Cozy Stone Cottage at Lake James and Linville Gorge. Pet friendly!
Our stone cottage, located at the foot of the Linville Gorge was built in another era. We've lovingly updated it creating a comfortable modern home keeping all its charm! Walk out the door to hike some of the most scenic well connected trails in NC. Pickle ball close-by. Come home to a fully stocked kitchen to cook great meals. Enjoy a cozy fireplace. Significant discount for monthly stays. $20 add’l cleaning fee for stays >7 days. Pets welcome. 1 pet is $60 and 2 pay $100 to stay.
The space Our home was constructed in the late 1940s as a one room stone cottage. Rooms were added on over time. In 2008 we purchased it and did a major renovation, opening it up to family, friends and guests. The inside is mostly stone and wood, a grounding and comforting retreat from a restless world. Two wonderful beds with great mattresses (a queen and a double). We have a cot with a foam mattress for your 5th guest.
The cottage is rustic but comfortable with welcoming wood floors, blackout curtains for a good night's sleep and a new heating/cooling system installed in 2022. Because our interior walls are stone, you may see an occasional bug but regular extermination keeps this to a minimum. Door openings into bedrooms are a bit low - so if you are 6' tall, you will need to duck your head. Many people love this space, but if you are looking for a hotel feel, it is probably best to look for a hotel!
We are so happy to have speedy reliable internet provided by the Starlink satellite system. So, yes, you can work from the cottage!
Guest access Check out time is 11 am. Check in time is 4 pm.
You will have access to the whole cottage, but for one owners closet.

The cabin was exactly as described. We enjoyed the quiet retreat and sitting outside listening to the river and birds. Furniture and beds were very comfy. It was perfect for us!

Truly a cottage feel, great common area with fireplace, river view from deck outside was awesome. Several areas to choose from to relax in and out of cottage. Walking distance to lake, river, and trails. Great experience, will be going back for sure!
A nice "real" cabin. Stocked appropriately with everything and we really enjoyed our stay. One suggestion is to completely extinguish the pilot light on the heater in the large room in the summertime to keep that room cooler.

Hi Jim,
So glad you enjoyed your stay. You are welcome back anytime!
What is not to love about this adorable historic stone cottage! Cute and immaculate—probably the cleanest pet-friendly rental we’ve ever seen. This sweet cottage is situated in a small lake community who share a private lane. Neighbors on both sides were super-friendly and helpful. They even remembered our dog’s name and offered usage of their kayaks!
Once inside, the cottage was quiet and comfortable. Its central location made day trips easy too. There is so much to do within a 50-mile radius of this community. Thank you for a great weekend!
Where to begin ~ We really enjoyed our time spent in this lovely cottage. The hosts were a pleasure to communicate with and we enjoyed meeting the caretaker. She is just lovely. The cottage was so sparkling clean.
We had plenty of room to spread out, both indoors and outside. Loved the kitchen table with the chalkboard paint top, it encouraged many domino marathons and lots of silly doodling!
The water pressure is great in the roomy shower.
Beds and linens were lovely. There was a bevy of reading material, along with lots of games in house. I do have to mention just how quiet all the ceiling fans are, not a sound! Thank you for sharing your slice of paradise at Lake James!
P.S. you have the best wifi password! …and yes every night!

Great location but not very clean
Location is great but didn't expect the cabin to be so run down and unclean. If you have asthma or allergies please be warned that this property has a mold/mildew problem.
I get that the cabin is old but it is definitely not maintained. I personally had to clean layers of dust off the ceiling fan in the kitchen, scrub the shower curtain liner and the tea kettle had layers of brown gunk built up at the bottom and was unusable. The bottom of the oven was also dirty and looked like it has never been cleaned.
Both sofas suck you in like a sand trap and all cushions worn out to the point where you can feel the springs of the sofa while you sit.
Outside patio umbrella was broken and wouldn't open, kitchen sink faucet was broken and sprayed out water and leaked at the base.
Bathroom drawers we unusable as they were filled with little various bottles of expired personal care items that I am assuming were left behind by previous guests including a used razor with someone's hair still in it.
Front door needs to replaced in general and had to position it just right for the deadbolt to actually work.
Overall very disappointed but glad we could at least enjoy what the location offered.

Sarah,
Thank you for your feedback. I wish you had reached out during your stay so we could have had our cleaner go back and address some of these issues. You should never have to clean anything yourself! We will definitely pay more attention to these things in the future. As you noted, it is an older cabin and sometimes the front door squeaks.
I am sorry you did not like the couches. Many people loved them and ask where we got them. Unfortunately, they were both destroyed in the recent hurricane.
Thank you again for your feedback.

We love being near one of the cleanest lakes in North Carolina, true joy to swim and kayak in the summer. At the same time we are in the midst of some of the best most scenic well connected hiking trails in the state - accessible by foot from the cottage! We have wonderful welcoming neighbors. Plus we are only 30 minutes from Morganton with great grocery stores, pubs, restaurants and artist studios. Just a wonderful location.
