Elba Island Hideaway with Spectacular Mediterranean Views

Bedrooms 4
Space 1,937 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

4 Bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms, sleeps 9

This four bedroom, three full bathroom rustic house sleeps nine and is located on the westernmost point of Elba. This simple, unadorned hideaway is situated in one of the wildest and more undeveloped areas of the island, in a locale known as Campo Lo Feno -- between the charming medieval village of Marciana and the larger bustling town of Marina di Campo, full of nightlife.

Eat caprese and drink the local wine "Aleatico" al fresco at the granite table with a dramatic view of the Mediterranean, Corsica and the island of Capraia. Dinner is especially beautiful as the sunsets are truly breathtaking and are different every evening.

Mediterranean pine, rosemary, and oleander surround and shade the house. Because there is no Wi-Fi service or cell phone reception at the house (though it can be had at local establishments a few minutes away in Chiessi), the Pink House is truly a place for those who wish to unplug, unwind, and reconnect to a simpler and less stressful way of life.

The house has two bedrooms upstairs with air conditioning in each room, and two downstairs. There are very large custom closets with built in dressers in each room. There are three bathrooms, one upstairs and two downstairs—one with a washing machine, and the other accessible from outside of the house, great for a shower after being at the beach all day!

The main living room has a wood burning stove, and doubles as the dining room and kitchen. But as the weather is always wonderful in Spring and Summer, most time is spent outside overlooking the sea.

Two picturesque villages, Chiessi and Colle d'Orano (both 5 minutes away by car), have rock cliff beaches and there are many sand and rock beaches all around the island.

About us: Our family has been going to the house every July and/or August since 1975 and truly wish we could visit more often. We've shared our home for many years with friends and through word-of-mouth but now feel that more people should enjoy this exquisite place that has meant everything to us for four generations.

About Owner

An Italian family that has lived and travelled all over the world.

Owner purchased this house in 1975

Why Owner chose Marciana

We chose our house in Campo Lo Feno on Elba because it's a beautiful, remote, and untamed part of the island preserved from development and is one of the least crowded parts of the island, even in summer. While private, it is still a short drive to nightlife and great restaurants - the best of both worlds on vacation.

What makes this house unique

Complete peace and relaxation, morning coffee while looking out at the vast blue Mediterranean sea, lunch on the side of the house under the pine trees, watching millions of stars at night...

Beautiful Location, Great Sunsets, Pure Relaxation

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the stay in this beautiful house and had a great family get together. The house is located in the most beautiful part of the Island with incredible views and sunsets and provides pure relaxation. We discovered the area with our bikes, on hiking trails and enjoyed the nice beaches closed by. We will definitely come back for another perfect vacation in the Elba pink house on our favorite island Elba!

The perfect retreat for family and friends

  • 5 of 5

As has already been said this is a place for those who want a break from the stress, noise and crowds of convenience life and who enjoy being surrounded by the silence and beauty of the natural world. No internet or phone network is not the least of the attractions of the Pink House. The sea view west towards Corsica makes it hard to be anywhere else in the eveings for fear of missing the magnificent sunsets. This was a return visit for us but this year we explored the path down to the sea, not far from the house. It is steep and perilous but all our party ( from 2 years to 62) went up and down daily. Where else can you find a beautiful deserted beach on Elba in August. Just another of the many things that makes this place so special! Thank you again for a wonderful holiday.

Italian experience of a lifetime

  • 5 of 5

PURE Italy. When I think of Italy, I think of our time in Elba. Our week was filled with so many moments that it is hard to decide what to write about. Let me set the stage. Imagine a simple and beautifully built Italian home with a spectacular view of the Mediterranean Sea. A spacious stone veranda with a large simple table. Geraniums and other wild flowers surrounding the space and breezy shade supplied by the tall pine trees.

The house is simple and well made. The bedrooms have huge windows. The beds were clean and comfortable with big windows looking out over the veranda and the sea. The farmhouse kitchen was perfect for preparing our meals. In fact, each meal was memorable because of the view, breeze and sunsets.

We settled into a routine of coffee and breakfast, driving down to the rocks or beaches and swimming or hiking in a state park. Then, going back to the house and having a quiet lunch and reading or relaxing in the shade for the afternoon. We prepared delicious dinners or jumped in the car for a quick ride to one of the local restaurants for some pizza and salad or local cuisine.

Snapshots of our experience.....a wild boar tomato sauce that simmered all day, fresh bread for breakfast, the kids opening the pine cones and procuring pine nuts, watching the sunset and drinking Italian wine long into the night, swimming off of the rocks in the warm sea, drying our bathing suits and towels in the sun, waking up to look out the windows and seeing the sparkling sea.

We found the town and beaches and state parks easily accessible by car. We loved the fact that we were able to return every afternoon to our veranda, with nothing to do but prepare dinner and watch the sun go down while we relaxed at the big table.

All of the elements of perfection were here for us. The view, the veranda, the big table, quiet, sunsets, swimming every day, focusing on our family and friends, enjoying conversation, easy drives to town or swimming or state parks.

An authentic Italian experience that we will never forget.

There were 7 of us arriving from Bologna where we had spent the previous week. Having had a wonderful experience in a villa there, we had similar expectations for Elba. HOW WRONG WE WERE! We had scant, non-informative emails from owner prior to arrival. (She didn't even confirm receipt of wire transfer of our payment) We found our way to the house. It is a one hour, twisty, turny ride from the port, on high cliff roads all the way. This is in a remote location of the island and you cannot walk anywhere! It is on the only road that runs around the island and there are no sidewalks. To walk, you must walk on the road itself and risk being hit by passing cars. We were met by a Danish speaking caretaker who gave us a three minute tour of the house and left. We were on our own to find linens, sheets (beds were NOT made up upon arrival) and anything else we needed during our stay. We needed to search for towels, sheets, blankets, and pillows. The listing stated three bathrooms, we found two. The last day, we noticed there was an outside bathroom, but we never found the key to be able to utilize. The furnishings in the home were sparse. The cabinets in the kitchen were poorly made and handles kept pulling off anytime you opened or closed a drawer or door. One member of our party cut her hand on a handle that pulled off. The walls were dirty and the ceiling was filthy. There were squeaky pipes that screamed every time you turned on water or flushed the toilet. So loud, it

wakes you in the middle of night. As stated, there were 2 usable bathrooms, only only one shower for everyone.

There were no instructions for trash disposal, and we had to figure out to pack out our trash up the hill a quarter of a mile to the communal trash cans. There were no basics left for use in house (spices, oil, dish soap).

There was no phone service despite the listing stating the phone worked. (This was scary as we had no way to reach anyone in case of emergency) There is no Wi-Fi or cell phone service.

There are no gathering places in the home besides the tiny kitchen. Plan to be outside the entire time. There is a lovely view, but bring plenty of bug spray as if you spend any time outside on the patio, you will be bit by the millions of mosquitos that inhabit the area.

To get anywhere, you need to have a car and nerves of steel to drive around the cliff roads. The nearest restaurant is a half kilometer down the road.

This is a tired property with an uninvolved owner! BEWARE

Owner's Response: We're sorry that this traveler didn't enjoy their stay at our house, and we'd like to address some of these concerns. This person is not the person to whom we rented the house. We contacted the person to whom we rented it upon her return and she said that she enjoyed her vacation; she did not have any complaints at the time so we're surprised by this review which appeared months after their stay. Plus, this is first complaint we have ever received as evidenced by the many positive reviews on our page. We gave the renter all the information regarding the house, which is located in a unique location in a protected area of Elba, including the contact information for the (Italian) couple who take care of the house. (We've never had a Danish speaking caretaker). On our page, we explain that this is a rustic house/"cottage", not a mansion/"villa" with all the necessary services, including a working house telephone. It is true that cell phone service is sporadic due to the topography on this part of the island, something that we can't control, and there is also no High-speed Internet, also something we can't control. (Because the house is between two towns, they haven't serviced this part of the island, unfortunately.) That said, both can be had 2km away in Chiessi, down the road. And with respect to the roads: we cannot accept blame for the roads on the island, or the lack of sidewalks, also which we have no control. And contrary to what the reviewer said, there are indeed three bathrooms at the pink house. The third bathroom, which has a shower, is behind a slatted door which is visible from outside the house. The sheets, towels, and pillows are easily accessible in the closets of every room. We don't typically instruct the caretakers to make the beds because, in our experience, every guest likes to choose their own sleeping arrangements (single beds apart = single sheets; single beds together = queen/king size sheets). In the event of any questions or problems of any kind, we leave all our guests the caretaker's number and address and our own; they would have been free to call him, or us. (No one reached out.) We are really sorry that this group of guests were not able to enjoy the beauty of this unique place.

We have been in Elba since 1986, more than 15 times at the same place... Because: It is probably the most beutiful place, surrounded by old wine terrasses and a brilliant view from 150 meters above the see. Korsika is giving a nice silhouette not only during the sun sets and will be kept in your mind for ever. The small villages of Pomonte, Chiessi and Colle d'Orano deliver everything for a short or longer stay and the house and terasse provides all comfort you need, but what counts even most is the location of the property within the natural park!

The owner's service is excellent and is supported by a local family. We have now three generation of our family visted this lovely place. Proved ;-)

With best Regards,

Pure relaxation

  • 5 of 5

My time in Elba was among the happiest of my life, and certainly the most relaxing and invigorating vacation I have ever had. I didn't know what to expect, but driving along a winding road overlooking a dramatic cliff-drop to the Mediterranean Sea on my way to the Pink House for the first time I knew the landscape was more beautiful than what I expected or could have imagined. That same view (sans car) is what greeted me every morning when I stepped outside of the house to breakfast with friends and family at the big stone table. It was like hovering in the sky suspended above the water and surrounded by flowers and greenery--surreal in the best possible way, and a world away from the busy city where I make my home.

High points of my vacation included: sleeping in the hammock located just below the outdoor terrace, driving 3 minutes to Chiessi to spend 2 hours swimming in the sea before a long, leisurely lunch, exploring the beautiful hill towns (Marciana Alta and Poggio) where time seems to stand still, and you can stumble into an empty chapel and sit quietly and reflect on how grateful you are to be in such a beautiful place.

In case this review seems too glowing, here is some advice: Elba and the Pink House are NOT for people who can't imagine life without their iPad. The beauty of being here is reverting to a slower pace of life; overstimulation is not an option--I didn't have cell phone reception at the house. While I could see it being really lovely for a honeymooning couple ready for some serious solitude, I think the ideal situation is a trip with close friends or family in order to really experience la dolce vita in true Italian style: long conversations, long meals, and, my personal preference--and the ultimate antidote to stressful city living--long naps.

The sea is magnificent; there is great swimming and snorkeling, hiking, biking, and strolling through picturesque towns. There is also a lot of history: from 13th century medieval villages hidden high up in the hills (Poggio, Marciana, more) to Napoleon's two properties (Palazzo Reale in Portoferraio & Villa San Martino).
