The views and serenity of the property are unmatched. The kitchen was extremely well equipped. The house can get chilly, but the mobile heaters were a big help. The property offers a unique opportunity to stay in a historical home.

This was our second stay at Pu'u Menehune and was every bit as enjoyable as our first. The house is exactly as described, comfortable but with lots of antiques. The beds were comfortable and the sheets were nice. The views of Mauna Kea are the star of the show. Even a rainy week was very peaceful, complete with cozy blankets. We were fortunate enough to see the i'o (hawaiian hawk). Look forward to our next chance to return.

So. Many. Birds.
My husband and I stayed at this home for a vacation on the Big Island, but he needed to work for a few hours each day--the wifi was excellent. He set up on the dining room table which looks out to Mauna Kea. So many birds! The koa trees planted on the property are habitat for many, many birds. Waimea is at 2700 feet elevation so bring a hoodie! I wore shorts and a hoodie and was comfortable running around town. Hapuna beach is just down the hill, we went almost every day. This property is the perfect location for my husband and me (a birder): quiet, beautiful, close enough to the beach.

Beauty of Mauna Kea
Such an astonishing view and super cute home. You feel as though you are in your own world and a different era. Very well done decor for the old world feel. The kitchen was stocked beautifully and also the perfect set up for cooking. The land goes without saying- very very special.Every morning waking to the view of the sacred Mauna Kea mountain.Peter was a great host and available whenever needed. On the flip side, i do believe the house could usesome real updates to linens, rugs and general housekeeping care. Windows were dirty with spider webs- some furtniture is broken and seems to have been that way for a bit. Water pressure is not great and the Japanese tub does not work.I would recommend staying here because the beauty alone cannot be beat- but there could definitely be some cosmetic upgrades to get it into shape.

Beautiful home - at one time ...
Though this house is marketed as a stately home with precious antiques and decor, it is not. Perhaps it was 15 or 20 years ago; but the well worn and broken old furniture, cracked and moldy windows and walls, and overgrown brush and trees surrounding the old house show the test of time in this beautiful ranch country. The cleaning service seems to do their best between guests, but for those who expect more than surface cleanliness, I would recommend looking elsewhere. We were very disappointed.

We have many guests stay at Pu'u Menehune and each person has their own expectations. We have had no complaints until this guest's recent posting. In fact, just the opposite. The prior guests thanked us for allowing them to stay at Pu'u Menehune and they let us know they had a wonderful time! The Property was just renovated this past Fall with fresh paint and stain on our wrap-around deck! The interior of the house is always thoroughly cleaned and "dressed" properly for guest arrivals. The Property has a beautiful, expansive lawn that is cut every 2 weeks and the house is nestled in a native (endemic) Ohia and Koa grove that surround the Property. Other than one azalea bush and one gardenia bush, and beautiful hydrangeas, there are no other plants or bushes near or next to the house as the guest describes.
We are puzzled as the guest's description of the Property as "overgrown with bushes and trees". There are bushes and trees in the surrounding landscape, but it is well maintained and distant from the house.
At this time, there are beautiful cherry trees "going-off" (i.e., in full bloom)!
The guest who commented on the Property may have confused our Property with another. Contrary to her complaint, we do not, as she states, market the property as a "stately home with precious antiques" (her words). Our property is marketed as a restored, historic, Waimea bungalow (a paniolo or ranch house) and that is how we price it. It is a beautiful Waimea, ranch-house, freshly painted, and located in a beautiful setting surrounded by fabulous nature!
The house has many antiques (cherry-wood beds, armoires, dining room tables and chairs, walnut sideboard, antique, rewired lamps, lights, and chandeliers, restored porcelain double-basin kitchen sink, porcelain pedestal bathroom sinks, antique doors and door knobs, French doors, historic, leaded-glass windows, etc.), but we do not describe them as "precious" (as she contends), although they are precious to us! We ask guests to please take care because the house has been refurbished with antiques and the house is precious to us. We hope people will respect the house. Perhaps our guest took offense....where none was intended. As for her comment regarding wear and broken furniture, there is a broken card-table in the living room, but it is folded and not intended for present use. There are two "frayed" rattan chairs on the deck that need replacement, but they are fine for use for guests wanting to enjoy the Property's "stately views" (the views are stately). If you are looking for a stately manor, please consider another property.
I spoke with our housekeeper (Michele) after she reviewed the guest's post, and we both had a chuckle, as she commented that the review did not seem rational. She reaffirmed that the house was kept very clean with no mildew. She said she could best describe the guest's words "as a glass of wine, half-full, with a fly in it." Michele is amusing!
In any case, most of the windows are double-hung windows and we are in the process of re-glazing them. We intend to complete that project, but its is still a-work-in-progress.
A guest who stayed at Pu'u Menehune just prior to the complaining guest Emailed us the following kind and appreciative comment after his family's stay:
"Mahalos for the wonderful time we had on the property!" That is a man whose attitude reflects a full glass of wine, with no fly!
We cannot be "all things to all people", but we do offer guests who want it "a wonderful stay in a historic, ranch-style bungalow, located in Waimea's Paniolo Country with breath-taking vistas, surrounded by nature, and beautiful birds!" We have many, annual repeat guests which belies the comments of our complaining guest!

I want to be clear, most of the reasons for our rating were out of our host's control. There are many good reasons to stay in this house. Our trip was one of those where a lot of things went wrong. The house is in a fantastic location in the hills above Waimea, with wonderful views of Mauna Kea. We saw wild turkeys, pheasants, and wild pigs on the property. The guestbook in the house had many entries where previous guests noted the peace and tranquility of the home. We stayed in December, in a very rainy and cold period. The host had warned us to bring warm clothing, which we did. However, there was a gap under the back door and in some window frames where wind and rain were coming in, making the home very cold and damp. In a discussion with the host after our visit, the host did think the house had settled recently and was sending a carpenter in to work on the door. So I would imagine this may not happen to other visitors. However, we used every blanket in the house to keep warm, and we left those out to be washed after our visit. While we didn't find the house to be very comfortable, the weather was a factor in that. Certainly the host is not responsible for the weather. Our host did call me after we left, asking about a door handle that had fallen off, and a leaky soap bottle. The handle had fallen off the first time I touched it, and the soap was already leaking when we got there. I suggest that the host visit his house to see what items need repair.

These guests notified us just prior to departure that a door would not lock (i.e., a deadbolt would not engage). They did not report to us that a glass door-knob to the pantry had also shattered.
We immediately sent our carpenter who made a fix (same day) of the deadbolt and also replaced the pantry door-knob.
Our housekeeper called the day these guests departed to complaint of bits of tissue paper strewn about the floor of the house, liquid laundry soap spilled all over the pantry shelf and at our coffee station, and further complained of the pantry's broken glass, door-knob. I called these guests immediately after their departure to ask them to address these issues?
While the broken deadbolt and broken glass door knob may not have been their cause, they left the house in poor condition and we did not respond to their request at the end of their stay to rebook Pu'u Menehune for Christmas 2026.
At the end of their stay, these same guests tried to rebook Pu'u Menehune for Christmas (2026). But because of the poor condition in which the house was left, we did not respond. We encourage guests to use commercial fire logs (from the grocery store) and to dress warm in Winter. That is part of the charm of up-country living!!!
These same guests have stayed at Pu'u Menehune twice before in the past year, so they clearly enjoy the Property and their comments are very favorable. We appreciate guest-comments and we have repaired the broken door. Mahalo nui, Peter

Mixed review / lovely setting , privacy, building and antique furniture needed repairs
This property is quiet and beautiful to look out over, the building is in need of repair, decks and railing are to the point of replacing because of severe deterioration, windows in bedroom hadcardboard and paper to plug the gaps, much of the furniture was in various states of disrepair ! Now that being said - why did you stay? We booked a 7 week rental and the property warranted us to overlook the hassle of finding another place in the 11th hour. This property has so much potential - it’s a unique rental, the feeling of solitude is there, magnificent views, a welcoming and great property mgr, and we hope the place gets the attention it deserves in the future. Propietario/a: Peter Lenhart
Gail and Peter are the owners and proprietors of Pu'u Menehune. We grew up in Hawaii and love the Big Island (especially Waimea!) and have a passion for historic homes and architecture, antiques, and native flora and fauna. We undertook this project (Pu'u Menehune) to save this beautiful, historic paniolo home, to furnish it with antiques and period fixtures, and to surround it with native (indigenous and endemic) trees and plants, and to protect the beautiful stream and waterfalls. We are in the process of reforesting the property with native trees and understory.
Por qué escogió este alojamiento
Pu'u Mehehune is truly unique. We don't brag the largest house, the most modern, the most number of bedrooms or fireplaces. We are a 'Waimea' experience. If you wish to come, to stay, and to experience Waimea as it 'was', to enjoy a beautiful historic, home in a breathtaking environment where you have privacy (an electronic ranch gate), peace, and quiet, and a place where you can't put your camera away or stop your wonderment, then we may be the property for you. Pu'u Menehune is not just a vacation rental -- it is an experience!
Qué hace que este alojamiento sea especial
You may not want to leave Pu'u Menehune once you come. Perhaps you should leave yourselves a few extra days in case you can't bring yourselves to pack your bags. We have had children cry when they were told by their parents that it is time to leave. We have had artists leave us their artwork to share with us drawings of our beautiful vistas. We have had photographers send us copies of their beautiful photographs of our property and views. We have had guests send us short-stories of their wonderful adventures and experiences during their stay. We have had guests leave us Aloha (love) gifts to show their appreciation for letting us sharing Pu'u Menehune with them. Pu'u Menehune is a delicate treasure. A place that is unique in its history, in its setting, in its architecture, in its views, in its natural and abundant flora and fauna, and its 'out of this world' stream and waterfalls. Enjoy the pictures! They tell the story better than we can in words.
