About Cara or Bud
Bud Johnson and Friends are the owners of Terlingua House. Bud lives on a ranch just outside of Bronte, Texas (between San Angelo and Abilene). He is a geologist by trade and also dabbles as an entrepreneur.
Cara or Bud purchased this House in 2003
Why Cara or Bud chose Terlingua
I fell in love with the area and then the property back in the 80's and it has been a labor of love to get it to the high standard that it is today. There's something almost magical or spiritual when you watch the sunrise and sunset from here - not to mention the star gazing on a clear night. There's nothing like it. Terlingua House is a deluxe property on 15 acres with spectacular views, easy access, all the amenities and plenty of water. Both water and access can be an issue in the area. It's the perfect place to get away from it all and experience an amazing part of Texas that many don't even know exist. It's just minutes from shopping, dining and tour outfitters and easy access for day trips. Plus, you're fully connected to the outside world here with Internet and satellite TV.
What makes this House unique
Unique, lodge-like adobe style buildings house 3 separate sleeping quarters and kitchen/dining area. It's like renting a lodge or small resort for the same price as a decent hotel room. This allows you to socialize, dine and entertain as a group with the added benefit of retreating to your own space for some quiet time. Just minutes from shopping and dining, it's a perfect place to get away from it all but still be connected with wireless Internet, satellite TV other comforts of home. The sunsets/sunrises and star gazing are spectacular from this property.

Great veiws of the beautiful area from this house.
Nice, gorgeous view of the Big Bend Mountain range where we loved watching for wildlife right from our own driveway. There was an unconventional floor layout, but in the end, it provided great privacy for the 3 couple staying there. The kitchen was well furnished and liked having 2 washer dryer sets. Wish the bath between the two rooms was more traditional construction. Seems the unfinished rooftop allowed for a lot of bugs in that bathroom only. The rooftop viewing deck, was small, at least for the 6 of us at one time.... more of an observation tower than we had anticipated. A/C worked great! One great additional would be lounge chairs so we could comfortably laid back to star gaze.
Great for girls trip!
Everything was perfect except the bathroom that is accessible from outside should also have a code lock on it. A little creepy going in it at night wondering if someone may have snuck in there from off the highway near by.
The Terlingua guest house was amazing in every way! The house was large enough where our group could split up if some wanted to get to bed early and others wanted to stay up late, enjoying the stars and fire pit, but also cozy and accommodating for a group dinner in the kitchen! My favorite part of the house was the second story patio; perfect for a glass of wine while watching the sunset and equally beautiful with a cup of coffee before making the short drive out to the national park for some hiking. The house is close enough to conveniences (Starlight Theatre, liquor store) but still secluded. The ONLY thing that could make this house any closer to perfection would be a hot tub, but I’m sure in the desert that would not be an easy feat. Next time out west I will DEFINITELY stay at Terlingua House. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
Great family place
Very spacious and great location.
Everything was just great. Kitchen is well stocked, and the whole place has a very nice layout. We were a group of four adults and five children, but could easily have fit another small family. Close to town and to the park.
This is the perfect place to stay for easy access to Terlingua and Big Bend National Park! Great kitchen and facilities, comfortable beds and fantastic views. 3 of our party got to watch Big Horn Sheep on the cliff across from the house one evening. The star facing was fantastic from the 2nd floor deck and picnic area. Would definitely stay there again!
