About Ramona Hodges

In 1989, my husband, Ed, and I, realized a dream to build a cabin in Lake Tahoe. Ed taught science and Math at a Middle school for 38 years and I worked as an RN at a local hospital for 40 years. We have lived in San Jose for over 50 years & have 3 grown children and 4 grandchildren. We are a very close family and enjoy spending time together. Our family has had many memorable times together at the cabin; skiing, playing games, sharing meals, hiking, biking, swimming, and so much more.

Ramona Hodges purchased this cabin in 1989

Why Ramona Hodges chose Chamberlands

We had always wanted a vacation home; a place to 'get-away' and find serenity amid the natural beauty of our earth. There is no place more beautiful than Lake Tahoe!!

So, one day, when the opportunity arose to buy property in the Chamberlands, a premier subdivision on the Westshore, we jumped at the chance to realize our dream. We worked with a local contractor to plan and build our vacation cabin and are grateful to realize our dream.

What makes this cabin unique

We love our cabin for the peace, fun, warmth and beauty it provides. In the summer we enjoy walking in the Chamberlands, and to the beach. We love sitting on our deck, barbecuing, playing games and sharing time and love with our family and friends. We enjoy eating breakfast at the Firesign Cafe and dinner at the Sunnyside restaurant as well as other lakeside restaurants nearby and in Tahoe City. We like to drive to Virginia City and visit the historic sights. My husband likes to go to Cabelas on Highway 80, a 45 minute drive, and I like to gamble occasionally at the nearby Casinos. We never tire of visiting beautiful places such as Emerald Bay, Eagle Lake & nearby Erhman Mansion. Our family & friends also enjoy everything the Lake has to offer; biking, hiking, boating, fishing, skiing, gambling, shopping and so on.. One of my favorite things to do is to make needlepoint, embroidered and crocheted art work for the cabin which, in my opinion, just adds to its charm. My husband likes to build things that make our life and our guests lives easier and more fun such as: a giant swing and horse shoe pit in the backyard and a covered firewood shed close to the cabin making it convenient to get wood for the fireplace in the winter. Our children love to ski and snowboard and appreciate the convenience of driving such a short distance to several ski resorts.

Ramona's Retreat was wonderful. We spent five nights and highly recommend it.

  • 5 of 5

In a quiet community, forested, away from hustle and bustle but easily accessible to Tahoe City, Squaw Valley, lots of state parks, wilderness areas on California side. Walk to hiking/bicycle paths and to the lake. We took several warm up walks through the neighborhood each morning. The house was terrific: most importantly, you could feel the love and got a sense of the wonderful family that has spent lots of wonderful time there. The surprise wall decoration in the vaulted living was a scream! Really comfortable, welcoming, warm. Clearly not an "investment" property with no character.

The patio just off the kitchen was great, with grill, wonderful place to sit outside. There were a number of really helpful maps and brochures about area attractions.

Ramona had answers to all of our questions before arrival, the house was spotless. We had a wonderful time and were delighted with our choice. We felt blessed.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the wonderful review!! My husband & I have put a lot of time and effort into making the cabin a place where our family and guests can relax after a busy day enjoying all that the surrounding mountains & Lake has to offer! We like to think, and you have verified it, that our guests would appreciate the special decor, (some handmade), that shows how much we love our our second home!! And, thank you especially, for noting the cleanliness of the cabin. Our housekeeper is phenomenal!! She will appreciate the feedback! We hope you will come back!

Terriffic Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Lake Tahoe. The weather was great and it was not crowded at all. We spent the week at Ramona's Place and the cabin is so comfortable we didn't want to leave. It was neat and tidy, and was stocked with everything we would ever need. We got great value there and would definitely stay there again.

Excellent time at Ramona's Retreat in the Chamberlands

  • 5 of 5

The house is well furnished and comfortable. Nothing over the top. This is a family cabin, and is well kept. The accommodations are nice and clean. It includes a pass to the private beach access, which was useful over the busy Labor Day weekend.

Comfortable, Great Location

  • 4 of 5

Well appointed cabin. Neither large nor too small. Would hold 6 very comfortably, and more if using sofa bed and/or inflatable. Kitchen a nice size and has everything you need. Nice deck with table, umbrella, and BBQ. Comfortable living area and large dining table. Kids enjoyed the darts. Loaner bikes were nice. Great location - short drive to beach access. Could walk or ride a bike to the beach if desired. Owner very helpful - she answered the phone when we had a question and helped us get an item that we left behind.

Excellemt place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Romona was very easy to work with and a great communicator. The kitchen is well stocked with many spices. There are helpful notes throughout the cabin to assist with your stay. She has 2 bicycles for riding around the Lake Tahoe bike trails. She also has a horseshoe pit we enjoyed playing with and a swing out back. The cabin felt really homey and comfortable. We had a minor problem with the toilet handle in the master bathroom and notified Romona via email just to let her know about it for the next renter. Romona called right away to see if we needed it fixed and to see how our stay was. We enjoyed meeting the neighbors across the street and their dog Bella. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

In the summer, membership privileges include access to the private Chambers Landing Beach with life guards, paddle boats for children, a restaurant, bar & pier, and shuttle service to and from the beach. In the Summer, Spring, and Fall, popular attractions and activities closest to the cabin, between 2 to 20 miles, are hiking and biking trails, visits to the Ehrman Mansion in Sugar Pine Point State Park & Squaw Valley Village and world-famous & spectacular Emerald Bay. Our friends and family have enjoyed hiking down to the Vikingsholm in Emerald Bay, viewing the beautiful waterfalls, and hiking to Eagle Lake. The trail to Eagle Lake begins just across the highway from Emerald Bay. Also enjoyable and offering spectacular views, is a hike up Eagle Rock located 3 miles north of the cabin. A biking trail, ¼ mile from the cabin, goes north to Tahoe City and south as far as Meeks Bay. Bikes can be rented in Homewood. Boats, Kayaks can also be rented in Homewood and Meeks Bay. Enjoy a chartered boat cruise, (including dinner cruises) on the Lake which can be arranged in Homewood and other nearby villages. A Class One, 5 mile river raft trip, is available starting from Tahoe City. Fishing in the nearby Truckee River is yet another family favorite.

In the winter, skiing and snowboarding are available at Homewood Ski Bowl, one mile from the cabin. Other ski resorts, within a half-hour drive are, Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows & Northstar. Cross-country skiing can be enjoyed at Sugar Pine Point, (2 miles) and Granlibakken (6 mi). Sledding can be enjoyed one mile south of Tahoe City and a few other areas on the Westshore. We provide sleds, saucers and a toboggan.

In all seasons, other activities, attractions and conveniences include, dining in several lakeside restaurants, shopping and gambling. Several excellent restaurants & interesting places to shop are within 5 to 10 miles from the cabin. A list of recommended restaurants available upon request. For groceries and other supplies, there are two supermarkets in Tahoe City. One mile south of the cabin, on Highway 89, is the Tahoma market, a favorite for Deli services, groceries and movie rentals. Stateline casinos are located approximately 20 miles from the cabin on both the North and South shores of the Lake.
