About Johanna and Tony Dold

We wanted to provide a family 'gathering' place that everyone would love. We found it! With seven grandkids we wanted a place where all could gather. Xanadu East is that place. Each spring and summer we spend a week with our entire family at Xanadu East. Our grandkids are growing up here during vacations along with their many friends! A true family experience!

Johanna and Tony Dold purchased this house in 2000

Why Johanna and Tony Dold chose Central Coast

Our grown children have been coming to Emerald Isle every summer for many years since they were the ages of their children. Emerald Isle is a 'generational' place for us. Their kids adore it now as much as they did when they were children. We have passed that on to their children.

What makes this house unique

Constant relaxation...Constant relaxation...Constant relaxation...Constant relaxation...Constant relaxation...Constant relaxation...Constant relaxation...Constant relaxation...Constant relaxation...Constant relaxation...Constant relaxation...Constant relaxation...Constant relaxation...Constant relaxation...Constant relaxation...Constant relaxation...Constant relaxation...sunshine and the entire Atlantic Ocean!!!! Oh and constant relaxation!!!!!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks for sharing your beach home with our family. We had a wonderful time, especially spending two whole weeks. It was a blessing to watch our children play, laugh, build sand castles and catch a lot of fish. Hope to return soon

We rented the property for the first time this year. The house was very nice and is in a great location. The new decks were very nice and eased our concerns regarding decks after all of the deck collapses last year. The house was very well equipped and we certainly didn't need all of the items we brought with us. Tony was great to work with and responded quickly to a minor problem the we came across. I would definitely rent this property again

We stayed in this duplex for our first family vacation in over 20 years and as our first time to the Outer Banks. Overall, our time there was great. We made some great family memories and the beach was pristine. We were a family of 6 adults and two small children (4 and 2 years old) as well as our small dog.

Overall, the house was very nice and had plenty of space for all of us. The upper and lower decks are awesome! One of the best parts was that it literally includes everything. No need to bring beach umbrellas, baby gates (YES!), chairs, sand toys, boogie boards - all are already there. Though it needs some updating, it is cozy and decorated nicely.

There are a few cons though. Upon arrival, the home was pretty dirty. They have a cleaning company courtesy of Century 21 who manages the property that clearly did a horrible job. There was a panty liner from a new bathing suit still stuck on the bedroom wall, trash behind the dresser, thick dust on all the décor and blinds, all the dishes were disgusting and I am not sure if the comforters have been washed in the last few months or if the home has even been vacuumed (especially the carpet on the stairs). Then there were the bugs. They looked like palmetto bugs to me, but the owner later insisted they were water bugs. Either way, they were some huge bugs. The second day there, we killed three of them and ran into them periodically during our stay. I did email Century 21 and copied the owner. The owner called immediately the next morning (never heard from Century 21) and was there within a few hours. He personally changed a cracked showerhead and an older moldy looking showerhead and though it was unnecessary, he also did some cleaning. He still got a cleaning company back out (who only spent less then 30 minutes cleaning things that didn't need cleaned) and exterminating company out same day too. That was very impressive to me that he did that.

I really debated about this review, which is why I waited a few weeks to do it. Overall, we had a great stay and lots of fun, but we also shouldn't have to clean on our vacation or deal with giant bugs (I don't care how common they may be in the Carolinas). This is why I can't rate it more than average, but it is just my opinion of our situation. I would hope that the owner would deal with these issues and Century 21 so no one would have to deal with these problems again.

Owner's Response: We are very sorry for the problems you had, they are not the norm. We take great pride in our property & have had very few problems in the 16 years we have owned it. We check the cleaners every week, that week we did not. In checking with C21 they tell us the cleaner they sent cleaned all the areas that she was told that needed to be cleaned & was that there was nothing else to be done & that they called mid week to see if everything was ok, got a voicemail & did not get a return call. We spray the shower heads weekly with CLR, the one in question has black rubber sprayers and is not mold. But we changed it anyhow. Comforters are cleaned at the start of each season, shaken out each week. If they are soiled or torn they are replaced. We go to great lengths to make sure Xanadu East is in top condition for all our guests, we leave complimentary toilet paper, paper towels, snacks & water for our arriving guests. Most owners don't do that. Again, we thank you for your comment & will be on top of our cleaners even more than we are now. Tony & Johanna.

great location, but..............

this beach house was DIRTY! it smelled really bad when we got there, even the kids thought so. my room was DUSTY. there were small clumps of dust hanging from the tops of the door jamb in the bathroom. i don't think that the shelves in the bathroom or the lamps had been dusted in months! the location was great, but the dirt and dust ruined it for me, the others not so much.

Owner's Response: We were horrified when we learned of the "unclean" condition of our beach home duplex. To anyone who is a guest in our beach home please always call us immediately or call the rental agent to resolve the issue. Cleaning services hired to clean each home should have a higher "quality assurance" than some do. We as owners usually inspect personally after the home has been cleaned. In this case we were, unfortunately, not able to be there that day and the unit was not cleaned satisfactorily. In 15 years of having guests we have not had this occur. Often guests cook fish. If one first enters a home with unpleasant smells there is room freshener under the sink in the kitchen. We have contacted our cleaners and notified them of the unsatisfactory service provided. A call to us and your unit will be cleaned again. We will make sure this does not happen again! We invite you to spend a vacation in our lovely beach home with the incredible views of the Crystal Coast of NC! Thank you for staying at Xanadu East and we sincerely hope you will return again in 2017.

Everything we hoped it would be! The house is really nice, has everything you need and is a ten second walk from the beach. The decks were both awesome, so relaxing to sit on them and watch the ocean right in front of you. Also it was very nice to not have to bring beach chairs, umbrella, etc. since they're all provided. Tony was great to work with, really friendly and helpful. Would love to go back!!

Great Family Place

  • 5 of 5

We were celebrating my husbands 70th birthday and couldn't have picked a nicer place to stay. This was our first trip to Emerald Isle and we enjoyed the entire time we were there. The home is very comfortable, easy beach access and is great if you have small children. We spent a lot of time at the beach and relaxing on the deck and hammock. The aquarium was a great place to visit and Beaufort was also very nice. This home is ideally situated for grocery shopping, picking up fresh fish and some great seafood places. The sunrises and sunsets were beautiful. We enjoyed walks on the beach and looking for crabs at night. They are very entertaining. We loved every minute of our stay and were sad to have to leave to head home. We hope to make this a place to visit often.

Just Perfect!

20 years ago I joined the Peace Corps and met some of the best friends for life. Since our service, we have all gone our separate ways and wanted an opportunity to get together and catch up. We came from Wisconsin, New York, California, Texas, and Virginia to meet at Xanadu East for a week on the water. From the minute we arrived we loved the seaside decor and openness of the house and the lovely views--we even saw dolphins jumping within the first hour of our arrival! We had spouses and kids and a dog and all had a great time--even our dog went boogie boarding! You provided everything we needed for the beach, for cooking, for entertaining the kids, and for just relaxing and being in the moment. With kids and a dog--the convenience of being right on the water was a dream--so easy to run back to the house. One of our party went on a fishing boat trip and brought back two nurse sharks for dinner! We enjoyed waving to the Marines' helicopter in the mornings and evenings. We had two spectacular thunderstorms and even those provided magnificent views. Our last night we had a seafood dinner at Flipperz down the road and enjoyed the Naked Knees band and half-off margaritas. There were bitter-sweet tears when the week was over, but you made it possible for us to have the best ever reunion! Thank you, Johanna and Tony! Thank you for allowing us to use your lovely, welcoming home.
