About the property

A family home in Ferndale, the Victorian Village, California

A very quiet Craftsman house on 1/2 acre, two bedroom, two baths. Francis Street Home was built in the Craftsman style, heated with warm-floor, furnished with family favorites, antiques, art and rugs, wireless access, Dish TV, telephone and DVR. The kitchen is fully equipped: dishwasher, stove, refrigerator, appliances, and full laundry room.

From the old-fashioned porch and wrap around deck, you can enjoy the wildlife, or just relax and watch the cherry petals drift down.

Set on 1/2 acre, Francis Street Home has two bedrooms with adjustable twin beds, two full bathrooms, den/office (with sofa bed), large living room, dining nook, kitchen and laundry room and outside barbecue. A cement ramp allows easy access to the house without using the stairs. Two parking spaces. The beautiful, landscaped yard includes a swing-set and play house for younger children. The city park is just around the corner.

About Marilyn Benemann

We, Carlos and Marilyn Benemann, by mistake took the right turn off Highway 101 across Fernbridge 36 years ago, and have been in love with Ferndale ever since. We own a two-story Craftsman house, built in 1912, right across the yard from your Francis Street Home. We owned antiquarian bookstores in Ferndale and Eureka for 25 years, until Marilyn retired. Carlos continues his career as a California court certified Spanish and German interpreter. We love talking with our guests about books, foreign travel, horses and the good life in Humboldt County. Francis Street Home was built as a retirement dream home for Carlos’ parents. We now want to share it with you.

Marilyn Benemann purchased this house in 1999

Why Marilyn Benemann chose North Coast

WELCOME ! To a quiet, comfortable, redwood Craftsman style home, on a landscaped half acre. Bordered by Francis Creek, just a block from the city park and downtown stores and restaurants.

What makes this house unique

As you cross Fernbridge from Hwy 101 and drive through the bucolic scenery,

feel the stress from your daily hustle slip away. Drive past the beautifully preserved Victorian buildings on both side of Main Street, Ferndale, which becomes Francis Street after Ocean Street.1 and 1/2 blocks to a long driveway on the left. Turn up the driveway at 176 Francis Street. You have arrived.

Francis Street Home is your home away from home and downtown and the restaurants on Main Street are only a block away.

Excellent hosts, cozy home.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Francis Street vacation home and Carlos and Marilyn were most gracious hosts - even providing a stroller for us to borrow to walk to town. House is conveniently located a block from the cute town. House itself was cozy and comfortable for our family and little doggie. The fenced back yard was great for her too! And the heated floors were so luxurious! We will be back one day for sure!

Perfect Hideaway in Ferndale

  • 5 of 5

The Francis Street vacation home is lovely. Very comfortable and attractive with beautiful furnishings, special

pieces, art, books, well-stocked kitchen (we cooked) and nice to have two bathrooms. Marilyn and Carlos are

so hospitable and make sure all is fine. The house is quiet, tucked back from a quiet street, a short block from

the charms of Ferndale. We were there at Christmas and they had Christmas lights twinkling on the porch to

welcome us. There is play equipment for children in the yard and patio dining if the weather is warm. A very nice

flat screen TV is in it's own library room so the living room with it's spacious sectional couch is a separate space

as well as a light-filled dining room nook. One bedroom has botanicals, the other Chinese art and furniture so the

house has taste and character.

Owner's Response: What a lovely, kind review. I think I will ask our guests to write the copy for our rental information. And they are lovely people, very considerate, left the house spotless, and left us some delicious cookies. Many thanks, Marilyn and Carlos

Relaxing weekend with wonderful hosts

  • 5 of 5

The house was the perfect size for two couples + a baby, and so convenient for walking up to town, to the Firemans park, to Russ park, etc. Despite rainy weather, we had a fantastic time in the house playing games and preparing meals. Carlos and Marilyn are such gracious hosts, we will definitely be back!

Fabulous stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous stay at Francis St Vacation home. It really felt like we were coming home each time we left for a day of adventures. Comfortable, cozy and private. The neighbors, Carlos and Marilyn were wonderful to meet and share conversations with. Of course the surrounding area is great fun to explore and wonder in the beauty of the environment. I will certainly hope to plan a return trip. It was great to be able to bring the dog too. Thanks to Marilyn and Carlos for sharing their slice of paradise.

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to have them stay. They were perfect guests, and I am glad they found our little piece of paradise. It's easy to stay in and enjoy the house, or get out and explore the town and surrounding land when the mood strikes.

We absolutely loved our 7 night stay. It was by far the best place we ever stayed. It felt just like home the minute you walked through the door. Everything about it was perfect! The yard was wonderful, the kitchen had everything that you would ever need. Oh, and those lovely heated floors! Location could not be better, set back off the road, yet 1 block from main street and downtown. We truly had the best time. The owners of the property, Marilyn and Carlos are both so lovely and welcoming. We couldn't have enjoyed out time more. Tina and Bill

Great location!

  • 4 of 5

Our stay started out a bit awkward as we were approached by the owner when we arrived. We had driven 7 hours and arrived after 11pm. I had assumed that it was okay to bring our dogs, and didn't know it needed to be cleared with the owner. This was all worked out and we payed the extra fee for our pets. Overall, the house was amazing, and the owners were very welcoming. Carlos came over one evening while we had a fire going in the outdoor fire pit, and we enjoyed good wine and conversation. We will definitely be back, and would most definitely, and highly, recommend this beautiful home. Ferndale remains one of my most favorite places, and this was our first time staying in this adorable little town.

Owner's Response: I am glad Erin and her group enjoyed their mini-reunion, and I certainly hope we see them again. Ferndale and our vacation home are a great place to get away from everyday hectic life. I am glad the puppy confusion was cleared up for everyone.

Francis St. Home is very private, but the historic town of Ferndale is a block away. It is one of the few intact victorian towns in California, so you can stroll through town and enjoy the history and architecture, or easily drive to the ocean and redwoods.
