Lakewood is a suburb 10 minutes west of Downtown Denver and it's conveniently located on your way out to the mountains, you'll be on I-70 in 5 minutes.
It's highly recommended to have a car to get anywhere, however, you'll appreciate how close everything is. If you're not driving, Uber is relatively cheap, the nearest public transportation is the lightrail and it's a 20-minute walk but will connect you with anywhere in the Denver Metro, including Denver International Airport.
