Secluded paradise

  • 5 of 5

While researching travel plans for our family's first trip to Hawaii, I spent countless hours trying to figure out everything I could. Eventually a decision had to made and Ocean Song lived up to our high expectations.

Our search had first looking hotels. Spending $300+ a night for a hotel room near or on the beach had me questioning how comfortable the four of us would be in a hotel room. Looking at suites in the same hotels quickly took to the price to $500 and way up per night.

Luckily I stumbled upon VRBO and began looking at houses to rent. Our research continued as we scoured the island in areas where we felt we would be in the position to do the many things we wanted to while on the island. After building a top ten list of houses we put it to a vote and Ocean Song was selected.

Once we arrived at the house, all our worries vanished. The house was just as pictured and the pictures cannot do justice to the views. If I had it to do all over again, I would not hesitate to go this route again. We found ourselves in the exact situation we were dreaming for when planning our vacation.

The location is definitely not in a hub of activity or touristy area. It is about an hour south of the Kona airport and feels like it is the only house on the island once you step out on the back porch - absolutely stunning!

A main goal of ours was snorkeling and went with a boat charter to the Captain Cook monument area directly across the bay. After reading through just about every post from previous visitors to Ocean Song, we learned of a path down to the ocean. The path is somewhat tricky and I recommend caution if you choose to explore it. Also, the even trickier part is getting in and out of the ocean.

If you choose to explore the adventurous side and go into the ocean behind the house you will be rewarded with breath taking underwater views of coral and plentiful fish - we swam with a sea turtle amidst the beautiful scenery.

This location is absolutely perfect if you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist hubs. The drive to Kailua felt shorter each time we took it, and this location made for a great split between Kailua and the volcano which was another major focus of our activities.

If you are on the fence between hotel resort life and renting a home, but have reservations about renting a home, I would definitely recommend the home rental route for anyone who is not 100% set on being in the middle of the resort life.

Spectacular views

  • 5 of 5

The views from the property is spectacular. It's relaxing to just sit in the backyard, enjoy the views of the ocean and hear the waves.

The property is a drive from the highway, but worth it.

Gorgeous view! Beautiful, spacious home!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 loved this home and location! Surf was high so we couldn't swim here in the ocean, but the pool was great! Several mornings we drove north to safer places to swim, which was totally fine. Our favorite was Mauna Kea beach- but you have to get there early. We got there by 10 one morning and lot was full and they wouldn't allow any more people. Next time we arrived at 8:30, kids had their fill by 1pm, and we could go back to the house, rest, and enjoy drinks by the pool and swim again there! We saw the pool guy briefly as he cleaned the pool, and the cleaning crew as we were leaving- all extremely kind people. And Larissa called once just to check and see if everything was okay.

House was clean & very well stocked - shampoo/soaps, snorkel gear, goggles, towels... would definitely stay here again! We've been to 4 of the islands, and last time on the big Island we stayed at a home on Alii drive. We would choose this home again- the pool, patio & view were that awesome!

VOG on BIG ISLAND--residents told not to mention -- will hurt tourism.

  • 1 of 5

The house was beautiful and very comfortable. The view from the back lanai cannot be marched. The pool was perfect and quite large. We were able to use it once before the VOG (volcanic emmisions) started and I started coughing. A visit to the island hospital a few days later found I had beginning pneumonia. The haze grew worse so I had to stay indoors until we left for home. Travelers should be warned to avoid this island. I am never ill.

Owner's Response: Joyrene, I am so sorry you ended up getting pneumonia during your travels on the Big Island. To stay inside is really hard when the perfect Hawaiian temperatures are calling you outside. The volcano has been irrupting for over 20 years and thousands of people come to the island every year to visit volcano national park. Our trade winds determine which direction the smoke will blow. The volcano flows more some months than others causing more or less smoke. The trade winds change throughout the year. The effects of the smoke in our area are always depending on these two variables. Typically being located on the ocean is always the best area for clear air. I am sad and sorry that this beautiful trip you planned to the Big Island turned out to be not everything you had wished for. LaRissa Morris Booking Agent
