About the property

Gorgeous 3 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, Library, Sun Room, 3 Terraces, Outdoor Hot Tu

Spectacular townhouse in Historic East Village that was formerly a synagogue! One of the city's last tenement Shuls, now a chic landmarked building, this former synagogue was brilliantly transformed into a magnificent home in 2005 by world-famous designers from the Ian Shrager Hotels – earning recognition in Architectural Record for its extraordinary transformation, and attracting the likes of press, politicians and entertainment figures. Yours to rent is the exquisite result of their top-of-the-line gut renovation: an immaculately-designed, 3 bedroom (possible 4), 2.5 bath fourplex that boasts 3 wonderful outdoor terraces, the finest finishes and fixtures, plus the most advanced automated central audio/visual, lighting, HVAC and integrated security systems. Other distinctive features that make this sun-drenched residence such a unique work of art are its custom-made windows that are exact replicas of when the building was a synagogue (including the Star of David!), and luxurious touches that include Brazilian hardwood cherry floors, hand-poured Brazililan glass mosaic tiles by Vidrotil, beautiful Wenge wood paneling, radiant floor heating, floor-to-ceiling steel cased windows and doors (the list goes on).

Entertaining is anyone's dream in the dramatic living area with 22' cathedral ceilings, floor-to-ceiling walls of restored and repointed exposed brick (east) and Wenge wood paneling (west), and a Cantilever balcony with a built-in projector for showcasing art. The ultimate open chef's kitchen wows you with its Italian granite counters, 20' island, floor-to-ceiling custom-built Wenge cabinets, Thermadore double ovens and separate cook top with grill, Sub-Zero main refrigerator plus 2 extra fridges in the island, Bosch dishwasher and separate Fisher Paykel double-drawer dishwasher, built-in temperature/humidity-controlled wine cooler. From the elegant dining area with the original restored 19th Century backlit Star of David sits a rear dining terrace beyond a wall of glass and steel windows and doors.

On the 3rd level, relax in the gorgeous library with custom-built floor-to-ceiling Wenge wood bookshelves, an Italian marble fireplace and a wet sink/wet bar with plumbing. Two guest bedrooms with custom wall-size closets and built-in stereo speakers ensure comfort and privacy. The 4th story presents a special floor-to-ceiling glass hallway and secluded master bedroom with a custom-built working fireplace, huge walk-in closet, and opulent master bath with an oversized Jacuzzi tub, walk-in shower with steam unit, rain shower, waterfall and separate hand-held shower. Enjoy quiet time on the delightful terrace off the master with a hot tub for 8, or ascend the glass stairs to the top floor sun-drenched lounge/media room (possible 4th bedroom) and terrace that also has Ipe wood floors and planters, copper rainspouts, a custom sound system and security cameras. 3235 interior sf and 982 exterior sf. Live-in caretaker and housekeeper provided on-site in separate apartment.

Rock stars and movie stars have requested this home in the past, many movies have requested to shoot in this home. Now for the first the owners are allowing certain select clients to rent this home.

Memorable wedding

  • 5 of 5

Martin was a very gracious and helpful host. The house was everything we thought it would be and more. We had a very intimate wedding ceremony and reception in this incredible former synagogue. We are already planning to rent for our 10 year wedding anniversary. If you are looking for an unforgettable NYC experience you will not be disappointed.

A perfect New York wedding

  • 5 of 5

This place is beautiful from street entry to rooftop terrace. It was absolutely perfect for my intimate 20 person wedding. Our ceremony was under the exquisite tall Windows and our procession down the glass encased stairway. Catering was right at the full 12 person dining table and bar and appetizers in the modern elegantly lit kitchen. Literal perfection. Plenty of rooms to get ready. A massive closet in the master to hold all of my and my girlfriends dresses while we got ready. Plenty of bathrooms and an unheard of amount of outdoor space. After wedding party in the gorgeous hot tub and drinks on the terrace. A comfortable sleep in the clean comfortable bed with fresh linens and towels. It was a dream.... But the best part: Martin. Martin, the owner, was so accommodating, helpful, kind, and reliable. I would recommend this space to any and everyone for an event or a getaway. I couldn't have asked for a better experience.

Convenient location, and great water pressure ;)

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our long stay here at Martin's. There's plenty of space and my favorite places are the master bathroom, the jacuzzi and the living room. But that's only because we didn't stay even longer to enjoy the super beautiful terrace on the very top. The master bath has great water pressure and 3 showerheads (yes 3!!) -- and this is really important to me. A low water pressure just ruins everything in my book, lol... The jacuzzi was outdoor and is truly a luxury to be able to hang out in it in the evening.

The location is unbeatable; very close to restaurants and cafes that we like. The surrounding area feels safe as well.

There was Laura who is available through text/call in case anything goes wrong or if we needed something, so that was very helpful and appreciated.

The airbeds -- they turned out to be much more comfortable than we expected! There were also washer and dryer that were working properly and we utilized them. The AC was working properly as well so that's great for summer! Lots of sun through the whole unit. It's also very quiet if the windows are shut. The unit wasn't that clean on the first day, but we had a housekeeper come and Voila - good as new. There weren't any pests (yes we've seen rodent and roaches in other luxury rentals...); just ants so put those sugary stuff in the fridge!

The next time we would love to know how to use the TVs and microwave! :)

Incredible East Village get away

  • 5 of 5

We visit New York on a regular basis and usually stay in mid town. But we were looking for more of a neighborhood, for our Xmas visit and fell in love with this Shul turned into a magnificent home, which provided a large and interesting space to spend a week in. The owner has done an incredible job of renovating this space in the heart of the East Village. The house is beautifully maintained, and the pictures on the site do not do it justice. The kitchen is very well equipped and huge, and easy to cook in, and the dining room is vast. The beds are very comfortable. The house easily sleeps 7-8. Victoria, who manages the property, was extremely helpful and always accessible. The neighborhood is great - wonderful restaurants (all the recommendations were delicious and friendly - Lavagna , and Mogador especially), great little parks, interesting stores. We were visiting with a 7 year old who loved the neighborhood. We would definitely recommend this place and are already planning our next trip.

3 Star Fumbled on Delivery w/a 5 Star local &Space

  • 3 of 5

The overall description of the property was accurate regarding location and layout. It was a cool spot, an architectural gem and overall great layout. I loved the space and decks. The owner was accessible and answered all of my questions prior to arrival. He also was great about suggestions near by for attractions and restaurants. We had the space for our family to gather for a few days to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday in April. The size of the space and location were 5 star.

The very disappointing fact was the property was not clean and for the priced we had several significant issues. For example, hair was in the tubs and sink and the owners assistance came back to clean again when I called. The owner had quite a waver to sign and threaten if we spilled anything on certain furniture but there were broken items and stains on all the dining room chairs. There were ants in our food left on the kitchen island, the hot tub did not work nor was there water in it. The guest bathtub/shower did not drain properly so my family was showing with backed up water. I will note when I first entered the property and it was not clean the owner assistant attempted to clean the hair and issues in the bathrooms. The white towels were old, rough and not so white. The owner immediately had the towels replaced before my guests (family) arrived. I really appreciated that.

It would have made all the difference in the world if the owner would have made a concession toward the $13K I paid given the hot tub did not function and the guest bath was backed up the entire time. He made no attempt to gesture a small amount back for the inconvenience not to mention the food I had to throw out due to ants. All of this was told to his assistant. No apologies on the owners part. He did mention that we broke one wine glass though and asked what happened. Simple gestures go a long way.

WOW! this place is sublime.

  • 5 of 5

Tucked away on a quiet side street just half a block from the East Village excitement and Tompkins Sq Park. This was the nicest place we have ever stayed and its location is nothing short of fantastic. (The East Village is more glam than grit these days) Unlike the noise and density of the other parts of the city, we slept in comfort and quiet with the windows opened on a cool fall night. The modern conversion of this former synagogue into a spacious home reminded me of the Mandarin Oriental in Prague. Everything is sleek and comfortable yet you can see the evidence of its former life. This place is dialed in for entertaining with its huge kitchen and dining space overlooking one of many balconies. We had a dinner party for 15 and it was the highlight of the trip. The only bad thing about this house is you may be tempted to stay in and not see the city! When you do you can walk to so many great places to dine and shop. Short walks to Soho or Union Square or the West Village. After a day of hustle and bustle in the city it was always great to return here to the rooftop hot tub. There is person available to help or assist with everything as well, which was super convenient. We will be back!

Notes:
And finally with respect to restaurants in the neighborhood: Note this neighborhood very casual, if someone is wearing a tie they are from another neighborhood. Mogador — french morrocan bistro, great tagines, open late and always busy MY FAVORITE. On St Marks (which is same as 8th St) on other side of Tompkins Park between A and 1st Ave Tuome — Just opened last fall. Foody place with a chef who came from 11 Madison park and got great review in NY Times. Very interesting food, just check the review: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/05/dining/restaurant-review-tuome-in-the-east-village.html GG’s — great for pizzas and more really good. On 5th St between A and B Lavagna — Mediteranian, Italian, nice on 5th between B and A and tablecloths, a rarity in the neighborhood SUPPER — on 2nd St and Ave A Italian, very fresh and great wine list and really cute place I eat there once a week. Cash Only Pylos — Greek and great on 7th St between Ave A and 1st Ave You can’t go w
