The View House is the epitome of graciousness, peace, quiet, and privacy. It is a tropical oasis on three acres of manicured grounds, fragrant flowers, and tropical fruit trees. The predominant colors are the crystal-clear blue sky, countless shades of tropical green foliage, and the deep blue-green ocean. The oxygen-rich air reaches the estate untainted over 2500 miles of the Pacific. The sunlight actually sparkles in the air at times. All these elements taken together create a Garden of Eden that you will never want to leave.

From the large, sweeping lanai (deck), Maui can be seen in the distance across the Pacific. The View House is a lovingly renovated and updated sugar plantation house, retaining the feel of a bygone era. Superbly crafted and furnished with tropical bamboo and teak furniture, it offers an elegant and light-filled space.

All water running into the house comes from deep Island aquifers and is double-filtered and pure. Floors are hardwood and tile. The house features a lovely bathroom with a soaking tub, a large, fully-equipped kitchen with Mexican counter tops, a master bedroom with a queen bed and ocean view, a small bedroom with twin beds and garden view, and a fold-out queen bed in the living room.

For even deeper relaxation, guests at the View House have exclusive use of our spa. Our infrared sauna, hot tub, and cold tub sit on totally private decks, surrounded by lime and moringa trees. Guests will find an additional shower room and water closet in the adjoining tiled breezeway.

The View House is our only rental. We are a small, private operation and offer a serene, safe, exceptionally clean environment in “old Hawaii,” off the beaten track. We are 4 miles from spectacular Waipio Valley and 4 miles from a historic small “sugar town” with all amenities. We are an hour from Kona and an hour from Hilo, making both sides of the Island accessible. The most common feedback we get is that the home and property are more beautiful than the photos.

If you are coming to the Big Island in search of beauty, peace, serenity, relaxation, and rejuvenation, you have found what you are looking for! Our part of the island still expresses traditional Hawaiian “Aloha,” and the View House is the culmination of your quest.

Beautiful relaxing vacation retreat

I feel blessed to have spent 2 wonderful weeks at this beautiful property.

The 2-bedroom house is clean and tastefully furnished. The stunning views from the dining room, living room and master bedroom overlook the bountiful orchard and the Pacific Ocean beyond. The full kitchen has everything needed to prepare meals at home. The additional amenities of the private hot tub (with a view of the orchard & ocean) and the private infrared sauna are extremely relaxing and healing. I enjoyed falling asleep at night in the master bedroom featuring a view of the canopy of sparkling stars in the clear night sky, and then awaking in the morning to a view of the orchard and the sea and sometimes a rainbow.

The property, which is located about half-way between the town of Honokaa and Waipio Valley, is so tranquil that I found myself often preferring to spend my time just relaxing on the property rather than driving off to "sight-see". My days were happily filled enjoying strolls in the orchard, where I picked the delicious fresh fruit (oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, kumquats, avocados, lemons, limes, etc.) for my lunch, and then luxuriating in the hot tub and sauna before dinner. When I did venture out & about to explore, returning "home" was always the perfect way to end the day.

I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely owners, who are exceptionally thoughtful hosts. The caretakers are gracious and kind, and I am so glad that I got to meet them both.

I loved my 2-week stay at this beautiful property, and I would highly recommend it to everyone seeking a relaxing vacation or retreat.

Perfect for two

Really nice home, very basic, but welcoming and well maintained. The views are fantastic, the orchards scrumptious-don’t go to the farmers market for fruit. They really have everything you need. Location was good, about 30” to Hapuna Beach. Would definitely stay here again.

Beauty, serenity, hospitality, and peace!!

The View House is such a gracious retreat. The setting is as pictured. You wake and end your days to beautiful views of land and sea! The bird songs are indescribable, the fruit trees bountiful — never had better fresh squeezed grapefruit juice or avocado in my life! We loved the location — accessible to all the places we wanted to explore. The house is simple and cozy, comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen, and supplies to support exploration and play on the island. And finally, what a treat to have a private sauna and hot tub!!!

The care takers, Marcus and Shegeko, are so kind, gracious and informative. Our only complaint, we had to leave.....

Tropical vibe, fresh air and ocean views for days, in excellent location

My significant other and I felt very spoiled when we stepped into this beautiful country home. We chose it because we prefer being out of the big city/ resort areas, and in more natural settings where the more beautiful sights are sure to be found (though some require some work). This house is on the NW shore of the Big Island near the end of a paved country road. At the end of the road, five minutes away, you find the Wapio Valley. We have explored the entire island and this area, along with the Pololu Valley on the other side of the Kohala Valley near Hawi are our two favorite places. They contain beautiful black sand beaches and hidden treasures amongst lush jungle, and you can hike as far as you want even connecting the two. Note that to go beyond the Wapio Lookout and to the beach, you must walk or 4x4 down the steepest road in the US (FUN!). You can have campfires all day on the beach, surf, and strong swimmers can enter the water on calmer days.

There is NO beach access directly from the house, however the calmer and more touristy white sandy beaches of the Kona Coast are less than an hour away (the best snorkeling on the Kona Coast is about 2 hours away). These activities were within easy striking distance for us and staying out of the touristy areas was well worth the beautiful drive across island periodically. Volcanoes NP is also an easy day trip and you can hit a beach or two or Hilo en route. Note that we found the southern entrance to the park near Kalapana way better as there is actual flowing lava down there that you can get within arms reach of. If you're into waterfalls, the tallest at 1300' is in the Wapio Valley and you can hike there, however it is about 2 hours each way and multiple stream crossings are requisite; some require swimming! Many other awesome waterfalls and swimming holes are close by and much easier to access.

Ok, obviously you can tell we are into LOCATION above all. The house was immaculately clean, no mold and I did a cursory glance for it, nice well appointed kitchen, huge whirlpool tub, private sauna and hot tub on the lower deck, nice furniture, ocean view deck to eat on, many fruit trees in the large plantation like back yard (and some waiting for you on the counter). I have been to the windward (rainy) side of many HI islands, during rainy season, and have never felt 'rained out'.

Owner's Response: We feel "mission accomplished" when our guests have a positive experience with us. We are grateful to be able to provide this lovely environment. One note: the naturopathic office on the ground floor of the house has been transformed into an overflow dormitory when more than six people stay in the home. We have built a detached office closer to the road, so the home/office situation no longer exists. We hardly used the office since our mainland clinic keeps us busy.

Very comfortable vacation home

We loved this place. It was very clean, comfortable, and had amazing views of the ocean. The owners have thought of everything you might need. We appreciated the cooler that we took with us on day trips around the island. The sound of the wind through the trees and the birds singing lulled us to sleep each night and greeted us each morning as we left the patio doors open in the master bedroom. We had a wonderful stay. The only complaint we have is the traffic on the road in front of the house. There’s not a lot of traffic but enough to spoil the complete serenity that could be experienced at this lovely location.

Owner's Response: I have written about this before as every once in a while someone mentions cars going by. The house is set on a country road in a rural area. Very much "old Hawaii," off the beaten track with lush vegetation and very aloha-filled people. The house is set back and separated from the road by a 3-bay carport. The road dead ends in four miles. When I read this review it was 8:00 PM so I tuned in on the road immediately.... for the next half hour, not one car went by. Since Waipio Valley is at the end of the road, during the day, from about 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, there is light (2-3 cars average a minute) tourist traffic and an occasional truck. After 6:00 PM or so, it is just local traffic and not many people live between the rental home and the end of the road. After sundown, there is hardly any traffic. After 9:00 PM, maybe 2-3 cars an hour, max, dwindling to nothing during the rest of the night. There is a bit more traffic on holidays, proportional to the increased number of tourists. Most of our reviewers talk about the quietness and serenity and are undisturbed or even unaware of road traffic. If you are a potential renter and are very sensitive to occasional light auto traffic, then a more secluded location might work better for you. Otherwise, rest assured that our location is quiteter than most on the Island, and certainly much quieter than any hotel.

A Unique Experience

The view house is an early sugar plantation home lovingly restored by its owners, Marcel and Connie Hernandez who were gracious hosts. The home sits on about 4 acres of land overlooking the ocean and, as advertised, has vegetation bursting with fruits such as lemons, limes, oranges, ( the best ever), starfruit, grapefruit and the biggest avocados we have ever seen. Being able to harvest these juicy and delicious fruits were a real treat for us.

The home is very well cared for and has all the necessities and more for a relaxing and restorative vacation. This is the real Hawai'i, rural, natural, and away from the tourist hustle and bustle of Kona. The weather is always warmer and drier in Kona, but you can get there easily to enjoy the beaches and return back to the higher elevations and peacefulness of the view house.

The view house is located very near the Waipio Valley which is a must if you have rented a 4 wheel drive. It's a most amazing adventure.

We stayed for 10 days and enjoyed the small town of Honokaa, about 5 minutes away and met many interesting and friendly people.

We highly recommend you take advantage of this most interesting place in your travels.

My wife, Connie, and I are both Naturopathic Physicians and maintain a small, part-time office on the property. We see patients and tend the organic orchards and gardens. Our dear friends, Marcus and Shigeko Bachino, work with us in providing unobtrusive support, when needed. It is a blessing to live in this special place and be so closely in touch with the land. We looked for land to purchase in Hawaii for more than 10 years before we found this little piece of paradise. When we bought it, it had two aging plantation houses in need of extreme TLC. Our close friends thought we were nuts. Many years later, even Hawaii-born visitors marvel at the beauty and magic that are so tangible everywhere on the property.

Special places with benches invite visitors to stop and breathe in the beauty. Fruit tree loaded with their bounty are perfect for grazing.

What makes this house unique

Imagine that you wake up in the morning to the songs of tropical birds. The sunrise is filtering through the palms, jacaranda and orchid trees, creating shadow patterns on the walls of your bedroom. The soft, gentle rain that fell through part of the night created a soothing cadence on the metal roof of your lovely quarters. You have slept well. Sliding open the large glass door, you step from your bedroom out onto the lanai, take a deep breath of pure ocean air, do a few stretches and gaze out over the deep blues of the Pacific Ocean. The trade winds are light. It is a sparkling clear day. Across the channel, Maui is shrouded in a slight mist. Donning a sarong, you walk down the lanai steps into the orchard to collect your fruit salad. A couple of ripe papayas, a passion fruit or two and a starfruit tumble into your harvest basket. A hand of tasty apple bananas awaits you on the kitchen counter. A huge, round butter avocado and a couple of Tahitian limes complete your breakfast. What to do after breakfast? Should you pack a picnic lunch and hike 40 minutes through the miles of preserve bordering the estate to the spectacular coastal views from the cliffs overlooking the ocean? Perhaps a beach trip to the legendary Waipio Valley, just four miles away? Or a 5-minute trip into town to browse the galleries and have a cup of tea? There are so many things to see and do on the island, like visiting the volcano, driving up to the Mauna Kea observatories, exploring the lush drive to Hilo. Maybe you'll just lie in the hammock for a while and think about it. Or lounge in the spa. After all, it is a gorgeous day, and you are here to relax and rejuvenate.
