Great Getaway on Lookout Mountain!

Bedrooms 2
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cottage, 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, (sleeps 4-6)

Whether you come to relax, browse through quaint shops, or explore the natural beauty of Mentone, Chestnut Oaks is the perfect getaway for you.

Our cottage, nestled on the west brow of Lookout Mountain between the historic town of Mentone and Desoto State Park, has a wrap-a-round porch with rockers to enjoy the breathtaking view.

Even though our cottage is equipped with satellite TV which means you won't miss your favorite ball game in the fall, most of you will leave it off to enjoy your restful surroundings. The large porch is the perfect place to enjoy the cool shade of the trees in the summer and colorful fall. The winter months reveal the beauty of the valley below and the ridges in the distance.

Family, friends, or just the two of you can enjoy the rustic pine paneled 'gathering room' where you can read books, play cards or board games, watch TV, or cook up something is the fully equipped kitchen. On a chilly day enjoy a fire in the gas log stove on the stone hearth. There is a small stone patio with a charcoal grill for your cookouts.

The two bedrooms each have a queen sized bed with linens and warm comforts. Each room has storage space in chest of drawers and good closet space. There's a cot in one bedroom. The sofa opens to sleep two if needed. The two bathrooms are equipped with towels, tissue, and hand soap.

The cottage is located 4.6 miles from downtown Mentone and 2 miles from Desoto State Park. Some of the many activities available for you include incredible water falls, hiking, horseback riding at the Dude Ranch, snow skiing at Cloudmont, and golf at Lil Mole Run. Go to Desoto State park or the Canyon Center for more information on events provided. Try the shops in Mentone. Don't miss the antiques at White Elephant, the art at Kamama's, or the pottery at Miracle Pottery.

If you don't want to cook at the cottage, try some of the wonderful restaurants in Mentone. Some of our favorite eats are found at Wildflower Cafe, J. Spencers, Moonlight Bistro, Mentone Springs Hotel, and special treats at Kamamas.

About Susan Collins, Southern Properties Agency

My husband and I love the Mentone area, and in the past we enjoyed staying in rented cabins and the state park. We live 2 hours away, and in 2005 we purchased a cabin of our own on the west brow. We enjoy the area so much, we purchased land and built another cottage for renters and 'spill over' room for our family gatherings. Our cottage is managed by Susan Collins with Southern Properties Agency.

Susan Collins, Southern Properties Agency purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Susan Collins, Southern Properties Agency chose Mentone

Several years ago my husband and I fell in love with Mentone and this area of Lookout Mountain. We love the West brow view with its beautiful sunsets and distant sounds of the trains traveling in the valley to Chattanooga. In 2006, we purchased land directly across from Comer Boy Scout Camp on Desoto Parkway (County Road 89) and built our Chestnut Oaks in the quaint Mentone style on the edge of the west brow.

Beautiful view from outside porch! Impeccably clean and well-appointed living space inside!

  • 5 of 5

This property is well cared for - impeccably clean and well-appointed. We wanted for nothing during our stay. Besides the kitchenware, cooking/baking staples, plenty of bath and bed linens, basic bathroom and laundry supplies, the owners of this property supplied lists and brochures of recommended restaurants and area attractions as well as instruction manuals for the television and all appliances. This property is on the “brow” of Lookout Mountain and has a large porch, complete with rocking chairs, from which to enjoy the view.

Beautiful, Cozy.. Felt like home!

  • 5 of 5

We needed a girls weekend away, and this turned out to be the perfect place! The porch with the rocking chairs was perfect! The view was beautiful. Everything was clean and in working order. The gas log heater was amazing! The kitchen came equipped with everything we needed from a bottle opener to pots and pans. We will most definitely be back some time to stay again!

The Good and Not So Good!

  • 2 of 5

Oct. 2017

We had rented this house from Mon-Fri. This house, halfway between Mentone (15 min) and Ft Payne (20 min), is a nice structure & reasonably clean. View from mtn. top is nice, area seems safe. Overlooks along the roads provide great vistas of the valleys below. Chattanooga is a short drive. DeSoto Falls & Little River Canyon parks are great.

Be aware that Mentone & Ft. Payne shops are open Th.-Sat (maybe more in summer?). Eateries in Ft. Payne are chains & provide good food, small cafes in Mentone are so-so. Walmart in Ft Payne provides good grocery shopping. Mentone has gasoline.

Property needs movies, games, cards since there is nothing to do after dark & lots of TV channels are mostly sports. (TV is small.) A radio might be nice. Some additional new cookware, baking sheets, etc. are needed. New coffee pot with auto shut off might prevent a fire.

Old checkered sofa-bed (only place to sit) sags and metal frame hits the floor when you sit & the wooden rockers imprint your back & hurt from the wooden spindles. New regular sofa & couple comfy chairs needed inside. (Trundle beds or folding beds would give extra sleep space when needed and can be stored out of sight.) One dining chair about to fall over-wobbly. No decent lamp anywhere to read by. Old wooden rockers on the porch are not good for sitting to look at the view or enjoy nature.

But the worst for us were the queen beds-hard like sleeping on a concrete floor. We left 2 days early because we were so tired and achy. Two inch toppers might make a difference? New beds even better.

THESE SAME COMMENTS ARE IN OTHER REVIEWS SINCE 2013. (I should have read them all!) I hope these comments will help others when they are trying to decide where to stay.

We had hoped to make this our "go to" spot every other month for a week of relaxation. We have owned vacation rentals since 1999. In our view guests comfort and safety should be top priority.

Owner's Response: We are so sorry that your Mentone stay was a disappointment. As owners, my husband and I took your points seriously enough to print out your review and take an inventory of the cottage. One of the things that happens after a busy season like the fall of the year is that some directions get misplaced. After putting a new "Dish" program out for renters to easily see, we found that 8 movies were in the drawer of the TV table and there are 4 movie channels included in our "Dish" offerings. There are also several Sirius Radio programs on Dish. Your review made us do a needed check up. We are in the process of making some changes and additions. In addition, we have asked our rental agent to make an adjustment on your bill. Thank you so much for your comments and we hope you have a pleasant holiday season.
