Overview

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1.5+ Baths, (Sleeps 2-4)

Opihikao was a beautiful old Hawaii settlement and it has retained an exotic aura. There is jungle all around and few houses. From the cottage you can walk to the ocean and check out the tide ponds and the powerful Ocean waves crashing on the lava rocks. The historic Opihikao Church ( 1823)with a local congregation is just a few blocks away. You are also only a few miles to a black sand beach, and so many other natural wonders, too numerous to list. Best snorkeling this side of the Island.

The Cottage itself has an open beam plan with enclosed bed and bathroom. The bedroom has access to the Lanai which sits high over the orchard of beautiful tropical views. You can pick your own fruits every day and eat them with your favorite beverage on the small table with chairs outside on the Lanai. Bananas and Papayas are year round, and there are always other fruits depending on season. Mangos, White pineapples, Citrus, etc.

The Orchard has too many varieties of tropical fruits, nuts and spices to list . Have you ever eaten a Rambutan? there are over 200 Rambutan trees!!!

The kitchen has Silestone countertops and a full size stove and refrigerator for preparing any kind and size meals. The cottage is solar powered with a backup generator located far away. And so it is quiet when running.

All appliances and lights are energy efficient. NOT PERMITTED : hair dryers, hot plates, irons or other high wattage appliances as these drain the batteries. Otherwise there is plenty of power for fridge, water pump and other electrical appliances in the cottage.

Hot water and stove are on propane.

This is a place to relax, enjoy nature, and come away refreshed and invigorated. Pahoa town is not far away for restaurants and shopping. And now cottage has high speed internet connection for your laptop or other Wifi connections

Keywords: Cottage is located just off Kamaili Road at Rainbow Orchards with over 45 varieties of tropical fruits, nuts and spices. Pick your own fruit in season. Walk to Ocean

About William Caudill

I am 72 years young, and now retired in Hawaii developing my Tropical Orchard.

I love it here. I am finally able to have chickens too. Also have three dogs, Occasionally there are wild pigs.

On the mainland I worked as the 1st Urban Forester of Pasadena, California for 11 years and another 10 years in Glendale, California as their Urban Forester. I was a Peace corps volunteer in Chile in 1968-70 and the Horticulturist of Raleigh , North Carolina before moving to California in 1978. I am happy to show guests around the orchard and help them with their vacation plans.

William Caudill purchased this cottage in 2010

Why William Caudill chose Puna District

I love the primeval area. The people, the relaxed living and the climate where I am able to grow so many things.

What makes this cottage unique

I enjoy range free eggs and fresh organic fruit.

beautiful rain forest cottage

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is an amazing home on stilts in a lush rain forest located on the beautiful Kalapana lava coast. The house is spacious and furnished with interesting furniture and a comfortable bed. The night sounds are magical - and speaking of magical - one night when we came back after dark and went to open the gate, there was an owl perched on the gate. He/she stayed in place for about 30 seconds, looking around and looking at us. Then we got to watch it fly off!

Our second stay

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed our stay just as much as our first, back in 2011. My mom was so intrigued by our first stay that she asked if she could join us for a second. She found the futon to be quite comfy.

This time we limited our sightseeing to the region of Puna and there was so much to enjoy: farmers markets, thermal pools, lava tree monument, and of course the Orchard on the property. You should totally try a lime after chewing on a "miracle berry." We found this region to be particularly supportive of our vegan/vegetarian diets.

Wonderful and quiet

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay at Bill's home. It was well maintained, roomy, and cheerful. This was our third visit to the island and the first time at Bill's, but we have already decided that if we return his will be the first place we check with.

A beautiful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We had such a relaxing stay at the cottage. Farmer Bill was a great host. We really appreciated his tips about things to do in the area. It was nice being able to cook our own food and walk around the grounds. It would be great to return and stay here again!

Charming stay at a fruit orchard

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at this rental for 3 nights in March, and found the place to be charming. We were treated with yummy fruits, croaking frogs at night and bright green geckos. Though the house is showing signs of age, but our stay was comfortable throughout with all our basic needs covered. Bill was also gracious to give a tour of his orchard. Place is well located within several points of interests such as the lava viewing site.

True off the grid living

  • 4 of 5

I loved the house. It was secluded but hidden right off the road. Quite and private. We felt like we were sleeping in the tree tops. We could hear the roar of the waves on the rocks and the Coqui frogs sung us to sleep.
