Cozy lower level Ohana apartment in our home on our 4 acre family farm in the Ohia cloud forest of Kaloko Mauka. We are located at 2,000 feet up enjoying cooler weather and a unique microclimate just above Kona. We are a 10 minute drive to the nearest beach, 8 minutes to Costco and restaurants, and 15-20 minutes to Kona town. It is a private one bed, one bath with it’s own separate entrance and parking. It has a kitchenette with full fridge/freezer, as well as mini washer and dryer.
The Ohana has one bedroom, 1 full bathroom, a kitchenette with full-sized fridge/freezer, 2 burner electric hot plate, toaster oven, and microwave, and living room with a fold down futon couch. We have a pack-n-play available upon request. Dining is alfresco on your own covered lanai with ocean view. There are a mini washer and dryer out on the lanai. There is also a gas grill on the lanai. The gated property is on four acres with beautiful trees and plants. It is in a cloud forest so most afternoons we get some rain. We have goats, cats, a small dog, chickens, and ducks on the property as well as beautiful native pheasants, parrots and wild birds.
The ohana and living quarters are completely private with their own entry and parking. The rest of the property is shared with us.
We live in the home upstairs and can be as available as you need or leave you to your privacy. You will see us outside most days tending to the property and animals, and also our kids playing outside.
We are a family of four with two children. Sometimes our kids laugh, sometimes they cry, sometimes they play, sometimes they bicker, sometimes they run and jump. You will likely hear them and our upstairs foot traffic and noise periodically, but we try to be as quiet as possible. We are also musicians with an indoor music space on the property. Please contact me ahead of booking if you have any questions or concerns about this.
The futon couch in the living room is 71” long and 42” wide when converted down for a bed for guests that choose to sleep on it.
We live at a cooler elevation and nighttime temperatures can drop, especially in the winter. You may want warmer clothing for the evenings, especially recommended in the winter season.
There are coqui frogs that chirp at night. It does not bother us and we consider it pleasant white noise. But if you feel you will be sensitive to this, please bring earplugs.
Hawaii Island is wild and tropical. Some summer days can become quite humid but the late afternoon breeze cools it down. Expect geckos (little lizards) and the occasional bug to be in and around the home. We try our best to keep these critters away but it is impossible to not have any. Stay tidy and don’t leave open food and crumbs out please. The cats never go inside the ohana but they are friendly so may come up to you outside or on your lanai during your stay. Please keep this in mind if you are allergic to, or uncomfortable with cats.
This is an older, unique and beautiful home, made of recycled cedar wood, in a damp tropical environment without central air conditioning or heat. It was actually built by a well known architect here and even featured in a Hawaii style magazine at one point. However, If you prefer modern construction with clean lines, no quirks, and not having a sense of bringing the outside in, then you may not feel comfortable here. It is an open air concept home (like most in Hawaii) so you will feel all of the outdoor temperatures/humidity and smell all of the plants and flower blooms in the air, which we love! The ohana does have a ceiling fan and dehumidifier in the bedroom for use if needed.
Hawaii is unfortunately greatly trying to discourage home vacation rentals and has increased property taxes on homes that host vacation rentals significantly. This is the property fee you will see in the listing. It is calculated in your final price and nothing is added on after the booking. We are sorry to add this, but we have tried to balance it by adding longer stay discounts and a less expensive cleaning fee. We would like to continue to provide a unique vacation rental to Hawaii travelers that prefer not to stay in a large resort or condo complex. Mahalo!

Carrie was very welcoming and responsive when we communicated! It was clean, cozy, and was a perfect stay for us! The frogs outside sang all night and it was so relaxing to listen to. The temperature was perfect during our October stay. The days were a perfect temp and the nights cooled down for a very comfortable sleeping temp. We highly recommend this location!
The ohana was beautifully appointed, and larger than the photos give it credit for. It was close enough to shopping, but far enough to feel away from it all. I cooked most mornings and evenings and everything available made it easy. It was comfortable and well yaken care of.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The property is amazing, the views (sunsets) from the lanai are stunning, and the hosts were a pleasant couple to talk with. We would definitely stay here again and recommend anyone who wants a "quiet" place, this is it. (the Coqui frogs are quite talkative at night:)!) 5 stars all around

This location is away from city bustle, comfy, and a great place to relax after a day exploring the island. Frequent, gentle nightly rain and cool temps make for solid sleep. 15 min drive down the mountain to Kailua, and there are fantastic coffee farms really close by. The property was well maintained, everything worked, and the owners left very good, thorough instructions. Would stay again.
Our family had a wonderful time here during our time in Kona. The place is in the basement of a family’s home. This did not bother us one bit. It is clean and has all the amenities we needed. Since it is in the basement there was a musty smell. This diminished some when we turned on the dehumidifier. Really the only reason we are giving four stars. It is a beautiful location and it does get cooler at night. Love all the plants and seeing the goats.
Amazing sunsets, beautiful secure gated property, close to Kona airport, Costco and Kailua, yet quiet and away from tourists. Door handle is tricky, so just pull handle up instead of pushing handle down after entering code. Higher elevation, so cools off at night making sleeping very comfortable. Sometimes you hear kids thumping around upstairs. Coqui frogs and murmuring ducks provide lovely nighttime orchestra. Bed is comfortable. Host very responsive to needs and may sell you tasty farm fresh eggs. Host also provides beach towels. No conventional stove/oven, and minimal counter space, but hot plate and toaster oven work for most things. Hot water takes a long time to arrive so be patient. Dining table is outside on covered deck and there are some mosquitos at dawn and dusk, but not many. Washer works well but dryer is noisy and slow. No big winds and rain is quite gentle when it comes. Great for a couple and works if you have only one child with you. Love the location and would stay again.
A very comfortable ohana located within easy range of the airport. The sunset would have been more visible if there weren't three gigantic trees in the way. Pesky nature.
