About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6-8)

A millions shades of green fill your eyes as they follow the gentle rise of the rolling fields, forest and streams from the generous lawns that surround Potter's House in New London.

The three-bedroom summerhouse is a perfect spot for a family gathering with a renovated farm house to yourselves. Lots of room for family activities inside and out with two living rooms, a dining room and eat-in kitchen. An acre of lawn surrounding the house provides plenty of room to make yourself at home.

Once operated as a country inn/tourist home, the house it is now available for rental by the week during the summer as a self-catering operation. Saturday is our change-over day. We rent for shorter periods in May, June, September and October.

Located in a creative village, you can stroll over to Village Pottery our family shop to visit the potters at work next door; founded by Daphne in 1973, there are now four of us in the family making pottery. You guessed it - that is how Potter's House got its name. As well you can partake in culinary adventures within the village at The Table - Culinary Studio, and explore the craft work known as Roberta Originals at the shop called Summer House.

And if you haven't worked up an appetite yet within the village there is the historic Birthplace of L.M. Montgomery, the esteemed author of the Anne of Green Gables series, which is open daily as well as Gallery 18 that offers a full line of art, antique prints and collectible books.

Did someone mention food? You might consider slipping into the Bluewinds Tea Room for a refreshing break or a full meal. As well Sou'West Bar & Grill is an excellent seafood restaurant located on the New London harbour wharf. Located at the point the South West River meets New London Bay their name is a play on the location name, as well as a tip of the hat to their wide ranging culinary style. Their deck on the edge of the bay is a favourite destination.

Potter's House is fully licensed and inspected by the provincial government as a vacation rental property.

About Ian Scott

As artisans we fell in love with the area in the 1970's and have operated our pottery business in the village ever since. We are pleased to operate a family business which now includes two of our children as well.

Ian Scott purchased this house in 1994

Why Ian Scott chose Anne's Land

Spenting our summers in the area for over 40 years we knew what a great location the area is for families to enjoy a vacation. Exploring the area with our three children and now our grandchildren continues to show us great places to discover nearby. When the chance to purchase Potter's House arose as neighbours retired as innkeepers we jumped at the chance to carry on their tradition of hospitality - hoping that what had operated as a small inn would make the perfect summerhouse for visitors looking for a location to relax and enjoy. While the prior owners provided three cooked meals a day to their guests we chose to renovate both the house and the approach going with the popular self-catering style where people have the house to themselves to relax and enjoy. A Saturday-to-Saturday operation during July and August we also accept shorter bookings in the shoulder season.

When there is time to slip away from pottery making, or at the end of the day - the beach is where we tend to head for a hike, or just to relax. Watching the sunset over the water is always a special treat. With beaches in all directions, New London is a perfect base to explore the best of what Prince Edward Island has to offer.

If you enjoy independent travel and exploring new areas, then this would be a good spot to consider for enjoying a Prince Edward Island vacation. In the heart of the north shore just minutes from the national park at Cavendish and easy access to the Confederation Trail (hiking & cycling Island wide) there are many musical events like the Indian River Festival providing lots of cultural opportunities in the area. New London is a farming and fishing area rich with the best of what PEI has to offer in fresh food, scenery and a creative local community.

What makes this house unique

With a fresh coffee in hand, heading to the big lawn chairs, the eye rises to see a hawk soar over the meadow. Whether it is the northern harrier in the meadow or an ospey family nesting near the harbour or the bald eagles over the bay - this area is rich with nature and the refreshment of the nearby seaside environment.

As the late afternoon arrives and the whiff of the BBQ awakens your senses to an awaited meal - tonight it is surf and turf - with the freshest lobster in the world straight from the wharf along with mussels. Last night it was salmon from the same market with a few oysters to start the meal.

As the night falls and the kids tire from playing soccer and frisbee on the big lawn at the back, the shout of 'campfire tonight' resounds and the family gathers at the fire pit to watch the flames grow and enjoy time together around the flickering light of the warming fire, while the distant glow of the sun sets beyond the horizon. As the night draws to a close and family think about heading in, "I have never seen so many stars in all my life," is a common reaction. The wide night sky and a rising moon sets a lovely tone to the end of the day at Potter's House.

Exploring the whole area is always refreshing, the fishing villages and beaches, the cycling and hiking trails, the golf courses and Prince Edward Island National Park just minutes away make this area a popular location. Potter's House is a restful summerhouse in the middle of one of the top vacation areas on Canada's east coast.

Beautiful beaches are just minutes away by car, as well as all the amenities a traveller might need are minutes away in nearby Cavendish. Kensington in the other direction provides even a fuller range of services.

Kindred spirit

When you have a bunch of 30-something females fighting over rooms you know that you've scored a gem.

At 146 years old, Potter's House is in pretty good shape. Polished timber floors, centralised heating, gabled wallpapered rooms, soft willowy curtains, shingled walls in bright yellow, breathtaking views and of course wifi. The house also has an equipped kitchen with a fridge, toaster, microwave, stove etc. Linens are aplenty.

Suzanne, our host, who also works at the Village Pottery next door (btw, 10% discount for renters) was so helpful and gave us excellent local tips around the island.

Its idyllic location is perfect for a day's trip per touring region (Points East, North Cape, Green Gables Shore & Red Sands Shore) and if you are an Anne Of Green Gables fan it only takes less than 10 mins by car to get to all the associated attractions. It's close to the French Village and is only 40 mins away from Charlottetown- close enough for you to catch a musical (Anne & Gilbert is a MUST SEE) and back.

By the way, if you're lucky you may see a fox or two nearby. We didn't. I guess it looks like we will had to come back......

Old fashioned charm

  • 5 of 5

My two teenage girls and I were visiting PEI for an "Anne trip" and this was the perfect home base for our stay. The fact that the house was from the same time period and had gable rooms just added to the excitement for my girls. It was in a great location for all we wanted to see and the hosts were helpful and friendly. The house had all we needed and more. It would be a great place for a larger family as well. The views were beautiful and we wished the weather was a little warmer to enjoy the wonderful yard.

Owner's Response: Good to hear the girls enjoyed staying in a heritage home from the Anne of Green Gables era. In New London we are pleased to know that the writing of Lucy Maud Montgomery (who was born a few doors away) still speaks to a new generation of readers.

Old time comfort plus beauty

  • 5 of 5

Relaxed and comfortable, we found Potter’s House to be a lovely, older home that is furnished and maintained in the style of an informal country place. It is full of low-key charm. Like taking a step back in time. The kitchen is bright, looking out onto never-ending greenery and is equipped with modern fridge, stove, coffee-maker, etc., plus everything needed for steaming up your own lobsters and mussels. The two downstairs living rooms are great. Especially for larger family groups which can easily split into reading or chatting in one area with the other turned over to movies/tv. We also found the “parlour” to be helpful during an especially large family dinner gathering when the younger set gathered around the coffee table while the older set sat around the nearby dining table. Comfortable, clean beds upstairs. Great laundry facilities. Best of all, we loved the large area of lawn and trees that surround the place. Really nice for sitting out, enjoying the view, reading, picnics, whatever. The country-side is flat out gorgeous. Cavendish is not far away. Our son-in-law enjoyed the nearby golf course. Overall, for us, a great place to unwind!

Potter's House

This is an older property and thus has old infrasturture ie. plumbing, electrical, etc. We used it as a family gathering spot and it sherved that purpose well being close to amenities in Cavendish. The owners were nice and helpful when called upon. Overall a clean and commfortable place to stay.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay. The electrical panel was fully replaced later in August 2012. We are pleased to have our property inspected and rated under the Canada Select system, operated in PEI, through Quality Tourism Services. Upgrades are made annually to meet those high standards, and to ensure that this property meets modern standards for tourist amenities.

Notes:
Designed for groups or families who enjoy the self-catering approach to travel, the house is equipped to handle meal preparation and has lots of room to relax both inside and out. Once operated as a small country inn, it was renovated into a summerhouse with lots of room for family groups or couples looking for privacy, but close to all the advantages of the resort communities nearby. Minutes from public beaches and the PEI National Park at Cavendish provides a great base for activities in the whole coastal area, yet removed from the commercial district at the edge of the park.
