We are a family of five who live in London but also enjoy weekends and holidays at our house in the Cotwolds. We visit the house regularly and keep it in excellent condition - it is not a soulless holiday rental run by an absent landlord, but a warm and inviting second home which we are pleased to rent out to people looking for a relaxed and fun break from everyday life. We are aware there have been press reports about phishing scams being used on holiday rental sites - I would urge you to make sure you are completely happy with all contact with any homeowners before you send any money. I am happy for you to call me any time to confirm bookings and make sure you have all the correct details about the house and our payment process. I handle all the bookings myself and answer all questions as promptly as I can. We have been renting the house out since 2008 and have not had any problems in the past.
Victoria purchased this House in 2008
Why Victoria chose Somerford Keynes
We fell in love with Lower Mill Estate when we first visited it in 2004, although it was a few years before we decided to buy a property there. It is easy to get to from London (just 15 minutes from the M4), and a great, convenient place to meet up with friends and relatives in Birmingham and Bristol, and yet it is a world away from city living. The Cotswold Water Park has been a revelation with so many interesting activities to explore and all the brilliant cycling routes around the hundreds of lakes - Lower Mill is a peaceful oasis in the middle of some of the UK's loveliest countryside. The Cotswolds, with their charm and beauty, are on the doorstep, but there are often times when we are content to stay on our own little patch - we are blessed with great pubs and local markets and if you really need a quick retail fix, then nearby Cirencester has many fantastic independent shops and restaurants, and the Swindon Outlet Centre is only 20 minutes drive away..
What makes this House unique
We love the fact that our children can roam free on bikes and scooters in the Estate - there is minimal traffic and many safe places for children to explore and play. From very early on, our youngest could to go to the shop with his big brother - a privilege he couldn't have at home. There are also many local activities, a lake beach, sailing clubs etc in easy reach. When friends visit, we adore the peace and tranquility, sipping drinks while the sun sets across the lake is an incredible tonic after a busy week, and a walk along the Thames Path to an excellent pub makes a perfect Sunday. We also love the luxury of swimming in the stunning Art Spa pools whenever we wish or being pampered in the Spa. The house is airy and cool in summer, warm and cosy in winter - a perfect, year-round holiday destination.

Exactly what we needed
Property had exactly what we needed for our stay. Victoria was a great host and very responsive to all questions and requests.
great spot for a winter break
The house was very well equipped for 2 families with plenty of kit in the kitchen, bedding, towels and everything else to make the trip easy and comfortable. Low Mill Estate is a great environment for families with kids and we particularly enjoyed having the use of the pool all week. Really good place for a family get together.
Thanks! We're so pleased you all had a lovely time.
Lovely comfortable house with great views
We had a fantastic weekend at Hoopoe Cottage celebrating a “big” birthday with family. Lots to do at Lower Mill, spa pools were very popular and we had some nice walks and pub lunches nearby. House had everything we needed, plenty of room to relax and we had a bit of sunshine while we were there so the lake views were great.
Great facilities although a little tired
The property has a great position with the patio overlooking the lake and close to the spa centre, restaurant and playgrounds.
The accommodation was perfect for our needs, there were 6 adults and 3 children, however the lounge furniture and some carpets could do with cleaning as they are heavily stained.
The kitchen is well equipped for all your cooking needs.
Thanks for your response, we appreciate the feedback. I'm sorry there were some areas of carpet and upholstery in need of attention during your stay, we had unfortunately had a group in before you who had not left the house in good order and we didn't have time to book a specialist cleaner before you arrived. During the Estate's January shutdown we have a full redecoration of the communal areas of the house scheduled (bedrooms and bathrooms were decorated last year) along with deep cleaning of all the carpets and soft furnishings so the house will be in great condition for our 2019 guests. I hope you and your group will visit us again in the future.
Lower Mill Estate - Hoopoe Cottage
We were a group of 8 who stayed at Hoopoe Cottage from the 04/10 to 07/10/2018. The cottage is well furnished and well equipped with everything one would need. Victoria was easily contactable and replied quickly to any questions we had. The on site restaurant, Ballihoo, serves good food, but we found a glass of wine at £8 a little expensive. We would recommend the on site swimming pools - 1 indoor and 1 outdoor - both heated, with the steam room and sauna, and clean changing areas and spa. Lots to see and do in the area, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return soon. Peter, Ester, Mark, Glynnis, Chris, Charlotte, Nicky and Paul.
Lovely surroundings, lots to do and see
Accomadation exactly as described shame the hedge was so high we couldn't view the lake.
Thank you for your feedback and we're glad to hear you had a good time at the property. We're very sorry about the height of the hedge while you were staying. Lower Mill Estate's wildlife policy does not permit us to cut it back until early September because of nesting birds but it has now been trimmed down and the lake is visible again. The plan for next year is to greatly reduce the height of the hedge in the Spring so that it doesn't grow as high again next year.
Lower Mill Estate is part of the Cotswolds Water Park which has extensive facilities for sailing, fishing, canoeing, water skiing and windsurfing. You can book a taster session, hire equipment or bring your own. The outstanding local countryside is perfect for walking, birdwatching, and picnics - you can be as active or as lazy as you like! The excellent family-friendly pub and restaurant in nearby Somerford Keynes is within walking distance and the ancient and beautiful town of Cirencester, with extensive shopping and dining options as well as Roman remains, is only a few miles away. The rest of the Cotswolds is on the doorstep - stately homes, safari parks, fantastic walking, farm shops, rural pursuits and chocolate-box pretty villages, all within an easy drive. You will be spoilt for choice when planning your holiday, and the abundance of local activities, coupled with the heated pools and cosy fireplace, make Hoopoe Cottage an ideal year-round destination.
