The Bird Cage - Waikiki Hideaway, Steps to the Beach

Bedrooms Studio
Space 325 sq ft
Property type condo
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Condo, Studio, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 1-2)

The Bird Cage is a breezy and bright studio giving you clear views of the Koolau Mountains. With historic Waikiki Beach just outside the hotel lobby, the Bird Cage is the perfect home base for exploring Honolulu and the rest of Oahu.

Double paned sliding glass windows greatly minimize the urban sounds of Waikiki, but let a lot of light in. An expansive roof deck on top of the hotel provides a bird's eye view of Diamond Head. There are lounge chairs for sunbathing and tables for alfresco dining. No one else in Waikiki has a better view of the sun setting into the Pacific. Kapiolani Park is just across the street and offers the Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki Aquarium, the Royal Hawaiian Bandstand, tennis courts, soccer fields, archery ranges, weekend art shows and the city's Sunset on the Beach free concerts and movies - all this in its 500 green acres.

One of the main reasons for coming to Hawaii is of course the sun and sand. Surfing, stand up board paddling, outrigger canoeing, swimming and simply lounging on the beach are all just a few steps from the Brid Cage.

Hawaii is the crossroads of the Pacific and its culinary offerings reflect that abundantly, so while the Bird Cage has a kitchen and microwave, you are a short walk away from countless cafes and restaurants catering to every taste and price range. Similarly, if you can get yourself out of the water and away from the beach there is a lot of shopping to be done in Waikiki, and the many other shopping venues just a short drive away.

The Bird Cage is at the end of Waikiki. Kapahulu Avenue provides easy access to the freeway, and makes getting in and out of the area very easy because you avoid all the traffic in the heart of Waikiki. This is perfect for when you decide to explore the rest that Oahu has to offer.

About Kevin Lum

Born and raised in Honolulu, I currently live on the Mainland, but spend a lot of time in Hawaii. I have worked in the travel industry for over 35 years and have explored numerous countries around the world. I can relate to what travelers are looking for in a vacation rental because I'm looking for the same things - cleanliness, location and value.

Kevin Lum purchased this condo in 2003

Why Kevin Lum chose Waikiki

I grew up in Honolulu and spent a lot of time playing at the beach and on the sea wall that is less than 30 steps from the condo. Kapiolani Park was a place for family gatherings, concerts at the Shell, and of course the Zoo. Waikiki was a lot slower and quieter when I was a kid, but even today I think visitors will still find it to be a special place. If you walk down to the Diamond Head end of Kalakaua Avenue - it's still like it was in the old days.

What makes this condo unique

While being at the 'end' of Waikiki might sound like you are away from all the action, that just isn't the case. Everything Waikiki has to offer is just a short walk away, but you don't have to be in the middle of the hustle and traffic. Being on the end of Waikiki makes getting in and out of the area, if you are driving, much easier than visitors staying in the middle of the high-rises. Saving the best for last, being on the end of Waikiki means there is nothing else between you and Diamond Head except the big green expanse of Kapiolani Park. Head up to the roof deck and see for yourself! In the morning it's an amazing place to have coffee, watch the sun peek over the Koolau Mountains and light up Diamond Head, listen to the monkeys in the Zoo, and see the elephants out for a stroll. Only in Hawaii!

Guestbook comments from the manager

Kevin's place was sparkling clean, the bed was comfortable and all the basics were provided for us. Upstairs from hula's, a great LGBTQ friendly bar which my partner and I enjoyed! Great proximity to the beach and all the local attractions. Would absolutely recommend and would stay again.

Convenient location, cozy

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I came here for our honeymoon, and we were very happy with our stay! It was only a block away from the beach and down the street from the fun shops and restaurants. The birdcage was really in the perfect location, and Waikiki is the place to stay (the weather was better here too)! Parking was also very convenient (which is NOT the case elsewhere in Waikiki!) - we ended up parking right across the street in the Zoo parking lot for only $1/hr, between driving around the island (so it was totally worth it). We had breakfast on the rooftop deck, which had a great view of the beach and Diamond Head (and the flamingos in the zoo!). The place was small, cozy, clean, and comfortable. Not a lot of room to cook if you want to do that, but we ate at the yummy restaurants nearby and didn’t need it. We would definitely want to stay here again!

It was great! Very close to everything, there were several accommodations that come with the room. Even tho the room is not part of the hotel, they were very friendly and helped with any questions!

Great place to stay

  • 4 of 5

The Birdcage has everything you need for a holiday in Hawaii. Nicely furnished and adequately equipped, it’s situated at what I would call the quiet end of Waikiki, near the zoo; a place itself that is well worth a visit. And it’s on a road that has very easy access to many bus routes.

We really enjoyed our stay there. It was our first visit to Hawaii. Staying at the Birdcage gave us the opportunity to visit such places as the Rainbow Drive In and Leonard’s; they are both an easy and pleasant walk from the Waikiki Grand. And the beach is so close it’s almost on the doorstep.

Much has been said by others of the view of Diamond Head from the 10th floor. And it’s all true; the view is fantastic.

We’d love to return to Hawaii. And if we did we’d be more than happy to stay at the Birdcage.

Owner's Response: One of the best things about the Bird Cage is its location. Steps from the beach, and a short walk from the center of things - however it's nice hear that you discovered it's on the "quiet" end of Waikiki, which is perhaps the best part of all. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed yourselves while on Oahu, and it sounds as if you took full advantage of your time in Hawaii. Thank you for coming to stay at the Bird Cage, and we look forward to having stay with us again the next time you come to the Islands!

A very nice stay

  • 3 of 5

The Bird Cage is adequate for all your needs. The apartment was very clean and the bed was comfortable. We love the location, away from all the hustle and business of Waikiki. The views of Diamond Head from the 10th floor are spectacular. The location is convenient for food, beaches, buses. It is not a luxury accommodation, but then again we did not pay luxury prices. Kevin provided excellent detailed instructions and information regarding the property and it’s surroundings. Mahalo!

Owner's Response: One of the best things about the Bird Cage is its location on the quiet end of Waikiki. We work hard to provide guests with a rental that is welcoming, clean and a good value. It's always gratifying to hear people agree we're doing a good job. Thanks for coming to stay with us, and if your travels bring you back to the Islands, we hope to see you again! Mahalo!
