Guests can relax in the three season sunroom with a card/billiard table that has a top that flips to a dining table. Two doors lead to the river-side deck/grill and the covered back porch.
An unforgettable place to gather is in front of the wood-burning fireplace, which is surrounded by some rocks we gathered from the shoreline. Infloor heating makes the space extra cozy.

Let us welcome you to Northern Lights Retreat; this magical property will be your place to unwind and unplug. This Lake Superior waterfront home is bordered by a designated trout stream and enveloped by nature. The interior of the home is rustic and comfortable. Guests are surrounded by wood and windows; a focus on the beautiful force of nature around you. There is strong Wi-Fi too!

☆ We require guests to sign a rental agreement which will be sent after booking. This agreement must be read, signed and returned within 48 hours or cancellation for a full refund can be requested within 48 hours. Please read cancellation policy.

☆ The neighboring "Skipping Stone" studio cabin can also be rented for 4 additional guest.

☆ No dirt bikes, ATVs or tents allowed on the property.

☆ 15% discount when booking 7 days or more.

☆ We hope you can enjoy the outdoor hot tub! Because we are near two bodies of water, we chose a natural wood-fired hot tub that does not contain chemicals and can be safely drained. If guests chose to use this amenity, they will fill the tub with the hose and then start a fire to get to the optimal temperature. The first preparation will take some effort and 4-6 hours to get hot, but the resulting experience of soaking under the starts, next to the lake, is truly magical. There are no jets; you will just hear the crackling of the fire and waves on the shore. Some people will cold plunge in the Lake (or snow) and return to the hot tub. This amenity is NOT available January 1st-April 1st.

☆ No more than eight guests and no more than two cars allowed on the property. Parties or events are prohibited.

☆ Children must be monitored closely. The shoreline of the lake and river and the hot tub are not fenced.

☆ Our water does go through UV and triple filtration, but drinking water will be supplied to comply with the Cook County regulations regarding homes that draw water from Lake Superior.

☆ There is a one time pet fee of $75 for up to two dogs that goes to our cleaner; please no cats or other animals. Additional fees as noted in rental contract regarding pet waste left outside or evidence of dogs on the beds. Dogs must be leashed at all times.

☆ There is NO air-conditioning in the cabin. The lake breeze and provided fans are almost always enough to keep comfortable.

☆ We are a cabin in the forest and next to two bodies of water. While we do have pest control monitor our home, there are mosquitos and flies in the summer, some months are worse than others, so bringing bug spray is recommended. On the property we have spotted moose, wolves, bears, otters, deer, fox, lynx and coyotes; please respect the wildlife by keeping all food and garbage indoors.

☆ Please let us know if you have an electric vehicle. We do not have an EV hook-up, but we will advise you of options.

☆ There may be other guests staying at the cabin on the other side of the property; this studio cabin only shares the main driveway, it has its own private parking/fire pit/lake shoreline.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

The view is fantastic, and house was comfortable for 6 adults. The homemade cinnamon rolls from the little store in Hovland made the stay perfect.

We were a group of 5 girlfriends on an annual trip! This cozy and clean cabin worked well for us to hangout together, chill, make meals, and rest up comfortably! Only a short drive to Grand Marais, State Parks, beaches and lots of trails available to checkout when we wanted to explore the area or dine out occasionally. Exactly as described, right on the water, with a spectacular view!

Amazing home, well cared for and thought out. Everything you would need. Owners are extremely thoughtful and easy to communicate with. Easy check in and check out process. Easy access to so much to do around the area. We were a group of 7 who were 9-75. All enjoyed the time together.

It was the best view in the area - the hot tub was the highlight at the end of the day after hiking - takes a little work (get the driftwood from the beach to get the fire started) but easy to figure out. Tiffany was very attentive throughout the trip. We will be back!

Fabulous north shore get away

What a beautiful spot. Everything was as described in the listing, plus the amenities they provided were wonderful - well stocked kitchen, towels to use with the hot tub, lots of games for kids and adults, and on and on. Great communication, too. I thought the wood fired hot tub might feel like a chore, but it didn't - we used it a ton and loved it. Such a special place, right on the lake and the river. We loved it and hope to be back.

“Superior” place to stay

This property was not only gorgeous but spotless! It is so well stocked I can’t imagine what you would need that it didn’t have. The view of the lake was picture perfect. Rockers on the front porch — became our favorite place We will certainly stay here again.

We loved it!

We had a lovely stay. The home is thoughtfully appointed with everything we needed. It has comfortable beds and furnishings, a well stocked kitchen, and comfortable common areas. The kids also loved the wood fired hot tub. The owners are very responsive and welcoming and the view was perfect. Thank you so much for sharing your home with us!

Spectacular experience

If you’re looking for a relaxing experience up the north shore, look no more! Truly, our family needed a place to congregate since most of us live out of state and it was very accommodating. It has all the bells and whistles in the kitchen from sharp fabulous knives to a Darth Vader toaster…lol. The enclosed porch has a game table to a sofa that faces Lake Superior. Every night we enjoyed chatting by the fire place with enough room for all 7 of us. They have views from every aspect of their adorable cabin. When I tell you we were pleasantly surprised when we entered our code to enter the “barn” looking cabin is an understatement. Decorated very lovely and so very relaxing. Thank you for a wonderful experience, and we hope to return again.

What makes this property unique

This is a beautiful retreat with a lot of history. If you walk down the road, you will find the Hovland Dock. This vintage commercial concrete dock was built in 1905 and brought passengers and cargo from Duluth before there were roads; passengers would then walk to this property where a boarding house and store stood. This property was settled by Ole Brunes and Hovland was named after his place of origin in Norway.

On the property you can walk/snowshoe the trails, skip rocks, enjoy the outdoor fire pit and a wood-fired hot tub. Anglers can fish in the designated trout stream. Adventure seekers can launch your own SUP or canoe on a calm day, or even wade in the river or lake for a chilly swim.

There is no air-conditioning in the cabin. The provided fans, and the cool Lake breeze, are almost always enough to stay cool.

EV car charging is not possible at this time, so please check with us regarding this before booking.
