The Cabbage on Olive Street, overlooking Hayden Brook

The Cabbage has a special place in the hearts of generations of Lakewood folk, as you can see by the many signatures of past/present actors & techies upon the walls!

Sitting up in the woods on the hilly side of Olive Street, overlooking the brook, this cabin/cottage is a rustic & simple dwelling, consisting of a well sized main room with dining table and futon, a small kitchen, a bathroom with shower, and accessable by ladder, a fun sleeping loft with a full sized mattress/boxspring on one side and a full+ sized sleeping mat on the other.

The space behind the Cabbage has a propane grill, a small fire pit, and lawn chairs overlooking the brook and an eagle nest! Beyond the beautiful large pine tree in the front of the building is a larger fire pit where occasional Lakewood community bonfires take place. The community Olive Street bridge over Hayden Brook makes for a very short and pleasant walk to Lakewood Theater, Restaurant, and Lake Wesserunsett. Pets are allowed at the Cabbage with security deposit.

Lovely Rustic Cabin

I absolutely loved spending time here! It brought me right back to my childhood growing up near Embden Lake, spending summers in the lakeside cabins. The amenities were all great, exactly as advertised. I will say it's a little tricky finding it in the dark! I'm looking forward to my next trip to Maine so that I can stay here again!

Rustic Cabin - so cute.

We enjoyed our stay at The Cabbage. The Host is very accommodating. Someone had recently given a bad review. We didn't experience any of the things they had. The cabin is old with some modern updates, mostly in the bathroom and the sleeping loft. It's extremely cute. It's a seasonal camp/cabin. Go expecting a rustic Maine cabin experience and you will fully enjoy your stay at the Cabbage.

Live your hermit dream!!! Stay in a cabin!!!

If you, dear reader, and I have anything in common, then you're reading this at 1am after a long work day and you've reached this listing by googling "places to stay in Maine under $100." You're also probably saying to yourself "What a quaint little cabin in the heart of Stephen King country! I wonder if anything Stephen King-related would happen to me if I stayed there?" Dear reader, let me put your fears to rest: book the dang cabin!!! I went here on my first solo vacation and could not have had a better time. The pictures do not do it justice. I spent five nights scaring myself senseless by reading Edgar Allen Poe in the loft and it was delightful. The heater worked like a dream, the hot water stayed hot, the full kitchen allowed me to drink my bodyweight in soup and the place felt like home. The property manager even came by before I arrived to put the lights and the heat on. So nice! She was quick to answer questions and the place was so thoughtfully arranged. Ignore that two star review complaining about spiderwebs. It's a freakin cabin. If you don't like nature, stay in a Marriott. I'm not getting paid to write this, I genuinely had a great time.

Needs a deep clean

The cabbage was just ok, it was dirty and full of cobwebs and spiders. All the windows sills were covered in cobwebs especially in the bathroom and had dirt and dead bugs everywhere. The one meal I cooked at the cabbage I had to clean the pan and some of the utensils before use as old food was stuck on. If I had known that the sleeping loft was so small and required you to hunch over to move around I never would of chosen this place to stay, also the listing never mentioned the stair/ ladder used to get up to the sleeping loft which is extremely dangerous (I almost fell twice coming down). If you are elderly or have limited mobility issues you will never be able to go up and down those stairs, there is also no railing. I was also woken up two mornings in a row to what sounded like scratching on the wall directly behind the bed. I was so shocked by all the positive reviews which is what I based my booking off of because personally I was not impressed. The second you walk through the door you are met by an awful odor I’m not sure if it’s mold or what but it’s not pleasant. I understand that the building itself is very old and supposed to be rustic which is what my husband and I were looking for but there is a difference between rustic and dirty/ not well maintained. I hate to be the only person to give a bad review but this is my honest opinion of the cabbage and if I had known the condition of the place I wouldn’t of booked it, we ended up leaving a day earlier than expected.

It is regretable that some of these thoughts where not communicated to me when you arrived, as I would have moved you to a less rustic cabin with more suitable to you sleeping space, and address cleaning concerns. A ladder to the loft I believed to be an assumed access, but at your suggestion I will now include it in the description. The ceiling height also implied, and clearly shown in the photos on the listing. The fold out doubled sized futon in the livingroom is provided for those who may not wish to stay in the loft. and many have chossen that option. Old cabins often have a musty smell due to old wood, which may have been exagerated in the rainy weather. Usually running the air conditioner, even on just the dehumidifer setting, will clear that up swiftly. I assure you there is no mold inside the cabin. Dead bugs on the window sills can be the cycles of nature, and though decessed bugs may have been removed at cleaning the previous day, others may have met their peace by check-in 2pm the next day. Normally I would not think a large number. Spiders too spin webs overnight and they usually help keep the window sills fairly clear actually, but I admit that there is a difference between an active spider web and a old cobweb, and those are removed before collecting dust. With the exception of our wood spider who has an impressive home outside one of the windows, which some guests have found quite entertaining to watch!

Growing up in the late 1970's within walking distance from here, I was frequently entertained by enchanting stories about Lakewood Theater by my neighbor Libby, daughter of Herbert Swett. Such wonderful history! To me the place was magical. Years later I introduced my son to the theater's Young Performers Camp, and then since he hit the main stage in 2012 he's been at Lakewood every summer since! (except 2020) These grounds are home.

We began restoring camps & cottages on Olive Street in 2019 with the goal to make the spaces available to Lakewood Theater actors, techies, and those employed by the Lakewood Resturant as well. Now, as schedule may allow, we are happy to offer stays to others who are als looking to capture a bit of the past!

Olive Street, as it sits 'across the brook' from the theater, was considered in Lakewood's hey day, to be the wild side! One of the larger camps is actually the old dance hall/speakeasy where it is said that some actors often gathered during prohibition.

The buildings that are part of our little On Olive Street collection were built in the late 1800s to early 1900s. Though some renovations have been done and modern conveniences added, they are all simple dwellings and hold a certain charm along with their history.

This area has more than Lakewood Theater & Restaurant to enjoy nearby, with Hayden Brook flowing past all but one of our rentable cabins - and for that one and others it doesn't, it is just steps away! Access to Wesserunset Lake is also a short stroll across the foot bridge, and the Golf Course is simply a slightly further walk!

この宿泊施設の特徴

History, a throw back to a simpiler time, and a very family friendly neighborhood! Olive Street is a private and small loop of mostly seasonal cottages and flower gardens, and the sound of the brook trickling by.
