Overview

About the property

Cabin, 5 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 10-12)

Large Modern 5 BR Cabin with warm In Floor Heat, Woodstove, and well-stocked kitchen. Cabin Guests Enjoy Exclusive Recreational and Hunting Rights on 700+ Acres Prime Elk, Mule Deer, Antelope, Bear, Coyote, Bobcat, and Mountain Lion Habitat surrounded by Low Pressure Private land. There's also plenty of nearby public hunting and hiking on Little Sheep and Sheep Mountain. This property is a well traveled elk route leading to Muddy Creek.

It's just south of HWY 69 and is located in GMU 85 which has Over-The-Counter Bull Elk tags for 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons and OTC Either-sex Elk Archery tags. A half a mile from our boundary is the Wolf Springs Ranch which requires 19 preference points to draw. Colorado has the largest Elk Population in the Country. In fact there are about twice as many Elk in Colorado than Montana and about as many as New Mexico, Idaho, and Wyoming combined.

Hunting season prices are based on up to 4 hunters. Additional charge for more than 4 hunters. Late Cow Seasons: December and January are based on 2 hunters, with additional charge for more than 2 hunters.

**HUNT GUARANTEE** Anyone who does not fill their tag during a regular Archery or Rifle Season may bring their entire hunting party back for a Late Season Cow Elk Hunt for $995/week.

The property is available year round for Hiking, Scouting, and Horseback riding. It's located just a few miles out of the small town of Gardner, CO which has a General store/Restaurant/Deli, a bar, and some real characters. Gardner is located 30 minutes from I-25 in Walsenburg and 30-40 minutes from the resort town of Westcliffe which offers shopping and many dining options.

The setting is convenient, but secluded. The cabin is located at the base of Apache Ridge. There isn't another house to be seen for miles. There are the Snow capped Sangre de Cristos to the West and the Green Mountains to the North and East. From the top of Apache Ridge, you can see Big Sheep and Little Sheep Mountain. The driveway is over 1 mile long and is a dirt road. If rain or snow is in the forecast, 4WD is required.

Gardner is a historic town originally founded along the stage route from Westcliffe/Silvercliffe to Walsenburg. Some of the newly paved highway 69 is a proposed part of the 'Frontier Pathways Scenic Byway' passing the landmark Gardner Butte just as you come thru town. The entire area was hunting grounds for Apache, Comanche, and Ute Indians with plenty of artifacts and arrowheads remaining. In the 1960's the town became a mecca for hippies. Communes were formed and at least one still exists. Don't miss the annual 'Gardner Days' Music Festival in July.

While we mostly cater to hunters, this property is a great place to get away from the city lights and see the open sky. It's large enough to accomodate family gatherings and there are loads of attractions within an hour's drive.

About The Owner

Cameron is a Real Estate Broker at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia. He enjoys hunting with his kids in Virginia and traveling to Colorado to hunt. His kids are almost old enough to hunt in Colorado.

The Owner purchased this cabin in 2008

Why The Owner chose Southeast

We bought this as a secluded getaway and then discovered what prime Elk Hunting Habitat it is. We got the recreational lease on the state land which adjoins the property to give us over 700 Acres of Exclusive Hunting and Recreational rights. Then we formed the 'Elk Haus Cabin' available for rental.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin has all the amenities of home including electricity (which can be rare in this area). Kitchen is fully stocked and has 2 refrigerators, 2 sinks, and a dishwasher. It is 1.5 miles off the hard surface road and secluded w/ amazing mountain views in every direction.

Elk Haus Hunting Review 2016

  • 5 of 5

We were a 4 person hunting group during the October rifle season. The Elk Haus accommodations exceeded our expectations. Clean, spacious, and more than we could ask for during a hunting trip.

We were also very successful with the hunt. We filled 1 Bull Tag, 3 Cow Elk Tags and 1 Buck Mule deer tag. Saw plenty of animals. It was nice to have the opportunity to process our meat at the Cabin or take a quick trip into town for processing.

Got a chance to meet and visit with the owner, Cameron and enjoyed his insight and stories of the property.

Thanksgiving Staycation

The Elk Haus home was an awesome choice with lots of space and scenery was amazing. Cameron is very tentative with all questions and helpful throughout our stay. The kids had a blast!! This was the first time the majority of the family got to experience "real" snow... We would love to come back in our 4x4 ;)

Elk Haus visitor

House, facilities were everything as described......and much better. The property is absolutely gorgeous and the house has plenty of Windows for a continuous view. Everything worked well and we were extremely satisfied. We had a family vacation (10 people at times)'and the home accommodated our group fine. We also elk hunted for late season elk (cow) and saw plenty of sign but we're unable to score. Some of our party skied at Monarch during the stay. Must have 4x4 for roadway in during extreme conditions.

I couldn’t ask for a better place to go on my first elk hunt. I harvested a bull on the first day of first rifle season and all three of my hunting partners each had a bull down by the third day! All four bulls were taken right on the property--only a few hundred yards from the cabin. We spent the rest of our week hanging out in the cabin, playing pool, and telling stories about the hunts. We’d all love to come back again.

Elk Haus 2nd week of Archery season 2014

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time during our stay at Elk Haus. The cabin and facilities were awesome. The elk were there during our visit. This was my first archery elk hunt and our guide was called away for a family emergency. As rookies we were still able to call many bulls in but unable to get a shot. Even without a kill it was an outstanding experience. This is a remote and rugged location so it's not for the faint of heart.

Perfect for my outdoorsmen'

  • 5 of 5

We were amazed by the wildlife around your house, some of which we were able to snap pictures of. On Monday evening when we got back to the cabin for the evening there was a huge herd of elk, at least 40-50, right at the fence in the front of the cabin. I am attaching a picture for you. They had moved just a bit by the time we got the camera, but it's still an amazing site. Would you be able to forward the picture to Lyn? He asked to see it but I didn't have it on me when we left. I told him I would send it to you.

The boys absolutely LOVED the horses and spent time with them every day. I've attached some pictures of that as well. One morning there were elk right outside the bedroom window and another morning mule deer outside at the bottom of the back deck......simply amazing! The hiking was perfect for the kids, you would've thought we reached the top of Mt. Everest when we got to the top. They were so excited! They made memories that will last a lifetime and are already wanting to come back. My husband is a big hunter and may contact you for his next trip out west. Thanks again for everything!

God Bless,
