About this property

Secluded Lakefront, Dog-Friendly Cabin with Canoe, 7 Miles from the Ocean

This newly renovated lakefront cabin is on 2 wooded acres with 250 feet of private frontage on the undeveloped end of quiet Six Mile Lake. It offers excellent swimming and easy shore access for people and dogs, with a canoe for guests to use. The cabin is 600 square feet plus a loft, with large windows and skylights: plenty of natural light regardless of the weather. Situated 10 minutes from the larger town of Machias (pronounced Ma-CHAI-us), the cabin is convenient to a full-service supermarket, several hardware and outdoor supply stores, a handful of restaurants, a hospital with a 24-hour emergency room, and many small businesses. The original cabin was built in 1998 and was very rustic, with no running water or electricity, and recently underwent an extreme makeover. (Please note that all reviews through 2023 refer to the original cabin and not the renovated one). Photos of the original cabin appear toward the end of the photo gallery.

The cabin does not have a television or Internet or exterior lights of any kind in order to preserve the rustic feel and minimize light pollution. It usually receives a decent cell phone signal depending on your carrier, allowing you to use your phone as an Internet hotspot.

Dogs that like to swim really love this property, and the water access is very good. But please note the property is sloped, with many tree roots along the path between the cabin and the water.

The access road and our driveway are gravel, and though they are well-maintained, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is helpful.

For those looking for a quiet, secluded, dark-sky experience on the lake, the property will not disappoint.

Great secluded cabin
Very well appointed and newly remodeled cabin with great seclusion. You see no other cabins or people from the wonderful porch and dock. It is small, but ideal for two (there are two twin beds in the loft, but you need to be very careful climbing the latter). Also, ideal place for our golden retriever! She loved it there, with water to swim and plenty of squirrels to chase. The lake is small and stocked only with trout (which are very difficult to catch in the summer, as they are deep in the middle of the lake). I caught only one small one. However, fantastic bass fishing in nearby lakes. I hired a local guide for fly fishing (Bill Robinson with Denny River Camp -- highly recommended) and caught about two dozen bass each of the two days I fished. Smallmouth bass fishing heaven. Helen's in Machias is an excellent restaurant, but not much more nearby (other than great fishing). One drawback with the cabin is very poor internet (to be expected, however, in such a secured area). We were fine without TV but missed being able to surf the web :). Bring plenty of books to read. Finally, Anne was a terrific host!

Absolutely Perfect
My wife and I can’t say enough about how much we enjoyed our stay at this little cabin in the woods. The freshly renovated cabin felt cozy and had all the necessities to make us feel at home during our week stay. The setting of the cabin is breathtaking with a remote lake about 100 feet from the cabin. We enjoyed swimming, canoeing, and fishing in the lake and didn’t see another person on it during our entire stay. It was the perfect setting for our Maine vacation. Our only regret is not renting it a few more days.

Amazing!! Must see for yourself
All great things to say about this beautiful property. If you are looking for absolute peace and quiet away from people and noise this is the place to be. Cabin is gorgeous and clean. Relaxing on the back deck overlooking the lake was incredible. Perfect trees for a hammock!! We canoed on the lake and had it all to ourselves. It was awesome! Anne is a great host and is very responsive to all communications. 10/10 recommend. We will be back!

Completely amazing camp!
I have zero bad to say about this property. We were the first to stay in this all newly renovated cabin. Everything was so functional and nice! Dishwasher, laundry machines, big shower, etc… Very secluded and great place for a family getaway. The beds were so comfy. There are windows everywhere! 369 view of it all. I’m guessing the price might go up but it’s very worth it! Amenities were all there. Easy place to rest your head with luxury feel deep in the Maine woods.

Wonderfully rustic, private, serene
Everything was absolutely wonderful! Even with the unanticipated well digging at the end of our stay, our overall experience was wonderful and we were impressed that the hosts reimbursed us a portion without hesitation given the inconvenience the well dig caused.

Secluded Cabin
When driving up to the cabin I was happy we had taken our truck! The road in would be rough for a smaller car or one lower to the ground. Once at the cabin it was infact secluded, very quite, and absolutely relaxing. During our stay the weather was not the best. It was cold and rainy so having the wood stove was great to keep the dampness and coolness out of the cabin. The out house was obviously just that. Better in comparison to your other options while camping. Between rain we were able to explore the lake in our canoes with an easy paddle. Also the fishing right off the dock is good too! We caught beatiful brook trout and many catfish! We also did some rock painting to add to the ones around the tree on the deck and in the cabin. Finally, town is not far from the cabin should you need to pick up any supplies. Communication with the owner was easy and super responsive to our questions. Over all I would absolutely book this cabin again for myself and family.

Quiet, convenient, and everything I wanted.
I loved staying at this cabin! I had never been to this part of Maine before staying here. I drove up Route 1 from Portland to the cute little (very small) town of Machias, hooked a right and headed into the woods. The cabin is about a 15 minute drive from town, about 30 minutes from Roque Bluffs state park and also pretty close to hiking in Cutler and the Canadian border in Lubec. The Cabin itself is wonderful. It has a very comfortable queen bed on the main floor and two twin beds in the loft. The oil lamps provided great light and ambiance. The woodburning stove gave me a bit of trouble at first but the owners were very easy to communicate with and I was able to get their help to get everything going. The lake is just down the hill from the cabin and the back-porch has an amazing view. There is no one else around so it gets very very quiet and very dark at night which was a very new experience for a city boy like me. There is only an outhouse, which was odd at first but I got used to it. If you are thinking of staying in a rustic cabin then this is the place!

Great location on the lake. Fishing off the dock was fun. Canoeing in the evening to watch the sunset. Water was warm and refreshing for swimming. We saw eagles flying over the lake. Shooting stars at night. Great cabin to relax and unwind.

Perfection
Great cabin. Camp, outbuildings are land are exceptionally well kept. The little touches like the water bowl on the floor and the welcome mat in the deck made me feel like "they really are dog people!" and were happy to have my dogs join me instead of just tolerating pets at the camp. Close enough to town for a novice camper to feel comfortable, far enough away to really feel like you escaped for a bit.

Excellent off the grid location
We had a fabulous time at the cabin. It was clean and well maintained. The area is so quiet and relaxing. There was plenty of fire wood for us to keep warm as we were there in October. We were very impressed with the cleanliness of the out house. It was roomy and airy and the peat really helped keep the smell down. The kitchen was well equipped and had everything we needed. We would recommend this property to anyone who wants to be off the grid to enjoy a beautiful and quiet vacation.

Late but glowing review
If you pay close attention to all of the highly accurate descriptions of this unique rental, and you're good with the isolated and rustic nature of the camp, you will not be disappointed! We stayed in early July and truly enjoyed the chance to relax and unwind. Upon arrival, there was a bit of confusion about the outhouse, but a quick text message (yes, I had some AT&T service), to Anne resulted in an immediate response and clarification. The property manager had the camp spotlessly cleaned, aired out, and ready for us. The outhouse was not an issue at all. The lake was fantastic - clean, clear, and weed-free near the dock. We brought our own kayak and also used the canoe provided to paddle every day. Literally saw NO ONE in our cove of the lake, aside from the loon, otter, and beaver (?) that paddled by on occasion. I was able to hang my hammock between two trees just behind the deck with the picnic table near the shore and loved curling up after a swim, cocooning inside to avoid the bugs. A small butane-powered bug repellant also helped to keep away the mosquitoes and black flies near the water and on the back porch. The camp is well-appointed - cooking was easy inside in the kitchen and outside on the great little propane grill. The propane-powered refrigerator/freezer was a marvel. If you are looking for a very quiet recharge, you can't go wrong here!

Beautiful location - bring bug spray!
We had a really nice time swimming in the lake, taking the canoe out, and feeding the little fish off the dock. My biggest complaint was that the mosquitos and black flies were really persistent and didn't seem impressed with our attempts to keep them away with bug spray, candles, and a Thermacell. It is Maine in July so maybe that's unavoidable and we were there right after a rainy stretch, so they might not always be as bad as they were for us. But it put a damper on our attempts to enjoy the firepit and dock. We couldn't really just sit outside without constantly swatting them away. The cabin was nicely outfitted with the basics and we were very comfortable. The property is fairly secluded, but is close enough to the town of Machias that you can run to town for groceries or to the laundromat. You can hear the sound of cars and trucks on the road at the cabin, which was a reminder that you weren't that far from civilization. Easy access to countless great hikes within about a 30 minute drive. It was a nice place to spend a week with my family.

About the host

Host profile image
Owners: Anne Golden and Nathan Neorr (rhymes with "more").
Anne is originally from Manchester, Maine, and Nathan is originally from Northern Michigan. Anne taught English as a Second Language at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, for 18 years after spending 3 years teaching English in Japan. Since 2016 she has worked for the Japan America Society of Greater Cincinnati as Executive Director. Nathan is a professional actor (stage, film, television, and radio) and carpenter. They live in Cincinnati with Sunnie, a Bernese Mountain Dog born in November 2023. They spend several weeks at their cabin each year and enjoy sharing it with like-minded people who appreciate Maine's beautiful and remote landscapes.

Why they chose this property

The North Coast region of Maine is often overlooked because it is remote and not as developed as other coastal areas to the south. We consider the area's remoteness a plus. There is very little traffic, noise, air or light pollution, and yet the region still offers everything one really needs in terms of supplies and essential services. Our end of the lake is quiet and relatively undeveloped. The use of powerboats on the lake is restricted, so it's very good for canoeing and kayaking. The fishing can be good in the spring and early summer.

What makes this property unique

The cabin is very private and is located at the north end of Six Mile Lake in the town of Marshfield, Maine, approximately 10 minutes from Machias (pop. 2,500). When you're there, you will see very few people outside of occasional kayakers. It's quiet and clean, completely free of air and light pollution. The star gazing is excellent.

There is excellent hiking along wooded, coastal trails approximately 30 minutes north of the cabin. This area is known as the "Bold Coast." It's relatively undeveloped and uncrowded, even in peak summer months. You can download a free map from a local non-profit organization (see address below).
