About the property

4 Bedroom villa to sleep 8 (+ travel cots) just outside the town of Volterra.

Il Vecchio Mulino is a recently restored former mill just outside the ancient Etruscan town of Volterra in central Tuscany. The villa is located at the end of a long drive in a secluded rural valley providing the ultimate get away location. The property has been restored to a high standard and incorporates many original features of the building with a modern edge. The house is situated in a large, very private, garden surrounded by ancient woodland. The huge swimming pool is set on a paved terrace and is split into three pools, a shallow child’s pool, a lane for swimming lengths and the main pool area. There are furnished stone terraces around the house and a barbecue and dining area for alfresco dining.

Volterra is located in the heart of Tuscany and provides the perfect base to explore the region. The sea is in easy reach at Cecina (35km) and San Gimignano (20km), Florence (50km), Pisa (37km) and Siena are all nearby.

All modern conveniences are available including washing machine, tumble dryer, microwave.

The large landscaped garden has several seating areas and terraces. There is a small stream running through the edge of one area of the garden. The pool and garden are regularly maintained during the week.

Please note that the road to the house is a private gravel road and is bumpy in parts! To reach the house you must cross a small ford.

About Anna Lipani

We are a family with an Italian background and a love of Italy, especially the food. Both my husband's parents are Italian and have now retired back to Italy. My father is Italian but has lived in the UK for many years. As a result of our family history, and our love of all things Italian we decided to buy a property there. Since buying and restoring the house (it was derelict when we purchased it) our own family has grown and we now have two daughters. They love being at the house and especially enjoy the swimming pool and it is a pleasure for us to pass on our love of Italy to them, and hopefully others who visit.

Anna Lipani purchased this villa in 2004

Why Anna Lipani chose Pisa Province

We picked this property to purchase because of it's location. It is so peaceful and secluded, a welcome break from our hectic lifestyles in London. Yes you don't always have great mobile phone signal and you get the odd power cut but for us that is all part of the charm!

Although the house is private you are close to the town of Volterra which we love. There are some great restaurants and friendly people who have become our friends. You are also near enough to visit Sienna, Florence and the beach and not too far from Pisa airport, making it easy for us to head over whenever we fancy!

What makes this villa unique

The WOW factor of the house is the HUGE pool, that my husband designed. It is by far the biggest I have ever seen at a rental villa. The house has private gardens all around the property and as our nearest neighbours are not near you do not need to worry about noise etc.

Il Vecchio Mulino is situated just outside Volterra,a charming town with an unspoiled atmosphere, discovered by those who enjoy its quiet beauty and great location. This original Etruscan hilltop settlement, sitting atop an enormous bluff and surrounded by strong walls is a jewel of Roman, Etruscan, medieval, and Renaissance art. It is a city of magnificent vistas from farmlands to mountain views. There are plenty of great restaurants and bars in the town, perfect for wine and food lovers. The town is also famous for it's locally produced alabaster

San Gimigano, Sienna, Pisa and Florence are all nearby with their fantastic attractions, shops and restaurants. The famous outlet malls are also worth a visit outside Florence for fashion lovers.

The nearest beach is only 30 minutes away by car at Cecina and the glamorous beach resort of Forti di Marmi is just over an hour away.

Family holiday near Voltera

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely old mill house from which to explore Tuscany - if you can drag yourself away from the superb pool. The house itself is well equipped and has four good bedrooms. It is really secluded at the end of a little valley, and felt very private. We entertained friends, cooked BBQs, drank lots of local wine and watched the fireflies before collapsing in to undisturbed sleep.

We visited San Gimignano and Lucca, and you could easily visit Sienna and Florence (but the pool was more inviting!). It is only 10/15 minutes in to Voltera, which in many ways is more pleasing and less touristy than San Gimignano, although it doesn't have the World famous ice cream! You can also have a very reasonable 'blow out' at the Trattoria Albana in Mazzola which is 15 minutes away (see Rob Bryden and Steve Coogan in 'The Trip') - but don't plan much afterwards. The scenery on the drive up there is also spectacular. It was a lovely week.

Absolutely beautiful villa...

  • 5 of 5

...with original features in a secluded location yet only a 5 minutes drive into Volterra. The pool was extremely inviting on the hot days and the local area is very rich with history. The villa itself was very clean and tidy, I will definitely be returning next year!

Thanks again, it made our holiday!

Preciosa casa, bien equipada en una localización aislada que puede incomodar a algunas personas.

  • 4 of 5
