This is the perfect location for an exotic honeymoon, a bird watching tour, a yoga retreat or a playful base for an unforgettable family vacation. Leave the real world behind and let your inner child emerge.
The home is in Cabo Matapalo, on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. With continuous rainforest connecting to the famous Corcovado National Park, the wildlife viewing is unrivalled. Monkeys and macaws are daily visitors. The home is open plan with only walls where necessary to provide privacy. The main platform comprises the kitchen, dining area, relaxing areas and two en-suite bedrooms. The upper level comprises the master suite and en-suite shower room. In the garden there are two connected dipping pools and up behind the house in the primary forest there is a private yoga deck with a view over to the ocean. Choose your favourite corner and catch up with a good book, interrupted only by passing monkeys, macaws and butterflies.
The kitchen is designed with cooks in mind but space for helpers too! The kitchenware is of good quality and is regularly updated. The custom storage rack reduces the chore of washing up, just place items in their rack and they will dry for next time, minimum hassle. The gas stove has 6 large burners and a large oven. There are 3 sinks, 2 together and 1 on the island bar where smoothie or cocktail preparation is a breeze with a blender all set to go. The upper master has a king bed and large shower room and a private toilet. The junior suite on the main floor has a private deck, king bed and shower room and private toilet. The family suite has screened windows with a shower room and private toilet. This can be set up as a third king bedroom or a king with 2 additional beds, or can be a bunk room with beds for 6. All the beds have cotton sheets and high quality mosquito nets. Fall asleep to the sound of the surf knowing you are in the most comfortable beds in the area!
At Casa Vida Verde it is hard to know where the interior ends and the exterior begins! The viewing deck is the perfect spot to watch the jungle wake up each morning and birds and butterflies starting their day in the golden dawn light. Steps take you down through the grounds which gently transition from the forest to garden and lead to the pool area. The organic design of the house is evident here too with a fun, funky combination of two dipping pools connected by a channel and a small waterfall surrounded by lush tropical foliage and flowers. Relax here in the shade or sun, or this private setting is also a serene setting for yoga. Poolside, you will find a bistro table and chairs, a BBQ and an outdoor shower. Much of our property is actually primary forest behind the house. Explore this area using the well-tended trail of steps and spend some time up at the large platform with a view to the ocean. This is the perfect spot for yoga, massage or bird and wildlife watching.
WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE? Temperatures average mid-80s during the daytime and fall to the mid-70s at night. The coastal waters are a constant 74 degrees all year long. There are two seasons: the Dry (December through April) which is less humid and there is less rain, and the Green (May through November) when there is more rain usually in the afternoons and at night. October and early November are the rainiest months. WHAT ABOUT BUGS? There are many insects around but most insect encounters are part of the wonder of being in the rainforest. Remember, there is a whole food chain out there and there are plenty of animals and birds intent on eating all insects found. However, it is a good precaution to have insect repellent, particularly in the early evenings. If you are very concerned about the possibility of insects being around you, it is possible the open air living at Casa Vida Verde is not the best environment for you. CAN YOU DRINK THE WATER? Yes! Our water comes from a natural spring or well, depending on the time of year, and is safe to drink. IS THERE HELP NEARBY? Our managers, Carlos and Sianne, live on site with their two children. Both speak English well and are there to ensure that your stay is as enjoyable as possible. They know the area very well and are very experienced hosts. Our guests report that nothing is too much trouble for them. DO WE NEED TO RENT A CAR? No, you do not need to. If you are happy to walk locally, we recommend you getting a taxi to other locations. The taxi drivers know the area well, will often spot animals and birds that you would miss and can look after the driving while you enjoy your surroundings. However, if you prefer to have your own vehicle this can be sorted with pick up and drop off in San Jose or Puerto Jimenez. CAN WE USE ELECTRONICS? Yes, please bring your own cameras, cell phones and laptops and iPod/iPads. Purchase a local SIM card at the airport in San Jose, we do have reception in Cabo Matapalo. Also, we have wireless internet. However, although it is reliable, it can fail and you may need to visit Puerto Jimenez to connect if the need is urgent. We have an iPod player if you wish to bring your own music. Please don’t bring hairdryers or curling irons, as these use too much power. You will not miss them, in the jungle you don’t have to worry about what your hair looks like! The outlets are standard North American for 110V applications. WHAT IS PROVIDED? We provide all linens, towels (including beach towels), kitchen towels and toilet paper, biodegradable shampoo, conditioner and shower gel, liquid soap, dish detergent, and other staples for the kitchen. We also have some games and books together with information cards on the flora and fauna of the area. Some herbs for cooking are grown on site and there is also a variety of fruit trees. Carlos will supply you with these as available.

Amazing House with Incredible Garden in Paradise
Perfect for a family vacation or friends vacation. Excellent attention received from the caretaker of the house who is nearby. Had an amazing time, would rent again!!
Thank you so much and great to know you enjoy visiting us!
We look forward to seeing you again!
Perfect house for family vacation!
There have obviously been many well-deserved stellar reviews of this property, and despite that, our expectations were still exceeded. Carlos, the normal caretaker, was on vacation during our stay, but Roberto stayed on the property while we were there and was extremely attentive and genuinely cared about our time at the property being enjoyable and that things went smoothly for us. Yes, the house is remote, but that's what we were looking for. The wildlife around the house is was as good as advertised by other reviewers. From the house, we saw monkeys, macaws and other birds daily. We also saw toucans, a sloth, cotimundi, agouti and pavones grande, as well as various lizards and toads, at or right around the house. One of the best parts of the location being generally remote is that just walking along mata palo "road" to go to one of the beaches or hike to king louis waterfall -- all fairly short walks -- you are likely to see more wildlife all around.
The house itself is well-appointed, and I couldn't think of anything I would have expected it to have that it didn't. Maybe ceiling fans over the beds would have been nice, but minor gripe. The internet worked great for us (as long as you're not expecting to stream movies or anything) and the kitchen had everything you would expect. We made arrangements to have Irma cook for our family each night we were there, which I would highly recommend -- great food, and very convenient. We did not end up renting a car, which was a blessing in disguise because Heidy (our taxi driver) was an absolute pleasure to get to know and was there whenever we needed her. If you end up taking many trips up to Puerto Jiminez for activities and such, then it can get a little expensive, but at the end of the day it was worth it for us. Aside from going back and forth to Puerto Jiminez multiple times or perhaps making a trip or two to Martina's, I really don't think you need a car at the property.
As for the beaches, we knew from doing our research not to expect a lot from them. They are generally not gentle, sandy beaches, although we found backwash bay (maybe 10-15 min walk from the house) to be pretty nice at high tide and good for the kids (ages 8 and 5) to swim at. Otherwise, the beaches right around the house are a mixture of sand and stones/rock. Fortunately, the swell happened to be very light, so we were still able to take paddleboards out right from matapalo beach. Overall -- excellent place!
We are glad to know you enjoyed Casa Vida Verde and we loved having you stay with us.
Thanks for taking the time to write this review and the reccomendations.
Hopefully you will have the time to visit us again in a near future.
Even more than I expected. Carlos is great!
Eco-Chic ~ Gaudi Inspired ~ Jungle and Beach!
Casa Vida Verde truly lives up to its name. The “Green Life” is omnipresent from its green cob construction, to its siting nestled in the jungle, with minimal disruption. No clear cutting here. Casa Vida Verde is surrounded by the jungle.
The architecture is a Gaudi inspired design that has open concept common areas. Pathways lead to common gathering spots on the property, including an open air patio next the house, which we used nightly for star gazing, a palapa and the pool area. The pool area is shaded with large sailcloth, providing a much needed escape from the intense mid-day sun. From the house we observed 3 types of monkeys, toucans, macaws, anteaters, lizards, oodles of birds, bugs and other critters!
The bedrooms are well appointed with crisp white sheets, nice mattresses and good pillows. The bathrooms are simply beautiful with large walk-in showers. The open concept allows for animal viewing opportunities from most rooms. A pool is simply mandatory for my kids, as the sun is too intense to be at the beach mid-day.
The location is primo, privately nestled in the jungle and a quick walk to Matapalo Beach. No other rentals properties are in sight, providing a private oasis. The owners did very minimal clearing when constructing the house. This keeps the jungle and all its critters closely. We saw capuchin and spiders monkeys every morning while enjoying breakfast and coffee on the balcony. We saw scarlet macaws and toucans on the property as well. The property has a system of gravel paths that meander about the property, providing mini sanctuary to view all the critters. There is also a large platform at the top of the property to enjoy viewing animal and birds, or do yoga.
The caretakers are truly exceptional. Carlos is fluent in English and very bright. The caretakers do have a guard dog that lives at their house next door. The dog quickly got to know us, and only barked if a stranger walked near. We would walk up the driveway at night he never barked at us, as he knew we belonged. This made us feel safe.
Cabo Matapalo was a very memorable vacation destination for our family. The animal viewing was amazing. The Osa Peninsula provided an unparalleled opportunity to observe so much bio-diversity in one incredibly beautiful place. My family got to climb waterfalls, observe 3 types of monkeys, toucans, macaws, lizards, oodles of birds, bugs and other critters. Casa Vida Verde provided a luxurious rustic chic home for 7 nights.
Flintsone house is pretty cool!
There were only 4 of us-parents and 11 and 13 year old.Second trip to CR but first to Osa.
We booked Irma to cook our lunches and dinners and were thrilled we did. Basic but tasty food and she cleaned up which is key with no dishwasher. GREAT NEWS-house just got an American style fridge and freezer so ice is readily available. Now if there were ice trays!
I understood we were remote but did not fully get it until we arrived. The sounds of the jungle were pretty scary our first night. DS slept w DH and I slept with DD! Beds comfy and linen changed every other day. You will always be in a state of damp, including pillows, but that is ok.
We did our boat trip out of PJ on 5th day so we then replenished groceries. Nature is right in front of you. Plantings and flowers at house were spectacular and encouraged birds and lizards. Monkeys overhead on the monkey trail. So so lush.
Weather was good-rained for a bit around 5pm and then it cooled down. Hottest time was morning and then sun came out w breezes. Pool was a necessity. Beaches were lovely but high tide was during day so couldn't really swim-too rough or undertows.
Saw a tayra (a medium sized black cat), macaws and 3 types of monkeys, lizards, frogs, birds, agoutis, toads right at house. Is on monkey trail so tons of monkeys. Once we got used to noises at night we were ok. Nothing but a frog and lizard came into house.
Solar much easier than expected-candlelight is lovely anyway. Kids loved the swings - was a house constructed with whims of owners kids and it showed. Wifi worked but was weak.
Caretakers extraordinaire, Carlos and Sianne-live right near house so a shout of Carlos was all that was needed, House kept clean, linens and towels changed. Their dog is a German shepherd who patrols at night. We asked for him to be leashed during day.
Carlos was so much fun. He took us to beaches to show us entrances and to Carbonara waterfall. He took out his telescope twice and we saw Saturn and various stars. We had some great conversations and he joined us for our last dinner. HIs wife, Sianne, gives amazing massages. Cold stones, aromatherapy and a bit of Chinese medicine.
Was scared week would be too long but it was fine. Once we got used to sounds of howlers and spider monkeys (which were pretty scary at night) all was good and we slept well.
Hello there! We are so glad that we met most of your expectations and are also thankful for your visit and for understanding the different challenges we face here day by day to maintain the house suitable for visitors who may think what to expect but not quite. We appreciate a lot your review and will continue working on improving the house with all these useful comments you left us. We sure hope to have you back sometime soon in the future. All the best!
A unique vacation rental. Rating closer to 4.5
Loved this place! Carlos and Sianne were attentive but unobtrusive. What kept this from a 5 star rating were small things that are easily fixable: a grill that works, a stove that didn't require matches to light, and perhaps an update to the description so that guests bring their own toiletries as we relied on what was written and didn't. One last thing: suggest that Carlos educate guests about his dog being a guard dog, not a pet, especially with children who might not understand the difference.
Thank you very much for taking the time to give us a review. we appreciate the feedback and your visit. we hope to see you around in the future.
Other Activities: Yoga platform, 3 great surfing spots, waterfall & tree repelling, nature hikes, kayak or local fishing, skywatching, etc. Perfect combination of beach and wildlife where nature meets the Ocean. The area offers great Yoga and massage.
