About Mary Martin
Deal Island is going to be our retirement location. We love the slow pace and awesome beauty of the island, wetlands, wildlife, birds. Of course the oysters and crabs are quite tasty too!
Why Mary Martin chose Deal Island
Deal Island is amazing! I love it here. I grew up vacationing on the eastern shore, Deal Island is a dream come true. We love to get off the grid and get on 'island time' It is off the beaten path and a wonderful place to relax, unwind and enjoy family and friends. Once we are here we hate to leave. The locals are friendly and helpful. Of course if you desire more 'action' there are many local sites within driving distance to see including a trip to Ocean City or Princess Anne or Chincoteague
What makes this Cottage unique
This is a wonderful place to enjoy some quality time with the family. There are so many awesome things to do on Deal Island, take a stroll to the bridge and observe the waterlife, walk down the primitive marsh road to our private beach(don't forget your muck shoes), load up the canoe and paddle to the beach, spend the day on the beach and watch the sunset, hire the Kingfisher II and catch your dinner, watch the local crabbers or oystermen to bring in their fresh catch, buy a bushel and cook up the most amazing meal you have ever eaten. There are so many wonderful things to do on Deal Island.

Absolutely Perfect Get Away
I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about vacationing on Deal Island, mainly because of the insects. Well, that can be remedied by bug repellant. :) We had an absolutely wonderful time. The house is very old and historical. You can tell by the staircase. It has been updated for all your needs and decorated with a beach motif. It is just charming.... The private beach is one of the prettiest I have seen on the bay. It is hard to get to and watch the tides if you Kayak or Canoe. Low tide with a kayak is a real challenge. Day trips are not far and the folks that we met were wonderful, down to earth people. Loved it. Mrs. Martin even checked in on email to make sure we had everything we needed. Thank you for the lovely stay and may very well be back next year. :)
Great location! But "away from it all"... means many things!
My friend and I stayed here for a long weekend in July. Overall, we had a good time! The house is relatively small and we were happy to each have a floor to ourselves. Only one bathroom though... and not a ton of hot water! This could be an issue for larger groups! The window a/c units (though loud) kept it pretty cool even during a heat wave.
I think this property could be perfect depending on what you're looking for. It seems like it would be a great choice for a family with small children that don't mind a little adventure.
The island is tiny and beautiful. It's great to be surrounded by water and not surrounded by people. The location is also very good--we did one day at Assateague, one day at Deal Island and then Ocean City for nightlife, and then one day in Salisbury at the breweries. The private beach is a bit of an adventure to get to. You will want bug spray, long pants, and mud boots. Or else boat out to it but make sure to go at high tide. The public beach is very small but nice and the water was perfect. Bring a float—no big waves. It's located on the left just before you cross the bridge to leave Deal Island.
The downsides of "away from it all:"
- Bring in bottled water for drinking and making coffee. The water is safe to drink but is yellow colored and doesn't taste good.
- No Sprint phone reception, pretty good Verizon reception, no Wifi
- Big TV but no cable. Pretty good reception for major networks. DVD player with about 25 movies.
- Gas and groceries are 20 minutes away
The locals were all very helpful. We found out where to buy beer (you can buy it at convenience stores), where the public beach was, and a great recommendation for pizza—Caesar's Pizza Palace in Princess Anne.
I hope this review is helpful to give you a good picture of whether this is a good fit for you! Happy travels!
Good Time on Deal Island
This was a nice house, a little old but quaint. The rooms were a little small. However, we had everything we needed and all in all we had a very good time. The area was also great. We caught fish and crabs and had a great seafood dinner. We used the kayaks provided and they were fun too. We enjoyed the beers at Arby's bar at the end of Deal Island, and they had a country/rock band playing outside in the parking lot on Friday night. We also drove to Chincoteague Island, another fun experience. We have very good memories of our time on Deal Island.
Cute as can be!
This cottage is as cute as can be and is a great place to come and get away from all the hustle and bustle of things and just relax and enjoy nature in its true setting!
Great family get away from it all
We had one of the best 4th of July's as a family. The cottage was perfect for our family of 6. It is clean and have everything we needed. We enjoyed being close to the beaches one we kayaked daily to, the other beach we drove to at the end of the island 1 mile. We put our jet skis in the water and collected shells.
The locals and owner are very friendly and we learned a lot about deal islands history thru them to get the full experience. The stars and sunset are AMAZING.
The cottage has all the necessity. We would suggest a larger dinning table and seating for 6 not 4 we were a bit cramped. Also maybe some Adirondack chairs for around the fire pit. We had some great nights out there making smores. ( bring bug spray) And I think a picnic table would be a great addition. There is 2 kayaks and a great canoe we used and loved.
We made friends with the neighbors and they even brought us fresh steamed crabs that were amazing. You can fish and crab right off the beach or bridge across from the house. And look forward to another vacation there soon.
Great ideas, thanks. I will see what I can do. I'm so happy you had such a wonderful time, that is what it's all about!
Perfect getaway for the family
We spent a very lovely week, alternating days with the private beach (the big canoe fits 4 easily) and Assateague. We just missed a rocket launch at Wallops, but enjoyed our visit there too. And, we spent a drizzly day in the cedar swamps at Furnace Town which was lovely. My only recommendation would be a wagon trailer for the canoe to portage it to the bridge. I could throw it over my head, but that wasn't easy, and I would have appreciated an easier option. Thank you for s lovely vacation
Crabbing and oystering community, buy from the local fishermen or catch your own,Walk on the beach to collect sea glass, indian arrowheads, relics and more, go crabbing or fishing to catch your dinner or buy a bushel of crabs from a local crabber, spot bald eagles, osprey and numerous birds, take a drive to beautiful Ocean City or Chincoteague see the ponies or play in the ocean, Deal Island road is a bicyclist and motorcyclist's favorite ride, hunting is plentiful with everything from water fowl to big game.
