About ray schilke

I design sound for the theatre. I also own and operate a sound company called Ins & Outs and we do a lot of theatre and musical events in NYC. Locally our work is more charitable within the non-profit sector. I've lived in New Paltz for 20 years and I drive a lot.

ray schilke purchased this farmhouse in 2000

Why ray schilke chose New Paltz

The farmhouse was built in 1911 and has a lot of character. We recently renovated it and included some really nice details . The back deck overlooks the pond and there are seasonal views of the Shawangunk Mountains. There are trails that wind through the woods and there is a wonderful bird, reptile and wildlife population.

What makes this farmhouse unique

If you've never had an egg that was laid just hours before you cooked it, you're in for a real treat.

The girls here are free-range and enjoy a pretty nice diet of natural grains and fruits and vegetables. They're quite healthy and friendly and fun to watch ! And if you have a garden at home, we would be glad to give you a bag of their poop for fertilizer, perfect for growing herbs !

Great place!

Came here with a few friends over the weekend. Great back porch to hang out on and grill. Had a fantastic time staying here, and Ray was attentive and helpful. Thanks!

A wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

We spent a lovely weekend at Ray's farmhouse. The location is perfect. Very close to New Paltz on one side and to a farm stand on the other. The house is pretty close to the road, so it was easy to find and didn't feel like the middle of nowhere. On the other hand, the road wasn't noisy, and in the back of the house there was a beautiful, serene pond and the woods. There are two decks at the front and the back of the house and adirondack chairs scattered throughout the property.

The inside of house was spacious and very clean. It is newly renovated, and we loved that it had quality fixtures, fridge, etc. There were really thoughtful touches throughout - coffee and other essentials in the kitchen, milk in the fridge. We also loved all the natural hand and dish soaps. We were traveling with young kids, and Ray left us some juice pouches and children's books. And of course we loved the fresh eggs from Ray's free-range chickens!! Our kids loved running around the property and hanging out with the chickens.

Ray was incredibly welcoming and helpful with suggestions for things to do in the area. He checked in with us to make sure that we were comfortable, and even offered to bring an extra air conditioner, because the weather was warm. It wasn't necessary, but we really appreciated the extra care to make sure that we were enjoying our stay. We will certainly rent this property again if we are in the area.

Could use a cleaning and pest control

  • 2 of 5

The house is located in a quiet country setting overlooking a large pond.

The house itself could use a good cleaning (dusty floors, cob webs, etc.), and the only smoke detector we could find had been placed on top of the refrigerator, where it would not be very effective. We did not see any CO2 detectors.

There were also the mice: When we were checking in the owner casually mentioned that there was “a mouse” in the house, although he didn’t say what he was doing to eliminate it. The first morning we found that two bags of snacks we had left out had been chewed open and there were small pieces of packaging and mouse droppings all over the counter.

We decided to store everything in the refrigerator and the microwave, but still saw evidence of mouse activity in the kitchen each morning. When we were sitting in the living room watching TV at night we also heard mice gnawing away at something in the corner of the basement beneath us.

New Paltz always holds a special place in our heart . We love this area.

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at this farmhouse. The home is on a great piece of property with cute chickens roaming . We were there for a quick weekend for my daughters graduation from SUNY New Paltz. We slept 5 adults there in 2 rooms . Ray was around to answer any questions and even give us extra fresh eggs. We would recommend to anyone willing to have a different experience than being in a hotel room . We would love to have a bigger bed in the main bedroom next time as we are used to our king at home . We would come back either way . We were able to get a $7 taxi to and from town where there is live music and good food. Thanks for sharing your property with us.

Rural getaway close to attractions & dining

  • 5 of 5

Rehabbed farmhouse is, as billed, cozy. It is smallish, but we were comfortable with four adults sharing the space. One room is a double bed, the other has a twin and futon, so sleeping arrangements are adequate, though not ideal. Decor is a mixture of antiques, shabby chic, and newer items, with lots of warm color. The view overlooking the pond is very pretty, and the owner's chickens add a nice touch to the visual. New Paltz has many excellent dining choices, and for warmer days the farmhouse porch has a grill and table. Good spot for an easy, low-key getaway.

Homey and land!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at Ray's. Very close to town but also a nice respite as the house is on a lot of land and is very quiet. All that we needed was there. It felt very comfortable being there. The one question we had was answered by Ray promptly. My 3 year old cried for a good 20 mins on the drive home that he wanted to go back to Ray's so that was a sign of a successful trip! And the fresh farm eggs were amazing!
