About the property

House (nightly rate based on 2 adults), 2 Bedrooms + Bunk Area, 2 Baths

This house is located at a 4000 foot elevation in the mountains near Kings Canyon National Park and borders the Giant Sequoia National Monument. This is a ridgetop location on 10 acres with hiking, fishing, boating, and horseback riding close by. The uniqueness lies in the mountain views, many black oak and manzanita trees, and dark night skies. If you seek privacy and comfort in the midst of an oak woodland landscape, this is the place for you.

About Cindy Duriscoe

About us... Cindy and Dan Duriscoe, the owners of the property, want your stay to be as enjoyable as possible. We are former employees of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and we want to share our knowledge with you. We purchased the property in 1997 and lived here almost 10 years. We know the land, and we did most of the work on the property ourselves. We are constantly making improvements as time allows, and we welcome suggestions. Do not hesitate to inquire about the parks, the monument, and other attractions in the area. We know that this piece of land offers something special at all seasons (Dan's favorite is actually winter). We have watched the land and sky from here, and the peacefulness of the location is unmatched. Both of us enjoy hiking, backpacking, X-country skiing in the Sierra. Cindy loves horseback riding and snowshoeing on nearby trails.

Why Cindy Duriscoe chose Sequoia, Kings Canyon

This part of California is known for its mild climate, calm winds and stable air most of the time (which makes for wonderful observations of the night sky through a telescope), fall colors of the black oaks (some seasons are more intense than others), and the elevational gradient that allows quick access to a variety of life zones. We think this location is ideally located for access to the high country and foothills, and gives a taste of both. The peace and quiet, walking among our own manzanita woodlands cannot be experienced elsewhere.

What makes this house unique

Taking walks on the property and neighboring monument lands. Watching the sunset while enjoying a glass of wine. Observing the night sky or a sunrise from the hot tub. Mountain biking or horseback riding on nearby trails. The community of people is very friendly and helpful when work needs to be done. Wintertime can be very peaceful and majestic walking roads and trails, making wildlife observations, just plain having fun in the snow!

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a great way to wrap up a three week California adventure. We had fun exploring the parts of the park that are still open (hiked the Redwood Canyon loop and braved some icy spots to get to the incredible views on Little Baldy), and loved coming "home" to this amazing house. There is nothing better than a hot tub under the stars after a day of hiking. We hope to be able to come back one day!

Great Location

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this 'rustic' cabin that was super close to the Kings Canyon park entrance. The owner was attentive and called us to make sure that we had made it okay and if we needed anything. The view was gorgeous and super relaxing. The beds were all very comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked with cookware and utensils. However, some of the forks and knives need to be replaced due to age. It was nice to have a washer and dryer handy to wash up some laundry while we stayed there. I would recommend bringing some extra laundry soap if you need to do more than a few loads. There is no Wifi which we preferred since we were on vacation. However, if you needed to use your cell phone, we found that we had limited service on Verizon. If one person was using their phone and another person tried to use theirs, there was no service for the 2nd person. Also, make sure that you get groceries in Fresno before you arrive since there are not any nearby grocery stores. On a side note, if you are planning to also see Yosemite National Park, I would recommend doing Kings Canyon and Sequoia first then go north to Yosemite. I say this because we did Yosemite first and were really wowed by the scenery and water falls and then came to Kings Canyon and it didn't really have as much of a 'wow' factor. Although we did get to see a black bear and her cub in Kings Canyon that were crossing the road and then while we were hiking we saw a black bear and 2 cubs in Sequoia National Forest near the Beetle Rock Trail that was close to the parking lot for the trail head.

Great place to Relax and close to NP

  • 5 of 5

The property was a great escape from the fast paced lives we live. I really enjoyed the view from the front sitting in front of a fire and drinking my coffee. The 3 bed/2bath came in nice for our family. Full kitchen was a plus. Will def stay again if ever in this area. Owners are great to work with. The drive to the property is a fantastic journey in itself. Book and think about how peaceful it was when you leave.

Peace and Tranquility

  • 5 of 5

This place is very secluded and peaceful, with a great view of the mountains. The owners were great and called to check in to make sure we made it and everything was ok. It's conveniently located just outside of the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, which are basically the same if you didn't know. They use the same entrance and require one $30 fee for both. Once in you go north for KCNP and south for SNP.

COME PERPARED. We entered off 180 from the north and drove down a windy road to the cabin and from that direction we saw no grocery store / gas stations in the area. Fortunately we brought food for the grill and had other supplies from a previous stay. Also don't trust your GPS. Our Garmin told us we had arrived at our destination which in fact the house was still a half mile south on the left side coming from the north.

Property could use some updating; however, it was clean, well priced and located close to Kings Canyon Seqouia Park.
