About Jeaves Ropero at L'Elzet Gites
Jeaves Ropero is half French, half English, and grew up in York, UK. She moved to France in 1986 to build l'Elzet with her then husband. For many years Jeaves has built a solid reputation for providing excellent hospitality (and for her meals !) L'Elzet has visitor books with countless testimonials, and many many have said they arrive as visitors, depart as friends! Some visitors return year after year, sometimes twice in the same year, to experience the changing beauty of the seasons, friendship, and a home from home.
Jeaves Ropero at L'Elzet Gites purchased this Apartment in 1986
Why Jeaves Ropero at L'Elzet Gites chose Saint-Étienne-Vallée-Française
Jeaves and her then husband used to stay in the local village of St Etienne Vallee Francaise every year from around the beginning of the 1980's. They had fallen in love with the dramatic beauty and diversity of the magnificent Cevennes and its National Park yet have easy access to and from several airports (Nimes less than 1hr drive), the Camargue and the Mediterranean coast. They never tired of it. This is now a unique chateau style property like no other and she began renting out her first gite - the Tower Annexe and has since added the characterful Clede converted chestnut drier cottage, and a super 2 bedroom apartment, with stunning views overlooking the valley below, (on the same level as the garden and swimming pool). There were so many reasons they chose the site - the evocative atmosphere, the many vistas along its extensive woodlands, next to a friendly local village community and its many amenities, not forgetting the central bar-restaurant to mingle with the locals, tennis courts and horse riding, oh, and the fabulous crystal clear river swimming and cascade nearby, the famous Cevennes National Park, - and more.
What makes this Apartment unique
Having owner hospitality makes every difference to a holiday experience, and Jeaves is a fantastic host and a great cook ! You can be self-catering, or have meals. Out of the main season it is possible to stay for B&B, short breaks, or long let. Visitor feedback suggests you will fall in love with L'Elzet. It is a home from home whilst also having a unique character and evocative atmosphere. The many vistas along its extensive woodlands, next to a friendly local village community and its many amenities, not forgetting the central bar-restaurant to mingle with the locals; tennis courts and horse riding; oh, and the fabulous crystal clear river swimming and cascade nearby, so pure you might not want to swim in the sea again - all combine to make a holiday here special. Everyone should experience the wonders of the Cevennes National Park!

Beautifully set out property, with pool & informative, helpful, welcoming owner on site
We have just spent a wonderful fortnight in one of 3 gites, all beautifully presented, ours with terrace & views over the surrounding hills. Outdoor shared area with pool, from where we enjoyed views again over the surrounding hills whilst swimming. The owner lives on site & was very welcoming & hospitable, as well as helpful & informative about the local area. There was easy access to walking & running, from the door, & further afield we were able to visit the gorge du tarn & adventure parks. A great place to relax & unwind, as well as providing a base for the more active.
Thanks very much Kate, your family was really great and we are happy you spent a great holiday at l'Elzet !
Beautiful and peaceful
We had an amazing time (family of 4, with 2 boys aged 7 & 10). The gite was well-equipped and we all enjoyed splashing around in the pool. Very peaceful and relaxing surroundings. Jeaves was a perfect host, giving us tips on what was on locally and making sure we were well looked after. Lovely river-swimming nearby (15 min drive) plus markets, steam train, caves and bamboo garden (all w/in 45 mins to an hour) and a couple of local events on in the village while we were there too. All in all a great week. Thank you Jeaves!
Thank you very much Kate, it was a pleasure to meet you, I'm happy you enjoyed your holidays at l'Elzet. Hope to see you again !
HALF WAY TO HEAVEN
L'Elzet is the most relaxing location. Jeaves is a superb hostess for whom nothing is too much trouble. Her cooking is delightful. We stayed in La Tour and enjoyed a most pleasant week, probably eating and drinking too much but thoroughly chilling out. The place refreshes you. Extensive views and centrally placed for the Cevennes and the surrounding countryside including Nimes, Pont du Gard, Avignon, and the market at St Jean du Gard. The local village of St Etienne Vallee Francaise is a 10 minute walk. L'Elzet is highly recommended for anyone wanting a peaceful holiday at an unique location, looked after by a delightful hostess. We will return.
Heaven in the South of France
Eight of us stayed at L'Elzet in May of 2009, and everyone - from grandparents to parents to one child and three teenagers - loved it. We still find ourselves basking in the memory of the warmth and generosity we experienced, not to mention the beauty of the landscape and the charm and comfort of our accommodations. There's a village within walkable distance and a river running through a stunning gorge a bit farther where we could swim. Fifteen minutes by car down the road is a town whose market day was a real treat. And thirty minutes away is a bigger town where we were lucky to encounter a festival with brass bands, street food, costumes and happy people. Farther on is Pont du Gard and Avignon. But - back to L'Elzet. Jeeves and Philippe went out of their way to make us feel we'd found the best place in all of southern France to spend our time, Jeeves even preparing a delicious sauce for our spaghetti one night. The younger members of the family thought they'd been dropped into a fairy tale, especially when they met Paques the donkey, five lively puppies and several sedate cats. One of our favorite memories was dining outside, either on our balcony or the patio overlooking the village and valley. We've traveled to many places, exotic and intriguing, but L'Elzet has the most genuine sense of "place" we've experienced. Our memories - and our hearts - return to it often. Thank you, Jeeves.
Thank you Sylvia, it was such a pleasure to have you and your lovely family stay with us at L'Elzet Gites..
What more can we say to such a lovely review!
We would recommend the Gite Elzet with English/French speaking Jeaves as our hostess. Ideal for a family who are looking for a relaxing holiday in the heart of French countryside to deconnect from the stress of towns. The Gite is full of character with breathing taking views. You wake up to bright sunshine and singing birds in an extremely calm atmosphere. Excellent meals are served by Jeaves on the terrasse or you can take a 15 minute stroll to the local restaurant in St.Etienne vallée Française. Highly recommended for a very friendly welcome in a peaceful, family atmosphere.
Karen Chatelard from St. Etienne, France stayed 4 nights 26-29th May.
Tranquil location. Fabulous crystal clear river swimming just 3.5km, Cevennes National Park, walking, canoeing, caves, steam train, many activities. Museums, markets at St Jean du Gard and Anduze. The magnificent Cevennes National Park is stunning ( a UNESCO World Heritage site) in Languedoc Roussillon, We are by the border of both Lozere & Gard.
You can just drink in the stunning panoramic views, and enjoy the many different vistas along 5 hectares of our woodlands or you can have lazy days with perhaps a walk to the nearby village, interacting with the friendly community and sit outside the shaded bar-restaurant we have here, this may be enough for you. But fabulous aquamarine crystal clear river swimming is 3.5km from L'Elzet is an idyllic oasis and has paddling, rock-pooling and beaches. The Stevenson Trail (GR70) passes through here and the village (1-1.5km). Here you have tennis courts, horse riding, football, weekly events during the summer, bar/restaurant(s), small 'Spar' supermarket, butcher, bakery-patisserie, school and doctor.
The Cevennes is diverse, rich in history, flora, fauna, geology and ideal for birdwatcing, & nature photography,
St Jean du Gard 13km colourful markets. Cevenol Museum, Steam Train, Bambouzerie Park, historic Anduze, Activity centre Parc Parfum D'Aventure, Caves de Trabuc, vineyards; cosmopolitan Ales; historic Uzes, Pont du Gard, Avignon, Nimes, Montpellier, Mediterranean coast.
Visitors fall in love with L'Elzet & this magical region and so will you!
