About Sandra Wood Forand
Our home base is in Hartford, Connecticut but we frequently escape to our home-away-from-home in Rhode Island, and enjoy traveling in our retirement. We built this -- Bernie's Dream House -- in the first year of our marriage in 2005 and both house and marriage are big successes. The house is large, to welcome various groupings of our 6 children and spouses, and 13 grandchildren (and counting), and numerous friends. After a walk, paddle on the pond or a day at the beach, we like to gather with friends or curl up with lots of books, whether on the deck or by the fire.

Why Sandra Wood Forand chose South Kingstown
Bernie dreamed of a house near the beach his whole life, and having lived in Rhode Island in the past he gravitated to the beautiful RI beaches. He found the land in 2002 and started designing the house before he retired, and by the time Sandy came on the scene it had gone through five architects and numerous design phases. It was worth the wait -- the result is spectacular yet comfortable, expansive yet cozy in each area of the house.
What makes this House unique
Many families choose to rent our house because we have an elevator serving all three levels, so people who are less mobile can be part of the family vacation. Because it is our dream house, it has special touches like beautiful dark Brazilian hardwood and solid oak floors. One of the most striking features is our deck area -- there are 250 square feet of deck on the guest room level, an equal amount on the top main floor, a 150 square foot 'crow's nest' deck at roof level from which you can see the ocean and Block Island. (One of our carpenters assigned to the deck commented, 'There is as much room on these decks as in the whole house!')

Amazing house an location
Owner was very helpful through the process an always responded immediately with answers to any questions. House was well maintained with lots of extras, well worth the rental price. Pond was great for paddling. This was my 5th year renting in RI an this was the best location ever, looking forwarding to returning next year.
Surpasses expectations! Absolutely beautiful!
This home is stunning inside and out with great views! This fully stocked house has it ALL including: dock (we rented a boat to use the provided large towable tube & easy private beach access), canoe, 2 kayaks, massive decks, beautiful hardwoods & tile throughout, huge updated kitchen, linens/beach towels/chairs, and comfortable, higher quality furniture especially the new mattresses! This home is beautifully designed without leftover furniture or outdated rooms. I’m fussy about cleanliness (❤️ no wall-to-wall carpets), central AC (menopause yuck!), comfortable, good quality furniture & we would love to stay again. You will love this home and all it’s amenities!
p.s. Sandy, I am in love with your master bedroom & bath...please, do you remember the colors & name of the tile? Ours is similar but outdated & we have been wanting to redo ours. Yours is STUNNING! You did an amazing job! Thank you for opening your home!
great house and very responsive homeowner
nice layout, spacious, great kitchen, lovely decks, good for a big family
The property was clean, private, peaceful and very well equipped. The welcoming house itself seemed bigger than the pictures reflected. The back "yard" was like a bird sanctuary. The expansive decks provide wonderful views, especially of sunrise over the salt pond and of fireworks the Saturday following the 4th of July. The location provides access to beaches, ferry to Block Island, restaurants and mansions of Newport, and the attractions of Narragansett. If you are not interested in the many activities of RI then the house provides numerous spots for sitting about reading (with many books provided) and relaxing. There is a great deli, a produce market, a local grocer and an excellent coffee shop/bakery within a 3 minute drive. Convenience is basically around the corner yet when on the property you will feel that you are the only one around - the only houses that are in view are across the large pond (at least during the full foliage of summer).
The owner was incredibly responsive and gracious. Thank you for a wonderful house and vacation.
We're so glad you loved our Shangri-La, and greatly appreciate your kind words. Come back next year!
Excellent Family Vacation
Beautiful, well appointed home. Very impressed with all it had to offer. There was something for everyone with the family friendly town beach and peaceful salt pond.
Thanks for your comments. You are right -- the town beach IS family friendly!
Lovely, Spacious Home
We spent Thanksgiving in Rhode Island this year. We wanted to rent a house big and comfortable enough to host a modest dinner with a few guests. This property exceeded every expectation we had. The kitchen was a dream for cooking, the living room with a fireplace was comfortable and cozy. Even on a cold day when beach and swimming activities weren’t at all an option, the view was gorgeous. The sun rising over the water each morning was so beautiful. We couldn’t stop thinking about how great the house must be in the summer, with windows open and meals on the spacious porches. With four bedrooms, there is plenty of sleeping space for a big family - and with two living rooms and three full baths (plus one half), you don’t trip over each other.
A big selling point of this home for us was the accessibility. My nephew uses a wheelchair and we wanted to be able to invite him over without any stress. Sandy made sure to have the ramp in place from the garage prior to our arrival, and the elevator was great. The doorways are wide and the floor plan is open enough that my nephew had no trouble navigating around. It’s so hard to find a rental that is truly accessible! But this home fit the bill.
You won’t regret this one. I’d love to come back during the summer sometime.
We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay, Stacy. We are especially grateful to a prior renter who designed the ramps which we happily paid for, so your nephew could come enjoy his family conveniently. And thanks for taking such excellent care of our beloved house. We would love to have you back any time.
Our quiet beach house is only half an hour away from historic Mystic Seaport and Mystic Acquarium to the south, and the luxuries and shopping of Newport, RI to the north. Biking on level roads is excellent. Buy fresh lobsters straight off the fishing boats just 20 minutes away at Point Judith.
