Like the owners' other property, Middleton House, McDowell Studio combines 19th-century charm with pure comfort. The Studio, which has lofty ceilings and a generous sitting room, sleeps 4. It occupies the 3rd floor of a handsome historic house, just blocks from downtown, Washington & Lee, and VMI. A charming stone walk winds through the Studio's private garden to its private stairs and entrance. (Since there are two flights of stairs, McDowell Studio is definitely NOT HANDICAPPED-ACCESSIBLE.)
Formerly an artist's studio, the secluded apartment floods with light during the day, thanks to large windows with views and skylights. (Skylights operate electronically and open to catch the breeze.) Hand-printed wallpapers, c. 1880-1890 antiques, sea grass matting, comfortable seating, and a collection of paintings and prints contribute to the flat's atmosphere and charm. A carefully equipped custom kitchen with soapstone counters and a spacious tiled bathroom with shower offer thoroughly modern convenience.
The bedroom features a queen-sized iron and brass bed, while a top-quality sleeper sofa in the living room accommodates two additional guests. Meals can be taken at a small table in the kitchen or a large one in one corner of the airy sitting room.
Visitors can lounge on the sitting room's sofas or on the flat's small porch--or in the Studio's garden, which has a grill and Adirondack chairs. Thanks to the gardens surrounding the house, birdsong fills the air. (Bird-glasses are provided for those who want a closer look.) Guests also enjoy strolling or cycling nearby Wood's Creek Trail, which follows the creek to the Maury River and Jordan's Point Park.
McDowell Studio is perfectly positioned for shopping and dining in historic downtown Lexington. W & L's Lenfest Center, just 3 blocks away, presents concerts, plays, ballets, and even opera. And this luxurious apartment provides a convenient base for visiting Washington & Lee or VMI, with their elegant architecture and abiding sense of Southern tradition. McDowell Studio offers guests a rare opportunity to live graciously in the very heart of historic Lexington.

Historic Lexington, Virginia offers Washington & Lee U., VMI, a vibrant downtown, a lively and friendly community, and easy access to the scenic beauty of the Blue Ridge and Appalachian mountains. McDowell House, surrounded by its gardens, retains its period charm, yet sits just minutes from Lexington's many current attractions.
Guests walk to events at the universities and downtown churches, theaters, and galleries. They enjoy cooking with superb local meats, produce, cheeses, and flours from the nearby Lexington Farmer's Market and specialty grocery and butcher shops. Visitors can stroll to restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, an ice cream parlor, and a micro-brewery. Virginia's mountains, Natural Bridge, Goshen Pass, additional museums, and other attractions are a short car trip away.
We are so thankful for our stay here! This studio exceeded our expectations, from enough dishes to entertain our son & his friends, to the comfortable & spacious sitting area where we enjoyed a rainy Saturday. We will definitely return while our son is a freshman at W & L! Thank you!
We really enjoyed our stay. It was so much better than the typical hotel experience. Besides the extraordinary period correct furnishings and artwork, it just felt like our own personal apartment. It seemed as though the studio had been prepared by an invisible butler that had anticipated our every need. VERY COOL AND SPECIAL!
I loved everything about this studio apartment! It is on the top floor of an historical home, a block and a half from Main Street. We were wowed with the antiques and art from the moment we walked in. Gorgeous. It is spacious, with a separate bedroom, sitting room, full kitchen, and was equipped with anything we could have needed for the weekend. The bathroom and kitchen have modern features, along with 1800's decor. Can't wait to stay here again when visiting our W&L student.
We loved every minute of our stay. Perfect location, well equipped and comfortable! We would definitely book again, and again, and again!
We've stayed in many properties in historic Lexington, but this may be my favorite. The flat has been lovingly restored and is quite comfortable and well appointed. The living area, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom are cozy, light-filled and all a couple needs for an enjoyable visit. From this spot, you can walk to everything, but it's quiet and residential. Stairs are required to reach the third story loft, but it's well worth the effort.
We were two couples heading down to Lexington to enjoy some cycling, eating out, eating in, relaxing and also wanted to find a space in the heart of Lexington which reflected the beautiful historic homes, and had an eat in kitchen. The space is absolutely perfect for 2 people and great for 4 people if one couple is willing to sleep on a queen size pull out couch (we bought a memory foam mattress to put on the pull out couch and plan to bring it next time we stay there). The couch is located in a living room that has pocket doors so you can easily create two bedrooms by closing the doors which leaves the small, well appointed kitchen as common space. We were there in winter so didn't get the chance to eat in the lovely garden below but plan to go back next summer to enjoy it and even do some vegetable kababs on the grill. Peter and Jean were wonderful to deal with and even gave me a short tour of the even more impressive McDowell House below the apartment. The other reviews are 100% accurate with regards to the art (many of Peter's paintings), the wall paper, the furniture, the kitchen that you can cook in, and a great selection of books. We go to Lexington regularly and this will become one of our places to stay over and over again. We are really happy to have found it.
A wonderful, beautifully appointed flat in the gables with large picture windows and skylights. It has a central yet hidden feel at a few minutes' walk from town, campus, strolls in the woods... The decor is really exquisite - from the period wallpaper to the beautiful paintings to the carefully chosen knick-knacks, it is evident that the owners love the place and want you to love it too.
The owners are available and helpful but absolutely not overly present - and the soundproofing between their home downstairs and the flat is impeccable.
Finally, the owners love to cook and the kitchen is equipped with everything you could possibly require - even a rolling pin.
I got a lot of writing done here and I can't wait to come back.
There's no getting around the stairs up to the 3rd floor - people with physical difficulties take note. If climbing up is a challenge, better to choose Middleton House for easy, ground floor access.
