About TIm & Maria Walkden-Brown
Tim and Maria Walkden-Brown are now seeing their vision of providing a place for travelers to appreciate serenity and quietness in a beautiful and uncomplicated hideaway come true. Why, because that is what we ourselves seek…. how much more for us to be share it with like-minded soles….. the Samoan Highland Hideaway. Our quest seeded in the early 1970’s when Tim arrived in Samoa from Australia on his way to Canada. He met his wife Maria and now 38 years later after sojourns in and between Samoa, Canada, Australia and New Zealand we are entering into our dream. No wonder the iconic writer Robert Louis Stevenson had a similar dream. Our family is settled in Australia and Canada and sometimes Bosnia but they all adore the purity of the beauty, culture and simplicity of Samoa. So can you. Tim has spent a lifetime in heavy engineering in many remote locations from the Canadian Arctic to the windswept Sub-Antarctic. Maria’s time away from Samoa saw her putting her heart into what she loves; serving people. She had the ongoing privilege of working alongside people from Africa and Asia while meeting premiers and Canadian hockey stars. Above all she loves her garden so where better than Samoa. As you can see we are a multicultural family, love meeting like-minded folk from all countries. We built our present house in this beautiful and quietly remote highland region of Aleisa on the cross island road to Paradise Beach in the early 2000’s. Since then the grounds have developed and much of our sustenance matured. We completed building a traditional Samoan fale adjacent to the main house in 2010. We can’t wait to share this with our guests.
TIm & Maria Walkden-Brown purchased this House in 1998
Why TIm & Maria Walkden-Brown chose Apia
We originally chose this remote and wild piece of land because it was distant for everyday Samoa. It has transformed to what you see today. We developed the land for our retirement home and then it took on the expansion into our present vacation property.

Home Away from Home in Apia Highlands
We are 2 couples who recently spent 3 nights at the Fale during our 14 day Samoa adventures in August 2018.
We loved waking up to the birds and the beautiful tropical vegetation of the Highland Hideaway, sitting out on the covered balcony in the sunshine for breakfast pre dinner drinks and for dinner. It was wonderful to come home to our own private home each afternoon after our days exploring around Apia and beyond. The walks in the beautifully kept plantation in the early morning were very peaceful and uplifting.
Maria welcomed us to the Fale.. we actually got lost so she kindly met us on the road and we followed her to the Fale after making a stop at the supermarket . She and Chris the manager showed us around and explained about the filtered water , the washing machine etc. So good to have drinkable tap water in Samoa!!
You need to provide all of your own toiletries including hand washing soap..Also tea/ coffee/ sugar etc and pepper and salt.
Dishwashing and washing machine detergent are provided.
Maria provided a wonderful selection of breakfast fruits including pawpaw bananas pineapple mango and avocado which lasted for the time we were there and gave us some more to take with us when we were leaving
The accommodation is dated and mostly clean, the beds could have been more comfortable but this was outweighed by the wonderful atmosphere of the home and plantation, the hospitality of the hosts and having a home away from home to come back to each day.
Many thanks again to Maria and Chris and also to Tim for all your information and communications during the booking process.
Very best wishes,
Heather & Gordon
Barbara & David
Your words are warmly received, Heather.
They would go down better with Gordan's Scotch, but alas, he had other plans for it!
Noted on the beds, we were recently visited by a mattress supplier so
we can keep this in mind to explore options.
We stopped suppling soap when someone had an allergic reaction to our detriment, so encourge others to supply their own.
Tim & Maria have poured their hearts into this property with the aim for
guests to come to a 'Home Away From Home'.
We are pleased this was experienced by Heather & Gordon, Barbara & David.
Thank you all for your hospitality & laughter.
Gorgeous, Relaxing and Economical
My husband and I just spent a month living in this beautiful home to celebrate finally getting married! It is a stunning location, a birders paradise and a penny pinchers perfection. We chose it based on the the traditional Fale, full kitchen and cooler mountain air. We had been in Samoa the previous winter down on the South coast and, found it way too hot to survive without air conditioning. This sucks because, when you leave your room, the heat and humidity feels absolutely overwhelming! Because we were able to cook and, keep leftovers cold we saved a ton of money. Samoa has great local food that you can buy on the side of the road or, on tables outside some grocery stores. The food at resorts is about the price as eating out in the Pacific Northwest of the U.S. This means expensive! We ate lots of, barbeque, taro with fresh coconut milk, palusami and the steam buns from the market - kekepu'a, which can also be found at road stands. Warning! These are highly addictive and only 1.50 Tala! We also went to the fish market in town and, bought absolutely fresh fish for great prices. Sashimi for days.. there is an abundant supply of in season fruit and vegetables on the property. Might I suggest papaya salsa with tomatoe, cucumber, lime and Samoan chilies? Or perhaps a bowl the size of your head full of fresh guacamole? There are at least 4 avocado trees that I found, the fruit almost always already lying on the ground to just pick up. Oranges and limes to go with your evening gin cocktail.
Because so many people can comfortably fit in the Fale, we were able to invite friends and family to join us. Kids upstairs and elderly people in the rooms downstairs.
I really can't say enough about the gardens and small plantation that surround this place. Birds everywhere. You can literally sit on the veranda, drinking your morning tea and, practically reach out and touch a Cardinal Honeyeater as he shoves his face into the pink, fluffy flowers that grow on a tall shrub right there. The close proximity to native forest, the small diverse plantation and, Maria's STUNNING array of flowers bring in birds of all feeding types. Watch for high flying birds too such as, Magnificent Frigate Birds and, Tropic Bids as they move in between the mountains and the sea....love this place and was very sad to leave. But, feel we made friends for life and can't wait to come back. Thanks to everyone!
Abigail and Greg
Dear wonderful and lifetime friends Greg and Abigail,
You make our humble dwelling and property sound like paradise in the mountains. Oh that we could have all of our guests like you both. I learned something about the birds here from Abigail and the wonderful surfing opportunities around the coast from Greg. Not to mention the delicious sushi....could live on that alone.
Please come back again and again.
Beautiful Property with lush gardens and idealic quite environment
The onsite caretakers Sita and Tupo were excellent hosts, were obliging with everything.
We found it easy and a scenic drive into Apia.
The ability to be able to cook our meals with fresh produce and fish from the markets made it really enjoyable.
We loved Sita's home made coconut cream it was the best over our fresh Red Snapper!!
Easy to trip around the island from here too.
A great pleasure to have Colin and party stay at our Fale. Glad they enjoyed the produce of the plantation and helpfulness of Sita and Tupo.
Recommend them as guests anytime.
Samoan Highland Hideaway
My wife and our 5 children, and for two nights, my in-laws stayed at the main house. All I can say is that it handled my family very well - if you are looking for space and a house that can handle a large group, this is the right one for you. From the house itself, to driving down the long driveway surrounded by Teuilas... this spot is just perfect. Thanks to Tepora and Lena for being the ever graceful hosts. Just remember you really will benefit having a 4WD - the driveway from the road is a little bumpy, but once you turn into the property all that is forgotten and all you see and feel is relaxed - fantastic property, hosts are great and owners always make it easy to book and confirm details...
Hope you enjoy it as much as we did....
Amazing Stay in Tropical Paradise
We had an amazing three weeks in Samoa! We stayed in the traditional fale with our two daughters, who are 10 and 9. The girls had an amazing time exploring the grounds and picking fruit from the trees. We had fresh pineapples, limes, papayas and bananas. The caretakers Lena and Teporah were friendly and assisted us with whatever we needed. Teporah's daughter Tehillah was instantly inseparable from our girls. The girls loved to spend time at the , Williamo (groundskeeper) and Feva's house. They absolutely adored Benjamin!
Tim and Maria's property is about 15 minutes from Apia so you will need to hire a car if you are planning to stay there. The accommodations and grounds were better than described! The fale was spacious and the kitchen was well equipped for our needs. The bathroom was modern and had a decent supply of hot water. The fale did not have air conditioning but we found that it stayed pretty cool with the fans and the outside breeze.
Tim was amazing from the first time we made contact and gave us good advice about what to see in Upolu and Savaii. We found it easy to take day trips from the fale to the sites on the island and always looked forward to getting back to our home away from home. Thanks Tim, Maria, Lena, Teporah, Tehillah, Williamo, Feva, Benji and of course Excel and Mandy for such a great experience!
Dab and Keren,
What a wonderful review. Just as good as your stay. Thank you so much. We look forward to seeing your pictures etc when you return to Edmonton. Hope the rest of your trip is going as well.
Tim and Maria
Very peaceful and comfortable
The fale was comfortable, cool and surround by lovely gardens that were perfect for sunset walks with a glass of wine. It was great being able to have some space and the opportunity to self cater ( a trip to the local fish markets to get fresh tuna is a must). The staff were really helpful and friendly and we also enjoyed the company of 2 lovely dogs and a cat ( not allowed inside and able to be kept a away if you don't want their company). The verandah was also a great spot to watch the sunset. You will need a car to get to and from the fale but one is really needed to see Upolu in any case. We would definitely stay again!
South coast beaches are spectacular and so close, only 30 - 40 minutes away. Downtown Apia is just 12 km while Robert Louis Stevenson Museum is situated overlooking Apia. A trip to Savaii will take you back in time. Don't miss out on a beach fale experience.
The Main House is alternate accomodation (2100 sq. ft. upstairs, 900 sq.ft downstairs) for larger families or groups; accomodates up to 8+ people.
