About Edith Schriever

Edith and Ron moved to Bar Harbor from the Netherlands. Ron is working at the Jackson Laboratory and Edith spends most of her time between multiple volunteer positions, writing and taking care of their three children. This summer the family is managing the summer student program and will be the 'dorm- parents' for 34 summer students!

Edith Schriever purchased this house in 2010

Why Edith Schriever chose Bar Harbor

After renting for many years, Edith and Ron finally managed to buy a piece of land and built their dream home in 2010. The location is perfect: a neighborhood for the kids to play in, mountain views for three out of the four seasons, and a wooded area to explore. This has it all. The back yard is still a work in progress and each year Edith and Ron add to the landscaping.

The house is energy efficient and last August the owners installed solar panels. It's important to Edith and Ron to 'go green' as much as possible.

Owl's Nest is enjoyed year-round, with each season's own highlights.

In the winter, the children enjoy sledding down the hill in the back yard, while the spring is the season to re-discover the woods. Summer is a time of relaxation in the back yard, listing to the owls hooting at dusk or having water balloon fights around the house. Fall is an explosion of color, with the different leaves of the maples, the birches and the oaks .

What makes this house unique

The location is perfect: close by all that Mount Desert Island has to offer, yet far away enough to enjoy the peace and quiet. The children can go out and explore without having to be too worried about their where-abouts. The road with the cul-de-sac is great for biking up and down and we often go out for an evening walk with a stop at the ice cream place across Pirate's Cove.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful house to come back to after a day of adventure! Everything we needed was available to us - dishes, pots, pans, linens, paper products, etc. There is an extensive collection of books to read, lots of family games to play and plenty of space to enjoy family time or some solitude. The owners go to a lot of trouble to make sure you feel at home and can find your way around the island. There was an "Amazing Race" type of activity prepared for us to help us become familiar with the area and lots of suggestions for hikes that would suit our family. The house is close to Bar Harbor but far enough away to be able to escape the throngs of people. We had a fabulous time, thank you Edith and Ron!

Wonderful host and home!

  • 5 of 5

Edith was a big help on our trip. She told us about the local places and the best trails in Acadia National Park. She was easily accessible by phone, and answered our questions during our stay quickly, and we were lucky enough to meet her. The home is nice and has a lot more than other places we have rented - a piano, tons of books (for the kids and us!), games, cookware, movies...we definitely plan to go back!

Away from Construction

  • 4 of 5

The Owls Nest has a lot of space and though in a rural area, a decent WiFi connection. This was our third trip to Mount Desert Island, first stay at this home. With the main road and utilities into Bar Harbor under construction, the location was convenient for our daily travel plans to various harbors and hiking. Edith provided great tips on maneuvering around the traffic detours, maps, as well some great sights typically not known by most visitors. The house is well stocked with a variety items and easy to move into for a weeks stay. Edith was helpful in making our reservations and follow-up with information. When a concern arose during our stay they gladly addressed within a reasonable response time.

A lovely house

  • 5 of 5

The Owls Nest was great for groups. It was spacious, offered flexible sleeping arrangements, and a multitude of rooms for people to hang out in. The house is stocked with supplies like pots, pans, shampoo, towels, etc. and the owners also kindly provided basic cooking provisions like salt, pepper, olive oil.

The house is in a quiet neighborhood surrounded by woods. Two of us were lucky enough to see an owl on a quick morning walk and then driving home after dark we spotted a fox on the side of the road!

Edith was also great. She always responded quickly whenever I had a question and provided a binder full of assorted activities and Island information when we checked in at the house.

I would definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the lovely review. So happy you saw an owl and a fox! I always hope my guests have a chance to see the wild life, but I can't guarantee it! There is plenty around, if you are lucky enough to witness it. ;) Thanks for choosing Owls Nest as your Maine Vacation Home. Edith

Stupendous - my son's favorite word

  • 5 of 5

The owls nest was the perfect house and the perfect location for our 8 person trip to Acadia. It is located just a couple miles outside of Acadia so it could not be a better location. The house had full amenities, was clean, was well stocked etc... My parents couldn't believe that I had found such an amazing place to stay. Edith was very responsive and excellent to work with. Diver Ed's Dive in Theater is a must if you have kids. Mainely Meat is a restaurant about a mile up the road and it had excellent lobster dinners and BBQ for those not wanting lobster - can you imagine?? Awesome vacation spot!! Thank you Edith and family!

Wonderful vacation house VERY kid-friendly

  • 5 of 5

My family had such a great time staying at Owl's Nest in Bar Harbor. The house was very spacious with a huge (beautiful) kitchen where we prepared and ate all our breakfasts and many dinners. The large deck was very nice as well.

We have 3 children ages 1, 4 and 7 who loved playing in the yard and driveway. Lets face it - kids need space to run around! The location is a quiet cul du sac with no traffic and lots of privacy, yet a 5 minute drive to downtown Bar Harbor and Acadia. The house had everything we could need and more. Owners are very attentive and accommodating. This was our favorite family vacation ever! I highly recommend this vacation rental!
