freon fix or a simple cleaning of the unit. I realize it was a warmer week in the summer, but I would have been happier if the management would have at least attempted to fix these issues. Other than these issues, it was a wonderful house!
