BEST VILLA IN THE AREA WITH NEW POOL! RECENTLY PUBLISHED IN ITALIAN INTERIOR DECORATOR'S MAGAZINE! GREAT SERVICE AND AMERICAN OWNER AVAILABLE TO ASSIST YOU WITH LOCAL ADVICE AND TIPS!! LOOK NO FURTHER!!!

Villa Maggiano is located in Maggiano, a small hillside fraction of La Spezia that dominates the city and it’s beautiful gulf. Surrounded by olive groves, this typical Ligurian farmhouse is the result of a two year restoration process where the owners have maintained all of the homes original features. During the restoration process they slowly discovered wood beams, stone walls and brick archways which had been covered by years of plaster and paint. These original features have now become one of the property’s highlights along with it’s beautiful views of the Poets Gulf from almost every window. A beautiful pool was just installed in Spring of 2013 making the property even more exclusive and we are continuously making upgrades to the property.

From the villa's spacious terrace and manicured garden, guests may enter directly into the ground floor. Upon entering the ground floor to the left is a spacious living room that has two large sofas and a flat screen television with some satellite channels including BBC. Just beside the living room is the dining area which is furnished with an antique table and seats up to 8 guests. To the right of the dining room is the delightful country style kitchen which is fully equipped with a dishwasher,a professional gas stove top and electric oven, microwave, toaster, coffee maker and a small cantina.

From the dining room the staircase leads guests up to the first floor which can also be reached directly through the villas front door. The first floor is composed of two bedrooms and one bathroom. One of the bedrooms has a king size bed (1.80x1.90 cm) and the second bedroom has two singles which can be made together upon request. From all of the beds there is a wonderful sea view. The spacious bathroom on this floor has a double vanity and a spacious shower.

The second floor of the villa is composed of two bedrooms each with their own spacious ensuite bathrooms. The “master suite” is very large and has a king size bed from which guests can enjoy a beautiful sea view. The master suite’s bathroom has a characteristic Victorian style tub with a hand held shower. From the fourth bedroom , guests will still enjoy a sea view from the king size bed and the ensuite bathroom has a double vanity and a spacious shower.

Just outside of the villa's front door is the entrance to the separate laundry room which has been furnished with a large washing machine, a dryer, an ironing board/iron, a linen closet and an antique marble sink.

The outdoor area patio area has been furnished with a large stone table that seats up to 12 people and stone benches with colorful cushions to relax outdoors and we have just finished a wonderful gazebo in 2016 for shade and dining al fresco in the summer evenings.

The owners have used many precious antiques along with high quality materials like oak floors, travertine, and handmade tiles to create a comfortable country atmosphere with all of today’s modern comforts. The villa has wireless internet throughout. There is also an herb garden for those who enjoy cooking and cooking classes can be arranged directly at the villa upon request.

Just beside the villa, is an antique pathway, that either leads down to La Spezia or farther up the hills with different points of interest such as the grotta of Bocca Lupara and nice hikes for some good exercise with a view!

The actual towns of the CinqueTerre may be reached from the villa either by car, by ferry, or by train. The train station in La Spezia is only a five minute drive from the villa and trains depart almost every hour for the CinqueTerre. The ferry dock is also only about 10 minutes from the villa and is probably the most panoramic alternative.

Although the CinqueTerre towns are better known, also the towns of Portovenere, Lerici, Fiascherino, and Montemarcello are of the beaten path and all well worth visiting and within 20-30 minutes by car from the villa. Lucca, Florence, and Pisa are also all easy day trips. Many guests also enjoy taking a trip to the Carrara marble quarries and discovering the mountains which are less than one hour from the villa.

The owner has been catering to foreign travelers for over 10 years and has an extra touch at acknowledging some of the seemingly small details that make ALOT of difference when traveling away from home. She takes extra care in providing a house book full of local information and activities and is always available for any special requests such as cooking courses at the villa, meals prepared at the villa by a local cook, and an American tour guide specialized in the local CinqueTerre pathways, local museums, and art cities.

Notes: For those reserving Villa Maggiano, the city of La Spezia requires a tourist tax of €1.5/per day per person max. 5 days which will be collected on arrival day and consigned to local authorities. A copy of your passport is also required at check in and final cleaning costs of 180 euros will be collected upon arrival.

About Sarah Ferrari

My name is Sarah Ferrari and I have been living in Italy for over 18 years. 'I found my love in Portofino'....my husband Franco, from La Spezia almost 15 years ago. I was so lucky to move to this beautiful area of Italy which offers so many alternatives for an outdoorsey like myself. Villa Maggiano has been in my husband's family for over one hundred years believe it or not!! We have just finished restoring the property after two years of hard work. We truly put our heart and soul into the project and think that guests will appreciate our efforts in creating a comfortable homey atmosphere for a memorable Italian vacation!!

Sarah Ferrari purchased this villa in 1800

Why Sarah Ferrari chose Liguria

Seeing the villa perched on the hillside with it's wonderful views, we felt like we had to restore it into a vacation spot for others to enjoy. We love our city and it's surroundings and felt like this was the perfect place to fully enjoy what it has to offer.

What makes this villa unique

The villa is perched amongst olive groves in a peaceful atmosphere with amazing sea views from every window yet close to many points of interest such as CinqueTerre, Portovenere, Lerici, Lucca, Portofino and Pisa. Guests will enjoy living the truly Italian lifestyle in this wonderful villa yet they will be able to enjoy daily outings hiking, biking, swimming or just enjoying the scenery!!

Wonderful Family Week, three generations

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely wonderful week in Villa Maggiano Celebrating my mothers 70th in August.

It was a perfect base for exploring the surrounding Portovenere and Cinque Terre, and with small children we also ended up spending many days poolside in the villa, enjoying the view and popping down to the local shops for bread, meats, cheese and wine.

The villa was perfect for eight people, the pool is large and well kept, the view is stunning and the outside area has a large dining table as well as lounge areas with comfortable seating, this is where we spent most of our time. Sarah was very helpful with recommending cooking courses, boat trips etc and was easy to get hold of. You need a car when you stay here but the trip down to La Spezia is very short.

The house itself has great character, it really adds to teh exoerience that you are staying in an authentic Italian villa, we had a great time and would love to be back.

An outstanding villa with all conveniences; amazing views and fully equipped

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Villa Maggiano was an experience to be treasured. From arrival and reception, Sarah was incredible and made us feel as though we were family. The place was spotless and the beauty of the area incredible. It is a 4 bedroomed 8 sleeper home with two bathrooms en suite and one to share on the middle floor. The kitchen was well equipped for every need and the patio and pool were our base for most of the days and evenings. A gorgeous huge infinity pool, lovely lawn and loungers and the wildness of the surrounding hillside made it that much more special. Gusts facilities, guide books and pamphlets as well as restaurant and visiting suggestions rounded off a beautiful time. It was a wonderful base to explore La Spezia and the Cinque Terre and returning to the Villa was an experience to be savoured every time we wandered through these beautiful towns and locality. There is little to say that would in anyway detract from this wonderful experience and it is fully and heartily endorsed as a destination of choice.

Magnificent Villa

  • 5 of 5

My husband, 7 year old daughter and I just returned from a 2 week trip to Italy, with the final week being spent in the gorgeous Villa Maggiano. The house and the views are drop dead gorgeous and it has all the charm you would expect of a country villa plus a number of well thought out amenities, including an infinity pool that overlooks the port of La Spezia. Here is the practical breakdown:

The location is a great home base to visit many areas from Portovenere, the Cinque Terre, Portofino and even as far as Florence. For foodies there are options that are short drive away that we enjoyed greatly, including markets and local restaurant options. Having spent the previous week in 2 other rentals, I really appreciated the layout and equipment of the kitchen. The house is solid and well appointed. The electrical, water and wifi are very modern and very much appreciated for those who technology is important. Two or possibly three of the bedrooms had king sized beds and the sheets and pillows were all of good quality. The views are the real star here - I took more pictures of the house and the views than anything else on our whole trip.

The owner was very helpful with recommendations for food and trips, and helped us set up an amazing private cruise in the Ligurian Sea. She was attentive and we honestly felt that she was concerned that we enjoy our stay. She's a native English speaker so communication for us was easy.

I read the review of the guests who stayed right before us and feel that I should share some opinions there as well. They complained of insects and an uncared and out of date house. Yes, there are insects. But you're out in the country surrounded by an olive grove and nature. In the entire week there we saw a few spiders, but nothing that would not be normal in any place in a location like this. We kept the doors and windows open for the great breezes (although all bedrooms had air conditioners) so we did get the occasional fly, mosquito or wasp. But again, nothing unusual or unexpected about this. I would recommend that if you are a insectiphobe, that in general you should not be looking at a country villa. We did not find anything to be outdated or run down.

A few tips:

Rent a car. You could do this without a car, but it would be a lot more difficult.

There are 3 stories so it may not be great for very small children or elderly.

I highly recommend this as a vacation rental and would, and likely will, stay there again.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking your time to leave this nice review. Villa Maggiano dates back to the mid 1800's and I make my best efforts to ensure that guests enjoy their stay and that the villa is always in top shape for every arrival. It is really important for me that people feel at home and go back with great memories. I really hope to have you all back in the near future!!!
