From the owner: "Glad to hear you enjoyed your stay! Happy Holidays!"
Overall was a nice place, BUT… Needs more window screens (wanted to have a breeze but bugs wanted to come in), also needs curtains in the kitchen (setting sun was right in our faces). Could have been cleaner (especially the oven), and no dog doo in the backyard where we parked would have been nice. Was still good for the price.
Great location just a few blocks from the Goonies house in Astoria - perfect place for a fan to stay! Beautiful property, perfectly situated near grocery store, nature trail, places of interest yet still quiet and peaceful.
We loved this sweet old space so much. It was easy to find and directions were clear for parking. The tenants below were quiet and I hope we were the same for them! We arrived at night and the key codes did not work for the front door (which is recommended when you first get there to enter this way), but the back entrance with less stairs to enter worked great, we were nervous for a moment! It's incredible to have three people and three bathrooms available, two of them full. We did the bridge crossing 10k race and we were very wet and cold afterward, and being able to take a shower and warm up in different bathrooms was amazing. We did not use the kitchen much but it was spacious and the views are beautiful. We loved hearing the sea lions call with the windows open. This time of year in October there are a lot of garden spiders all over the outside of the house just to warn anyone who might have a phobia, we did fine but we had to dodge them a little at different points when we would leave the house. We all felt like the beds were comfortable and we slept well. We did snuggle up one night and use the TV and Netflix account which was appreciated. We will absolutely come here again!

Quiet peaceful
It was a quiet peaceful stay… didn’t like that bedsheets and pillows were a little worn and smelled like it was just used by someone else and not washed. It was just a place where we slept and showered.

Hi Amalia, we want all of our guests to feel comfortable during their stay, and we’re sorry to hear you didn’t have the experience we strive for. We're confident that the the bedding meets the high standards we set for our propertyThank you for your feedback, and we hope to have the opportunity to provide you with an improved stay in the future!
Beautiful view of the river right from the huge windows in the kitchen. The view from the front porch is nice. I’m glad we were in the upstairs apartment. The furnishings were perfect for the style of the house. The family downstairs stairs were very sweet.

Excellent place to stay
We were in Astoria for a four day music festival. We didn’t spend a lot of time at this house. However, when we did we were extremely impressed by the updated furnishings. The view was amazing. We will definitely be coming back.
The property could have been a little cleaner. Dog poop in the yard and cobwebs up high (we do understand they are in hard to reach places) and on the patio. We did find a big spider in the house. It was a great location and a fun old house in a quiet neighborhood. We would stay here again for sure.
House was extremely clean and well-organized. Everything we needed was on hand and easy to find. Communication was great and the check-in and check-out processes were very simple. The house was in a quiet location but just a few blocks off the main drag, easily accessible to restaurants and shops. And the best part was the sea lion lullabies! Those suckers are LOUD. Would definitely stay there again!
Near the top of the town, close to restaurants and shopping. Tenants live downstairs and were quiet most of the time; sometimes we could hear them talking, but that's to be expected in an old Victorian, and that means they could hear us.
We have only one complaint: when walking from the parking area to the back stair entrance to the apartment, one needs to walk across the back lawn, and the flagstones that could be used are half-buried and not flat in the lawn, which has ruts and holes that one has to be very careful not to twist an ankle on.

We had a comfortable stay in this nice victorian.
The upstairs part of this house was quite comfortable for the three of us. It was clean and nicely decorated. However, I did not appreciate the 2% hike in the price after I had booked it. I had made no changes in my end of the bargain.

Hi Glenda, We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your time in this clean and comfortable apartment! The 2% tax increase was set by the city after you confirmed your reservation, and your booking total was updated accordingly. This is the hospitality industry standard across hotels, vacation rentals, and other vacation accommodations in the event of a tax increase. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding. Best, the Evolve Team

A Peaceful Retreat
The house was extremely clean, well-organized and thoughtfully arranged. Everything we needed was on hand and easy to find, and what a delight to have a full kitchen! The house is tucked away from the main part of town, but easily accessible via walking (if you don't mind a few hills) or driving. We occasionally heard the tenants on the lower level, but the noise wasn't bothersome and didn't last past 8pm or so. Beds were all very comfortable, even the pullout. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.
Old Victorian home converted into an apartment. Furniture is old and worn out. Mistresses very uncomfortable. Lots of stairs to climb.

Family fishing trip
Charming Victorian style decor. Quiet and comfortable.
We found that the kitchen was cramped. Preparing food was difficult as there was only minimal utensils.
Lots of steps to access home. Not recommended for older folks to climb.
Beautiful view from kitchen!
Repairs needed in bathrooms.
Downstairs neighbors were great!
Pleasant enough, but pricey for what we got in return.
The Painted Lady earned her name for the vivid blue exterior which stands out in a quiet NE neighborhood overlooking historic Astoria and the Columbia River. The second story apartment has high ceilings, multiple tall windows and a Victorian ambiance. The kitchen and is a wonderful place to gather around the dining table for good food, conversation and views of the marine traffic below. Except for the dim bedside reading lights, it was perfect. Come prepared with food and drink because the closest grocery stores and restaurants are a minimum of a 10-minute walk away.

The Painted Lady needs a face lift
First the ok - the property was in a quiet neighborhood with great views from the kitchen. The coffee and tea supplies were abundant. There were lots of towels, bedding and the beds were comfortable. Now the not so good - when we arrived, the ensuite bathroom in one of the bedrooms had no functioning tub/shower and we were not advised of this prior to our arrival which we would have liked to have known about. The place needs a good, thorough deep cleaning. We wouldn't stay here again.

Interesting Place to Stay
Overall, we had a good time. The kitchen was very well stocked. There were games and nice bathrooms. TV with a Roku that was really neat. Shower water pressure was excellent. Atmosphere was quaint. The stairs are quite steep inside so it’s good to be aware of that. The amount of issues we had were small BUT READ CAREFULLY on the listing. The listing advertises a “library” with a pull out couch. There were 6 of us, and my girlfriend and I gave the two bedrooms to my father and my sister with her child. When we went to search for this library, turns out it’s actually just a living room with a bookshelf. We booked it in a bit of a hurry, but I think the listing should be changed to living room. Using “library” makes it seem like a separate room. So we had no privacy the whole trip. The only other thing I think could improve the stay is getting an ironing board, since there’s no access to laundry. Maybe a small vacuum too. Aside from that, everything was awesome. We loved the view from the kitchen and the cute porch. Nice walkable neighborhood in the evening. I would recommend staying here but just know, if you have six, people will be sleeping out in the open.

Unsafe home
The website photos were accurate and showed an older, unique, two-bedroom home. We enjoyed the view and the beds were comfortable. The home, however, was not safe.
The front stairs were extremely dangerous, with the top step loose and attached with tar paper (see photo), loose steps which have tar paper and other debris piled on (photo) and a hand rail for the second story landing about 18" high. Inside there are two walls with exposed insulation and studs and a bathroom under construction (see photo) and another with black mold in the shower. Renting a home in such disrepair for over $450 a night was a disappointment, to say the least.

Hi Kelleen, we're glad that you enjoyed certain aspects of this home but sorry that your stay fell short in other areas. We were not made aware of any concerns during your stay, nor did we receive any photos with evidence of these issues. After following up with the homeowner, they would like to share this feedback:
- The step is not attached with tar paper, but there is a non-slip strip attached to the top of the stairs. We have asked our housekeeper to ensure that no steps are loose.
- There was no debris anywhere, and the steps are always swept as part of the cleaning process.
- There are no handrails in the house that are only 18" high.
- As we inform guests before arrival, we started some improvements before Covid that we have not been able to have finished. This includes the partial bathroom, which has the beginnings of a closet being added and a non-functioning bathtub.
- We confirmed that there is absolutely no black mold anywhere in the house.
- Our records showed that you paid about $425 per night, including the booking fee that goes directly to Vrbo.
We are confident that future guests will continue to enjoy wonderful stays at our historic home!

Lovely view, but needs some updates.
Pros: The historic painted lady is adorable, and has a lovely river view and lots of sea lion sounds. Communication and self check-in were easy to follow. We were able to bring our small dog, and there were thoughtful touches for her, like doggy towels and poo bags, as well as food and water bowls. The cleanliness was very good in the more important areas: bathrooms, kitchen, bedding, towels. The neighborhood was quiet.
Cons: There are a lot of tchockies and fabrics throughout that are quite outdated and dusty, and there is a fairly heavy chemical cleanser/scent, so we had to keep the windows open to avoid headaches. We were also so disappointed that the clawfoot tub was not available for use, as this was a selling point for us. The main drawback was the beds; the mattresses are way too firm and broken down. I resorted to sleeping curled up on the couch 2 nights, just to avoid a trip to the chiropractor.
For me, the cons outweighed the pros, so I will stay elsewhere on my next visit to Astoria.

Allyson, the right vacation home is everything, and we're disappointed if this wasn't the one for you. We followed up with the homeowner after reading your feedback, and they wanted to share the following:
-"Cleanliness is very important to us, but we apologize if the cleaning products caused discomfort during your stay. We'll be sure to take steps to prevent that situation in the future.
-While we try to accommodate all guests' comfort, mattress taste is subjective, and we have never received any complaints about this in the past. We're sorry if the mattresses didn't meet your preferences. We do have plans to replace them in the very near future.
-We appreciate your feedback so we can continue to improve and provide better experiences for our guests."

Should be called the “Needs Painted Lady”
I spent a fortune on this place for our anniversary and I found it incredibly overpriced. The house appeared to be in a state of disrepair with large patches of paint missing on the exterior. The pictures led me to believe that there would be a large claw foot tub but it was overturned in the bathroom and totally out of commission. I’m a big fan of baths and there is no other tub in the other 2 bathrooms There was an odd musty smell and it just didn’t look very clean. The mattress was old and uncomfortable and there is no door at the top of the stairs which left me feeling like we had a lack of privacy. I stayed at a high end hotel earlier in the week for work and it was $200 less than what I paid per night at the Painted Lady. I feel sick about spending so much on an anniversary getaway for a place that fell so short of my expectations. I feel like I was misled by the pictures and highly disappointed.

Hi Jamie, We are sorry to hear that this vacation home fell short of your expectations. The homeowners are dedicated to the maintenance of the property and are already working on a plan to take care of the paint issues on the exterior of the house. All internal spaces are lovingly maintained, and the apartment is aired out and professionally cleaned before each reservation. We do not advertise in the listing that a claw-foot tub is available since the homeowners are in the process of updating the half-bath with a modern shower. We take the safety and comfort of our guests seriously, and the only entryway that appears not to be completely private is the door at the foot of the stairs in the main entry. Rest assured, this door is secured and not in use. The owners are working on adding signage to the home so that future guests can be confident that the door is not in use during their stay. Travelers would not be able to enjoy 1,000 square feet of living space, a fully-equipped kitchen, or sweeping views of the Columbia River from any local hotels like they can at the Painted Lady, and we are looking forward to helping the homeowners continue to host satisfied guests in this historic vacation rental. The Pros, Cons & the in-between:
Pros: Rented for 2 days to explore Astoria. A charming Victorian house, w/ ample bathrooms, nice kitchen, & great view of Columbia river fr kitchen. Eat breakfast & watch ships. Kitchen was adequately stocked with spices & coffee (no decaf). Rooms are so pretty, felt like a fairy princess. Lights on canopy bed would not work, bummer, because they were beautiful.
Cons: Lots of stairs, very difficult. Black berry bushes overgrown stair landing & caused more than one bleeder. Walkway & stairs to parking were broken, wobbly situation. Lots of mole damage in grass area, hard to navigate w/ heavy luggage. 1 bathroom in middle of remodel, no disclosure in listing. Light bulb above sink was not working. This place has 3 bathrooms & one attached to canopy room was in the middle of remodel, so my friend had to trapse thru house in towels when showering, a bit awkward as the 3rd bathroom is thru kitchen, which has large windows & no coverings. Main flat where you will stay is middle floor, balcony is accessible thru narrow stairwell down to 1st floor shares with private residence, awkward, door & walls are thin. We did not use balcony - chairs on are not comfortable.
Kitchen chairs uncomfortable impossible to do computer work. No shades on kitchen windows, & only one could barley open for fresh air. Balcony is shared with private tenant & that seemed weird to be out there next to their living room, when they have their front door open, consequently we didn’t use it at all.

Hi Michaelene, we take it seriously when guests let us know that we missed the mark, and after sending your feedback to the homeowner, they’d like to share the following:-The Property Description and Pre-Stay Information clearly state that there are stairs to access the unit.-We apologize for the overgrown blackberry bushes. This has been taken care of.-We are looking into the situation with the walkway and stairs to the parking to ensure they are stable and secure.-We’ll do our best to control the moles in the grass area to improve navigation with luggage.-We have updated the listing to indicate that one of the bathrooms is in the middle of a remodel and does not have a shower yet. The light bulb above the sink has been replaced. We encourage guests to contact the guest contact immediately for any urgent issues.-There is no need to "traipse through the house in towels" since guests can get dressed in the bathroom. The bathroom window has a blind for privacy. Given the house’s position on a hill and the unit on the 2nd floor, it is unlikely anyone outside can see into the kitchen.-The main entry to the vacation rental is not shared with the private residence. Their door is for fire use only and is secured. The stairway is 38" wide.-We haven't received previous complaints about the porch chairs being uncomfortable.-Regarding the kitchen chairs and windows, we haven't had any complaints before. One kitchen window is left open with a screen during the summer for fresh air. Thanks again for your valuable feedback as we continue to improve for future guests!
