Close your eyes and imagine a perfect farmhouse. What does it look like? Does it look like this?

Utterly private (on 175 acres), our home boasts an iconic view of majestic Dorset Mountain from the front rooms, while in the back are our own pastures and forest, extending nearly all the way up to Staples Farm.

The house has SIX BEDROOMS (one King; three Queens, one with double bunk beds, and one furnished as an upstairs den/writing room); 4.5 bathrooms; an enormous living room (with a magnificent marble fireplace); a den; a breakfast room; a formal dining room (with many leaves for the table); a rear living room/office; and the laundry area.

The house is ideal for a large family getaway – for that matter, for two or even three families – looking for a comfortable, luxurious residence to return to after a day spent

-At the HORSE SHOW (10 minutes),

-SKIING (25+ minutes, depending on where you go),

-SHOPPING at the Manchester Outlets (20 minutes),

-Swimming/boating at EMERALD LAKE (8 minutes),

-HORSEBACK RIDING (several stables within 5 minutes, for trail rides or indoor riding),

-Seasonal APPLE PICKING on our own trees, in the pastures (these are ancient trees that have never seen chemicals, and the apples are amazing)

-Meandering, antiquing, admiring the foliage, heading to farmers markets, and


…And who enjoy cooking, lounging and relaxing in a house big enough to accommodate everyone...and built well enough to *not* hear everyone.

It is a gourmet’s delight (cooking in it is a pleasure, and we have excellent appliances and cookware/bakeware (and yes, a KitchenAid and a Cuisinart).

It is a child’s delight, with incomparable spots for hide-and-seek and many games, toys and puzzles (grown-up games and puzzles, too). Because the house has two stairways, kids enjoy running loops, and one of the happiest sounds parents hear are the thundering steps of the children running around upstairs...while enjoying cocktails downstairs. The creek is also a favorite place for children, and the hill is great for sledding in the winter.

It is a refuge of quiet and serenity, surrounded by green, evocative of an earlier time. Never have we had a guest not specifically remark on how being here has made them feel relaxed, even after only one night.

Stargazers are in for a particular treat, because with our acreage comes great seclusion (no light pollution) and on clear nights, the viewing is unrivaled. (In the summer, the fireflies add to the magic. It is really spectacular.)

While the house has all the integrity and charm (and some of the idiosyncrasies) of a house built at the turn of the last century, it has seen substantial renovations. Let’s just say it’s been a labor of love, and all systems, hardware, and plumbing are current if not brand-new.

About Deborah Sherman

I grew up in Manhattan and have lived in New York virtually my whole life, except my college years (four years in New Haven) and two and a half years in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I met my husband. I love California, but NYC pulled me back. We reside in Manhattan with our daughter and our cat. We love food and cooking (frequenting sundry farmers markets -- Rutland on Saturday and Dorset on Sunday are fantastic), and we love to travel, ski, read, relax, and enjoy culture.

Why Deborah Sherman chose Danby

My parents purchased our home in 1968 -- when I was less than a year old -- and my memories here have been etched over a lifetime. Christmases with huge trees, a million presents, blinking lights, sparklers on the porch; stargazing with my father against a pitch black sky; snowmobile rides into the back woods with my father, when I was small and he was strong enough to have been Paul Bunyan. Thanksgivings here almost every year, while my mother was still alive. Originally purchased as our ski house, my mother made this her primary residence in the mid-80s. She passed away in 2010, and we have begun our own traditions. We live in Manhattan, and owning this house has been a crazy labor of love. We have cleaned, fixed, upgraded, invested, weeded, insulated, and so forth. It's refreshed, it's loved, it's super-clean, and it's glorious. There is something about it here. We feel it, and our friends feel it. There is something amazing about the expanse of space and nature; it is a definite departure from the 'real world.' It is almost mystical, and it is incredibly serene.

What makes this Farmhouse unique

In the warmer weather, we sit on the front porch with our coffee, and gaze at Dorset Mountain -- it is as though it belongs only to us. It is magnificent, regardless of the weather -- dramatic in all light and weather. We look out the picture window in the kitchen when we're cooking, up the back hill to Staples Farm -- and it's our meadows and trees. We pick apples in the fall and sled down the hill in the winter. We also hang out and watch Disney movies, cook, eat, cook some more and eat some more. With six bedrooms and all the additional public rooms, there is a spot for everyone to read, relax, or play. The house at once huge and rambling but cozy, and traditional but current.

                                                          Deborah is an absolute pleasure to deal with. Detail oriented, thoughtful, friendly and responsive. The house is spacious yet cozy. Clean, well equipped and everything is labeled for ease of use. We quickly felt right at home because we knew exactly where everything belonged, ( did I mention detail oriented?) or where to find an extra blanket or plush towel.

                                                          Our holiday vacation was wonderful . We felt comfortable and welcome.

                                                          Our family had a wonderful stay in this beautiful country home. The house was huge with great amenities and a fully modern kitchen. The property carried on for as long as the eye could see and the kids had a great time outdoors as well as inside. The bedrooms and bathrooms were all modern with a touch of old country feel to them. The home was close enough to Manchester, VT to go to dinner and shopping yet enough away to make it feel like you were away in the country. We were attending the VSF and the home was a convenient drive there. Lastly, the home owner was incredibly generous, open and helpful. We would definitely come back.

                                                          20 minutes north of Manchester, 25 minutes South of Rutland, we are just a drive from many of southern Vermont's greatest attractions, including: - Vermont Festival HORSE SHOW (10 minutes), - SKIING (25+ minutes, depending on where you go; Bromley is closest), - SHOPPING at the Manchester Outlets (20 minutes), - Swimming/boating at EMERALD LAKE (8 minutes), - HORSEBACK RIDING (several stables within 5 minutes, for trail rides or indoor riding), - Meandering, antiquing, admiring the foliage, heading to farmers markets - Southern Vermont Art Center - Dorset Marble Quarry (Google it -- amazing swimming place) - Etc.! In the early Fall, the foliage is spectacular. Our property has ancient fruit trees and the apples in and along the edge of our pastures are delicious.
