About the property

Unobstructed views, rolling lawns, huge kitchen, sleeps 16 + spare beds.

Buralla guests come back. From their reviews they tell us of the warm welcome and the great time they have. Buralla sits in a superb hill-top location with stunning view. The facilities are modern - air-conditioned bedrooms, huge kitchen, en-suite bathrooms, wifi, satellite TV (including Sky Sport). Outside are beautifully kept lawns, flowerbeds and borders, volleyball/badminton court, soccer pitch and bocce courts, secluded swimming pool, olive groves - all surrounded by unforgettable 360 degree views .

Florence, Pisa, beaches, vineyards, music festivals, golf courses, mountains are in easy reach. But Buralla's views and comforts are such that some guests arrive and pretty much stay put.

Buralla is unusually spacious for Italy - full size bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms, massive modern kitchen, extensive lush lawns - and ideal for groups of friends, families and reunions.

An option is to have the chef shop and prepare meals from her Tuscan menu. A great time and money saver. Plus you are sure of a view while you eat.

Lucca: The walled city of Lucca, only 15 minutes from Buralla, is one of the most beautiful places in Tuscany. Big enough to have everything, yet small enough to cover easily and safely on foot or by rented bicycle. For a rooftop view of Lucca, stroll around the 4km city walls. Or cut through the middle on the car-free Via Filiunga. On this street alone you will sample the very best of Tuscan life: visit beautiful San Michele and San Frediano Churches; climb the Guinigi Tower and Torre delle Ore; pause for a restorative coffee or meal in the elliptical Amfiteatro; shop at any number of beautiful outlets; drop into the residence of Giacomo Puccini, and listen to a short evening recital at San Giovanni Basilica or the Opera house. Tosca, Madame Butterfly and many other of Puccini's works are performed in the summer festival at Torre del Lago which is nearby on the Mediterranean coast.

Active life around Lucca: Look out of Buralla's windows and ask youself 'what do I want to do today?' You have 360 degree views and the choice is yours. Within easy walking distance you can visit the renaissance palace at the bottom of the estate. You could stroll through the vineyards and olive groves into the Pizzorne hills on one of the marked trails. You could drive to the beaches of Versilia and Forte dei Marmi overlooked by the spectacular Alpi Apuane which provide the world famous marble from nearby Carrara. Visit the little hill top village of Montecarlo, to taste wine at the excellent enoteca.

To the north of Lucca the Garfagnana valley presents yet another typology - dense forests, hill top towns like Barga and Castelnuovo.

About Simon and Claudia

That little photo is me playing olive harvest supervisor during the All Saints school holiday at the beginning of November. My Italian wife and I love escaping bleak northern Europe with two or three families that week. We issue buckets, nets and ladders to the kids - who spend many happy hours up the olive trees - while we concentrate on the important things: taking in the views, lazy lunching, nattering away, poking the coals on the BBQ, strolling to a local vineyard. Very restorative.

Simon and Claudia purchased this villa in 2003

Why Simon and Claudia chose Lucca Province

We saw a ruin on a hill while looking for a holiday home away from London's bustle. It was much too big for us, but the views led us to take the plunge, and after 10 years of renting, we are happy to have had so many happy visitors saying they would have done the same!

What makes this villa unique

Friends and family groups and reunions. The setting is exceptional but what sets Buralla apart is being able to comfortably cater for every generation's needs and for no-one to feel hard done by. For example the downstairs suite, and level floors and accesses are great for the less mobile; on the other hand, there's a playroom next to the huge kitchen so parents can keep an eye on little ones if necessary while entertaining around the bar.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had really good time at Buralla - beautiful house, beautiful location, everything perfect. Matteo's dinners were exceptional - bravisssimo! He was very attentive and professional and both dinners were exquisite.

(Original Italian: Ci siamo trovati veramente bene a Buralla - casa stupenda, location bellissima, tutto perfetto. Le cene con Matteo sono state eccezionali - lui e' stato bravisssimo, molto attento e professionale e entrambi le cene erano squisite.)

The unique thing about Buralla is its combination of 360 degree Tuscan views outside, with the space and comfort inside you normally only find in more northern countries. Especially the kitchen, which is a wonderful gathering point. It also has huge garden with space both for quiet zones and the more athletic such as the volleyball court. Something all ages enjoy is the bocce court (Italian bowls) which is wonderful to play at sunset.

It was amazing, Truly magical experience

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time at Buralla and it did not disappoint. This is such an amazing property, the house, the grounds, the pool, everything was perfect. We had friends fly in from all over, some who had never been out of the U.S. and they had such a relaxing stay. Big bonus, we had Simonetta cook for us every night we were there. We ate like Kings and Queens. She is an amazing woman with such a big heart, oh and did I mention the meals she prepared were spectacular!!! In summary best two weeks we have had in a while and would recommend this wonderful home to anyone.

Perfect spot for a family

  • 5 of 5

We were a family of 10 ranging from age 72 to age 5. We had a ball. The kids loved the pool. Simonetta is a cook, available as needed, she made our stay even better. Her food was superb, her price was reasonable, and Simonetta and her husband were pleasant to have around.

The villa is in a great location, far enough from Lucca to be really in the country, but close enough to get into town easily. It is also a great location for day trips; in our case Pisa, Florence, Modena, the marble quarries and the Cinque Terre. The weather was hot, but the AC worked. The whole experience couldn't have been much better.

Wonderful family gathering and holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had the opportunity to stay at Villa Buralla in the heat of August 2017. A group of five families, long standing friends from Europe and Canada converged in Tuscany for two weeks. We had a total of 11 adults and 9 children for various times of our holiday.

We booked and paid for this trip in April and were very excited. The accommodation and trip lived up to every expectation we had. The pool was enjoyed daily. The A/C in every bedroom worked. The smaller villa was occupied by a family with small infants and was perfect for them.

Manuela was amazing co-ordinating all of the support staff. The gardener, pool staff, cleaning staff were punctual and discrete. Simonetta and her cooking, along with Antonio and Michaela's hospitality not to mention their grappa was the icing on the cake.

Having authentic dinners in the Tuscan sun on while linen while we enjoyed wine, prosecco, grappa - we all have wonderful memories of this trip. Thank you so much Simon.

Gorgeous, relaxing setting.

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to Burralla, and it was a magical as we remembered! We had a large family group, which the property comfortably accommodated. The younger kids loved the pool, and Simonetta, the private chef available through the property, came in and prepared two fantastic dinners, which we enjoyed outside with the spectacular evening views. One tip we learned on this trip was rather than drive into Florence and fight the traffic and parking, take the train from Pescia, which is short drive from the house and has regular service directly to the main station in Florence. Simon (and Manuela) thanks for your gracious assistance!

Quality Family Time - Amazing setting

  • 5 of 5

Our family group of 11 loved our stay at this location. Once you find your way to the villa it is perfect to explore the area. The view from the rooms and back area was outstanding. We had Simonetta come to cook on two evenings and love her seafood meal. Amazing. There was hiking in the area. It would have been nice to know more about the local trails. We did a few day trips to Lucca, a hiking day trip to Monte Forato near Garfanana, as well as a drive to Pistoia. The campanile in Pistoia was my favorite of all of our views. So much to see in the area just not enough time. The gelateria in town only a few minutes from the villa was our favorite in all of Tuscany, the owner was sweet. This really is a great place. There is a photo of volleyball in the guide and you will not find that. The kids loved the table tennis, bocce ball and the gardener got the soccer balls and such out for us at the end of the stay. A chess set would have been a nice addition in the game room or the sitting room.

I would say if you are looking for a nice location to assemble the family and enjoy amazing scenery this is the place. You can have quality time together, enjoy the views over a nice glass of wine.

Owner's Response: Great to hear you had such a good time. You are right - there are so many things to do and trails to explore. Please come back and benefit from a returner's discount and we'll make sure the volleyball net is up! (Apologies for that - the gardener speaks good English so if anything is missing, please don't hesitate to ask.) Totally agree with your sentiment about the chess board. Over the years of renting I have come to realise it is impossible for a chess set to survive intact for an entire rental season so I have stopped buying new ones, but there are random games and puzzles and DVDs in the playroom chest. Simon
